The way the novel goes is that the OYW is fought only in space so Zeon doesn't spam designs or lose as many MS and the Federation has less combat experience. The Federation takes heavier losses than in the anime during the campaign to A Baoa Qu, then the Solar System effectively wipes out their fleet. Some dumb stuff happens but the remaining Zeon forces at Granada capture Luna II and force the Federation to surrender because Zeon has total orbital dominance (i.e. infinite Operation Britishes) and Luna II is their main manufacturing facility in the novel.

Well we’re in uncharted territory now, I’m really not sure how exactly this all will escalate, I feel like they can’t stay hidden from Zeon for long even if this is their home colony.
