Historical Manga Anonymous 04/16/2025 (Wed) 06:52:30 No. 5389
Post your favorite historical manga, /a/nons? Why are the Japanese somehow able to make series about obscure history so much?
>>5389 Are you that madlad anon who translated the whole otome sensou and even the sequel? I finished the first one because it has cute lolis but the lack of lolis and other controversies in sequel make it a worse read.
>>5441 What other controversies are you referring to anon? That sequel lacks the darkness of both the main story and the prequel manga.
>>5455 Like rape, super orgy between plague patients, etc.
>>5389 because they write a lot but most of those are the same template with a skin.
>>5389 I started reading "Arte" and was enjoying it. It's maybe a little bit dry, but someone with more patience would get a kick out of it.
>>5457 The sequel has attemptes rape and ss though.
>>5464 Not enough lolis, is what I'm saying. The main heroine being hag turns me off.
I like Orb.

>>5389 Generic answer but probably Golden Kamuy. But I read and enjoy almost every historical series unless it's otome/shoujo. Wish I could pic related but they're not translated and my Japanese isn't good enough to stick to the raws.

>>5389 Hyouge Mono. >>6565 I like them because they're (partly) educational and because you get "extra" canon for the characters. If you want more of them you can just read a history book. Though I think this is probably more important if you're a drawfag like me that enjoys expanding the lore through fanworks. Another upside is that history content is usually men-only content or mostly dudes and adult dudes are my favorite type of characters and wars, post-war settings and conquests and culture faggotry my favorite topics which you will also get. Plus, great settings that the mangaka doesn't have to think up since they actually existed. Last but not least: history fags are necessarily book readers as long as the historical story isn't just comedy or romance where historical accuracy doesn't matter, so you have a high chance to get a mangaka who isn't an uneducated retard.
>>5389 You just posted it, though I'm massively biaised because Sarka is so cute.
>>5389 My favorite historical manga is Touge Oni.
>>16575 Not you again.

Ad Astra: Scipio and Hannibal is a pretty good adaptation of the second Punic War. Lots of historical details and bloody depictions of large ancient battles. Quiet a few comedic moments too. My biggest issue with it is where it ends, shortly after the battle of Zama. Which is a natural conclusion to the story as the war ended with it, but it wasn't Hannibal's final battle against Rome, which they show but in only a chapter. Because of this, Scipio's younger brother Lucius doesn't show up despite serving with him in Spain and also getting to be named after a continent, Asiaticus, after the battle of Magnesia. It's 81 chapters in 13 volumes, so fairly long, but worth it.
I can't say favourite, but Vagabond is pretty good. I'm also right now following Ryuu: Ron, but the translation is slow, Red is another one with a historical setting that sticks in my memory.
>>23858 >>23949 Fantastic taste. RED and Vagabond are some of my all time favorite manga and Ad Astra is very good as well. What I currently enjoy is Plinivs. Should absolutely give this a chance if anybody here likes Romans. I also enjoy Elusive Samurai though it's kinda dorky and a shounen. But I am mostly in for the funny, creative interpretations of the historical side characters and I want to see how it handles the Kanno Disturbance. Have never heard of Ryuu:Ron before but put it into my to-read list. Also, obligatory 4chan chart posting. By nowhere complete but it's a start and lists a bunch of historical manga that anons might have overlooked so far. Maybe we should update this or make a new one that includes all the missing series like Waga Na wa Nero. And in case that someone isn't aware of it yet: Science SARU is adapting Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia. A manga about Fatima of Tus and the Mongol Empire.
Alexandros: Dream for World Conquest. I don't remember much about it, but it's a retelling of Alexander's life. Alexander is depicted as looking young, which I find neat. One shot with 240 pages. I haven't read Historie, so I don't know how they compare.
>>27719 Alexandros isn't very good. It tries to cover all of Alexander's life in a single volume, which results in a lot of descriptions of events with a few scenes inbetween to remind you you're reading a manga. There's no huge overlap with Historie since it entered its hiatus right after Alexander's dad died, and the focus isn't on Alexander for most of the story. His other work on Nero is sligthly better since 2 volumes gives more room to breathe. I haven't read the one on Jesus yet.
>>5389 Anything with rape. Otome Sensou was great.
>>30919 I'd agree with your criticisms of it. If you already know the story of Alexander, it's cool to see it in a manga. It's like the Oliver Stone film in a lot of ways, only somehow less gay.
i have nothing to add but thank you for this thread. i have never heard of historical manga besides kingdom which i thought was an outlier until now
Anybody here read Zipang? Why is such a good manga still not release in English?

Plinivs is great, even if you aren't particularly interested in Pliny the Elder (albeit he was an interesting dude if you ask me). Manga is basically a biography of him. >>57920 I wish I could. Read all of it, that is. The anime was good too, it's a shame that the manga never got a full TL. I also want Konpeki no Kantai (Blue Fleet) albeit this is rather alt-history with occult shit and not-Hitler. Still interesting though.
