>>70482 I would prefer he act like he did in Z.
>>70482 There's a middle ground. Current Goku is definitely flanderized to the extreme. He doesn't have to be a super serious guy but he shouldn't be a mega retard either. Toei just don't know how to write happy go lucky characters without turning them into childish idiots, one piece filler had the same problem too >>70485 There is. Jump is for kids after all and its easier for them to self insert and imagine themself in the world if mc is just as simple as them. There's a reason why people don't like characters like Shinji for example who aren't just vessels for the viewer to insert themselves into the story and act as actual characters with likes and dislikes or prefrences
>>73434 People don't like Shinji because like every other "complex" character, he just ends up being a loser who submits to evil and destroys the world because he can't see past himself. The entire reason people hate him is because the motherfucker cannot stop sucking his own dick and feeling sorry for himself even when the literal world is at risk. Is that realistic? Of course, but it isn't the trait a main character of a story should have. At the end of the day this is all for entertainment, and if we want realism we can just walk outside.
>>73435 >Of course, but it isn't the trait a main character of a story should have. I disagree. There are different types of stories and not all of them should be written with the same type of mc. Eva would be a less interesting story and and overarching themes of eva and how it presents them would have far less impact if Shinji was the type of protagonist who got his shit together because its his job. Also the idea that Shinji constantly feels sorry for himself and has no agency is false and something that keeps getting repeated from people who either haven't watched the show in a while, didn't pay attention or learnt about it through osmosis and clips. There's plenty of moments where shinji steps up and accepts his responsibility or swallows his pride to get the job done and the only time he doesn't is at the beginning where's he's being asked to do an unreasonable job by people he doesn't know and at the end where he's essentially mindbroken and alone and even then he still tried to do his job. The idea that MCs should all be written with the genki mentality of I'm gonna do this because that threat or thing popped up even though I have no obligations to just feeds further into the whole living through the mc thing
>>73442 No matter what the is about, if you have an ineffective child who cries like a bitch constantly about a hand in life that wasn't that bad it will become a bad one. Just look at Boruto, and MHA, it's same thing. There is a very simple reason why every time a character like this shows up they get shat on. And I completely disagree, as someone who has watched the show, this is a bluff that fans have retroactively committed to because they know no one is going to rewatch that worthless sack of shit to prove them wrong. Shinji is constantly regressing in character, one moment he will be convinced on actually doing his job, then in the next two episodes he will magically forget everything he's learned and return to being a self absorbed to the point of suicide. His entire problem comes from the fact that as a character he cannot decide what he wants for himself, does not even know what he wants for himself, and will at any moment use the fact that the writers have set him up as pathetic to regress on already decided character growth. He is the epitome of have your cake and eat it. On the one hand he doesn't want to do his job, but unlike any character who would actually have this trait, he does nothing to get himself away from that position, or even show he has the will to be capable of it. At the beginning of the series there is literally nothing compelling him to do his job except his own passivity and lack of a spine. Even if he didn't get in the fucking robot, he would have been more respectable, because he could handle not halfassing his convictions or his fears. No one could force him to do it, and if he fucked off immediately after being put in it, damn the consequences, he would make more sense, and be more understandable. Instead there are numerous times where like a suicidal lemming he just stays in place, unwilling to move forward or retreat. At the end he barely tries to do his job after devastatingly failing after once again abandoning it. He is an inconsistent mess that drives no plot points, but reacts to everything around him in a menheraphrenic and scattered manner as long as it falls into the category of "pathetic". He is not a hero that is reluctant but ultimately forced to act, and he is not a character with any real agency despite what you say. Like I said, nothing is ever compelling him besides the words of others, yet despite this he constantly submits to them. If he had any actual agency he would be making decisions on his own even in ignorance, or trying to leave his ignorance instead of constantly having to be convinced to act, then failing at even staying consistent on that end, or his own cowardice. For any story this is a death sentence, and it's also why Evangelion has never succeeded with a universally beloved adaptation or outing in the franchise. They all have devastating flaws and shallow themes that tie themselves to the ones in more complex stories to pass off as competent. Without a proper main character who has any modicum of ambition or core, it will always fall apart.
>>73443 >one moment he will be convinced on actually doing his job, then in the next two episodes he will magically forget everything he's learned and return to being a self absorbed Whoa, it's almost like people do that in real life too!
>>73445 Did you miss my original post about realism? Something being done by people in real life doesn't mean that it escapes the trait of bad writing, especially when the character in question is missing the traits that lead to this happening. Not to mention that no one in real life is going to be convinced that they and the world will 100% be fucking slaughtered by aliens if they don't fight, fight, and then bitch out the next time it happens as if they don't even remember the last time. Real human beings will only be this wishy washy on something that 1. Isn't that important, 2. They are convinced isn't that important, or 3. When they are mentally ill, or receive new information that recontextualizes what they used as their original motivation to go through with something. Shinji is constantly acknowledging that it is that important, then needing the exact same arguments to get him back into gear. It is not only bad writing, it's also not realistic. Realism for shinji being a menhera tard is just an excuse the braindead fans use to avoid coming to terms with the fact that he is written poorly. To use a food analogy, since it's the on the level of mentality you'd need to defend evakuso, it's like going to a regular restaurant, ordering a burger, getting a half eaten apple, then when you complain that 1. That isn't a burger, and 2. That it's a shitty burger, some idiot with a score of half eaten apples on his plate comes over to say "well but it's realistic, most people eat things just as bad as this around the world!". It's pathetic, and a last ditch justification for bad writing, realism is not a value unless it is to balance how consistent a story is with it's entertainment value. Copying real life is just plagiarizing except there's no one to hold you accountable, it's utterly meaningless.

>>73443 Deku and Boruto suck because they are poorly written characters in poorly written shallow stories that don't benefit from having those type of characters. That doesn't mean those type of MCs are bad but that it goes back to my point about it depending on the type of story it is and what narrative and themes the story aims to tell. Using shonen MCs as examples as to why its bad doesn't work because shonen stories typically don't have the framework to make them work so they feel out of place. There's a reason Goku's a perpetual retard even to his own detriment. >, he does nothing to get himself away from that position, He does multiple times. He always ends up going back because at the end of the day he cares about the shitty people in his life even though they keep hurting him. The only reason he doesn't leave and gets in the robot is because he doesn't want to see an injured Rei fight in his place not because he lacked the will to stand up for himself and not pilot the robot

>>73446 If you go to a restaurant that advertises itself as a realistic to Africa experience then I'd expect to get exactly what you described.
>>73448 >He always ends up going back because at the end of the day he cares about the shitty people in his life even though they keep hurting him. That's called "battered housewife syndrome", where you constantly make excuses for why you continue to hang around people who give you nothing but shit. My dad didn't want my family to grow up in that kind of environment, and that's why he moved over 1000 miles away. It's not because you "don't care", it's because those people do nothing except destroy your life.
>>73450 But I didn't, I went to one that described itself as a burger joint, and it's instead feeding me the shit I'd find in an Indonesian slum.
>>73448 And Shinji sucks because he is a poorly written character in a poorly written show. He doesn't share just one trait then none of the others, he is the past version of this exact same problem. No story can make a pile of shit good, and no story is served better by a main character like this. All it ever leads up to is an author using their work to work out their psychological issues. >He does multiple times No he doesn't that's my point, all his attempts are worthless, and not in the vein of someone genuinely running from something. How could he possibly care about Gendo? He barely knows the man and holds what is basically contempt for him, how could he care about Rei? He knew her for less than 5 seconds when he first got into that cockpit. How could he care about Misato? All the way until the end of the series he has barely even known her for 6 months. Shinji is Schrodinger's coward, he doesn't want to involve himself until he sees something that would be negligible to someone with that actual character trait, at which point he risks life and limb for people he's never met before, and could not possibly care about that deeply. He absolutely lacked the will, his father wheeled out a half dead little girl he never met, and his first instinct is to instantly fold despite the fear for his life, confusion, and any instinct telling him not to jump into something while completely ignorant of the situation. This is what I mean by him not being realistic, and how that's just a thin excuse used by fans to justify being fed dogshit under the banner of realism. If he was really how he was portrayed he would have happily let her be pushed to her death, then regret it later, and have that be his motivation to improve as a person if he didn't like that feeling. Her continued existence afterwards would be a mystery that haunts the narrative, that would actually be good writing. What we see is a scattered mess of the authors own psychological shortcomings being vomited onto the screen, alongside his own homosexual pining that he never got over, and some giant robots.
>>73454 >how could he care about Rei? He knew her for less than 5 seconds when he first got into that cockpit. How could he care about Misato? All the way until the end of the series he has barely even known her for 6 months. What? If you see an injured person being forced into battle would you not care for their well being? Do you not have the ability to sympathize for your fellow man. Would you not start to care about someone who is essentially your mother figure after having them care for you everyday for 6 months as one? >>73452 Yeah but the people your dad moved away from aren't at risk of dying because you moved away. If you knew leaving them increases the odds of them dying would you not hesitate or doubt your choice
>>73455 Shinji is a cowardly child thrown into a situation he doesn't understand. 99% of children, in that situation, if there is someone they do not know about to be thrown to their death, will not risk their life for someone they do not know. That is realistic, which is something you were glazing not six posts ago. I certainly have the ability to sympathize with my fellow man, and I might even risk my life in their place, but for someone characterized like Shinji is, his fellow men would have to die with his sympathies. And again, he is a child of neglect who does not know that woman from a can of paint. He would not develop the idea that she is his mother figure when she can't even take care of herself let alone him, and put herself towards him in a sexual manner. Shinji is not me, he is an inconsistent coward, who like I said before, will switch characterization as long as it fits under the umbrella of "pathetic". He is totally fine leaving his fellow man to be brutally murdered by angels instead of acting, he should be totally fine letting Rei die in his place.
>>73455 >If you see an injured person being forced into battle would you not care for their well being? Not really, no. We see that all the time with news coverage of wars. Yes, it's a tragedy to see all that shit happening to people, but there is nothing I can do about it. >Yeah but the people your dad moved away from aren't at risk of dying because you moved away You don't know that. My father moving away could have caused one of my cousins to mentally snap, and spiral down a series of events that would eventually result in him committing suicide. I've heard some other acquaintances where the exact opposite occurred, where they did everything they possibly could to connect and be with family members, having a presence and being supportive, and that still happened regardless. >If you knew leaving them Well like the other Anon said, you DON'T know until it happens. They make a choice, an event happens, and now they have to deal with the consequences of that event (Good or bad). You cannot live you life on "What ifs". Is there actually an instance where Shinji told his dad to go pound salt, and then we see people dying or getting seriously injured as a result of that?
>>73457 >We see that all the time with news coverage of wars. Yes, it's a tragedy to see all that shit happening to people, but there is nothing I can do about it. Yes, but Shinji's situation isn't seeing it on the news its right there in front of him and there is literally something he can do about it. >Is there actually an instance where Shinji told his dad to go pound salt, and then we see people dying or getting seriously injured as a result of that? Yes. There are moments in the original series where Shinji decides not pilot and it fucks over Rei and Asuka and seriously injures them. Like the episode after he fights bardiel and threatens to destroy nerv before leaving and ultimately having to come back to prevent the people he cares about as well as tokyo 3 from dying
>>73479 >Yes, but Shinji's situation isn't seeing it on the news its right there in front of him and there is literally something he can do about it. No, there isn't. He's climbing into the cockpit of a battlemech that he doesn't know how to pilot, surrounded by people he doesn't know, in order to fight an enemy he doesn't understand. On top of that, he's pulled out of his old life to do this, meanwhile the rest of his team has been training for years. Why does the story specifically need to revolve around Shinji when there's every reason in the book why he shouldn't be there? And he's constantly trying to run away from there. >Like the episode after he fights bardiel and threatens to destroy nerv before leaving and ultimately having to come back to prevent the people he cares about as well as tokyo 3 from dying Do they actually die or is it another "possibility"? Even then, who is it that he cares about? The people he's known for five minutes, and every second of those five minutes just being one event after another showing that he's going to be treated like shit if he hangs around a second longer? Again, why do we specifically need Shinji to be there? The Eva is a military weapon. Unless everyone is taking stupid pills, there should be several Eva teams training with these machines instead of relying upon a kid who cries every 10 seconds. And if the "reason" is because his dad demands that Shinji absolutely "must" become a pilot against any and all reason, why hasn't the guy been sacked and replaced by someone else?
>>73483 >Do they actually die or is it another "possibility"? If he doesn't go back they do the whole planet does >Even then, who is it that he cares about?' Rei, Asuka Misato, Kaji, his friends from school. Even if he doesn't have the best relationship with them its a fact that he cares about them and that they care about him in their own weird ways and only a unsympathetic asshole would willingly stand by and watch people he cares about die when he has the capability do something about it because they hurt his feelings a few times >The Eva is a military weapon. Pay attention man Shinji and Rei are the only ones that can pilot 01 it will literally not move for anyone else. There's a reason why they have children piloting these stuff and its because they literally are the only ones that can by nature of how the evas work and are made. And there's a reason there is an entire sub plot point of Shinji's school being a breeding ground for potential pilots. You can't just pluck anyone out and put them into an eva they have to be compatible with it
>>73488 >If he doesn't go back they do the whole planet does Where's the military in all of this? Why aren't they getting involved? >Rei, Asuka Misato, Kaji, his friends from school All the people that were giving him nothing but shit? >only a unsympathetic asshole would willingly stand by and watch people he cares WHY does he care about them? He's known them for five minutes and they've given him nothing but shit. There would be nothing wrong with, and be completely reasonable for, someone in that instance saying "Fuck the world, let it burn". >Pay attention man I haven't seen the series, I'm just going off of what I've heard and what you're saying. >Shinji and Rei are the only ones that can pilot 01 it will literally not move for anyone else What about all the other Evas? In fact, if the Eva doesn't fucking work, then the next logical thing would be to scrap it and build a new one that does. >There's a reason why they have children piloting these stuff Because it's a shounen series? >and its because they literally are the only ones that can by nature of how the evas work and are made Sounds like a design flaw that no reasonable person would overlook. The Evas are suppose to be weapons. A weapon is useless unless people can use it. The only exception you can really point to is if the weapon is made FOR someone specifically, but you then shitcan that being the reason with the statement: >there is an entire sub plot point of Shinji's school being a breeding ground for potential pilots. So there is zero reason why the Evas, a man-made weapon, needs to be designed like this except for the purposes of "plot". And there's zero reason why the series needs to focus on Shinji, a kid who wants nothing to do with the world around him, other than said "plot" bending-over backwards because it "wants" Shinji to be the most important person in the universe.
