Bad Localizations/Translations Anonymous 01/20/2023 (Fri) 23:30:26 No. 2195
Thread for talking about, laughing at, or cringing at absolutely dogshit translation jobs by diversity hires and (((other people))). Pic related is from the recent anime Inukai where the protagonist turned into a dog and everything is from his perspective. This is the "official" Funimation translation btw.
character says ้Šƒ which is just what you call a modern gun
>>51199 >bolt-action >musket
>>51194 Depends. If it's just ใฆใ‚ alone then yeah, "why, you..." be a good translation too. But when it is used in a longer sentence as the second person pronoun of choice, you have to include the latent disrespect that it implies. Depending on the specific context something like "you bastard" can also work, I think.
>>2195 Still less bad than old fan subs
>>3713 How do I get non-troonslated subs, is there a site for it? Are the translations on Nyaa safe? I primarily download from SubsPlease and EMBER
>>52422 What was wrong with those?
>>4550 I generally agree with what he said. Of course different languages full of words with different sounds and connotations will make different arrangements of words and concepts literarily 'optimal'. If you took a great english author and taught him everything about a foreign masterpiece, he could probably cobble together a better english language novel than the direct translation. He could do so even while attempting to carry over as much of the story and themes as possible. Hacks with no literary talent and no concern for anything besides their ideology echoing an argument doesn't necessarily make it wrong. The problem isn't that it's impossible to improve a work, especially one written in a different language and translated literally. Modern translators just have neither the ability or desire to do so.
>>52422 >actually added relevant and interesting tl notes I miss them.
(87.09 KB 482x364 ux.jpg)

>>52422 Behold- with a mere 2 second note the humor has been explained, the meaning conveyed, the manner of speech learned, and all necessity of localization thrown out. And they did it for free.
So what are the most reliable ways to avoid this kind of "undesirable" situations?
>>2195 >the translation is not for you This person should never be allowed to be a translator ever again.
>>2197 Does she? I haven't heard anything about her in a long time.
>>2195 >the translation is not for you What a fag.
>>54857 NTA but last I heard she had left SEGA (who she was working for at the time). Not sure what she is up to now.
>>2195 These are the types of people who bitch about AI taking their jobs btw. I don't like AI but if it puts this cunt in the street then I'll support it just this once.
>>54611 >most reliable learn Japanese >second most reliable keep an ear out to which series people complain about, and read/watch the fan TL instead in those cases
>>2195 >>54743 >it's not for you, it's for less informed wider audience who still believes in my good faith! there's a level of narcissism that can only be unlocked by troons it seems. <i didn't even noticed how old this thread is before looking at quote links, this board is hilarious >>38694 >This seems to be an almost uniquely anglo problem. not really. I sometimes check Russian subtitles and it's mostly worse despite the opportunity to translate certain things closer than with English ะžั‚ัะตะฑัั‚ะธะฝะฐ (roughly, taking unwarranted liberties) is an omnipresent problem. Minimizing translation loss is challenging work, why would you bother if you're lazy/arrogant/incompetent?
>>4550 <night begins to come <and the darkness falls at once <in the groves of the plum There's nothing at all wrong with this poem yet the localiser say's it's obviously a disaster
>>4550 >So it turns out that translators have been raping our asshole for the past century, we just didn't know about it until they came for the anime titties and the manga lolis! I don't want to go /pol/, but as it's been going on for a lot longer than a century, to a lot more languages than Japanese, and has real world consequences ebyond anime titties because false translations have been used to rile people up against certain countries leading to sanctions and wars and crap.
People who still don't know Japanese deserve all the worst translations. No respect for people who consume and therefore fund and support this kuso.
>>54552 The issue with this in a commercial setting is that this isn't actual translation. Liner notes such as this tend to be used in an academic setting because they are necessary for consuming the work. That's why translations of significant works like The Inferno or Faust will have extensive notes on the translation, while lesser works like The Witcher or basically any light novel will not. >but why don't they include TL notes? Because the primary audience watching and/or purchasing this content do not necessarily care for extensive notes and would prefer to just have something easily digestible. The few anime that are the exception to this rule also have far superior notes than what fansubs would ever offer, because they aren't just espousing the most basic Japanese knowledge possible. For example, the Nozomi Ent. release of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is made with a similar expectation to academic works as mentioned before.
the new gundam has some particularly retarded decisions in the english sub
>>63505 Most sub decisions for current Gundam seem to come from Sunrise themselves for some reason. They were behind the really bad subs for SEED FREEDOM where Durandal was called "Dullandal", it's really fucking dumb. What's been going on with Gquuuux though?
>>2277 >"It's not misgendering if WE do it!" The only political alignment I hate more than conversative is progressive, and I really hate conservatives.
>>2278 A little late to the deb8, but sus was normalfag slang for ages before amogus. It's totally in character for a riajuu like niggatoro to say it. Of course, the localizers don't know that. They absolutely added it for le meemz.
i should really learn japanese but id have no use for it besides understanding everything in shitty anime like kill la kill, i wish i had more of a reason to itll always make me sad that so much is lost in translating stuff i like
>>64527 Sounds like a good enough reason to me.
>>64527 I never regretted learning it for hentai.
>>64527 There are one thousand untranslated episodes of Shin-chan awaiting you.
>>63361 This has always been asinine kike logic. Any normalnigger like you describe is just going to stick to anime, most of them can't even get the attention span to read manga anymore. People reading the LNs actually give a fuck to that degree, which is why the LN okamalation industry is rapidly shrinking to the point it's just a horse corpse kadokawa had to buy now, there's no real overlap between people willing to read LNs and also enjoy okamalated axe wounded garbage.
>>64527 Tbh its worth it to start. I've been starting my reps to get around localizers and read doujin that haven't been translated. Boner power really works, I can read basic hiragana and it hasn't been a week.
>>63361 >Pic Are you trolling or legitimately so down syndrome that you think this is good
TOTAL LOCALIZER DEATH >>50829 sauce?
Never forget the travesty that is; "Bitches, bros and nonbinary hoes." The original line in Japanese was; "To all you fools who love skateboarding..."
>>43865 >>2197 Aka everything since 2008 has been fake and gay since these people don't have to worry about losing money, so they just hire their idiot friends instead of someone with half a brain.
