Saturday-morning cartoons Anonymous 10/05/2024 (Sat) 10:21:10 No. 463637
Do any of you still watch them?
if you don't watch cartoons you're just a bitter faggot, just enjoy the fun things
>>463639 He specifically says Saturday morning cartoons though. It's been so long, I can't remember what was morning cartoons and what were evening cartoons. I just know morning cartoons tended to be comedic and for younger audiences. The only thing I might go watch that fits that off the top of my head might be Animaniacs? I've been watching a lot of capeshit lately, but that has a lot of violence and deals with death pretty often, so I don't think it played in the morning.
This Oldfag remembers when Saturday morning cartoons were a hallowed institution, before anything internet and when cable and/or satellite were still niche markets. Filmation cartoons and live-action filled CBS, with Looney Tunes still checking in. H/B was all up on NBC, while Sid & Marty Croft filled ABC. Then we all grew up and you have Animaniacs parodying Filmation' VERY limited Limited Animation style and Seinfeld singing and dancing the intro to the Bugs Bunny-Roadrunner Show. And unfortunate insults towards titles like Land of the Lost and Electra Woman & Dyna Girl. In the 70s, schools gave both Easter and Thanksgiving four-day weekends, and the networks would broadcast two hours of Saturday morning fare on both weekday mornings. Then in the 80s you have upstarts Ruby/Spears (who got started writing 'Scooby Doo, Where Are You?') up on ABC cranking out Alvin & the Chipmunks, Richie Rich, and Thundarr the Barbarian, with production design by Jack Kirby. From 5:30 AM to around 10:30 it was cartoons, and then pro wrestling, and then the weekend sports stuff after 12:00. I can still remember coming down off that Saturyday morning high when all the boring adult stuff came on.
The networks would also run ads in your favorite comic books -- either full-page or two-page spreads at the staple-- to advertise the new season's cartoon lineup.
>>463647 That's awesome. I remember watching flintstones on channels like cartoon network in the 90s, but Saturday cartoons for me were Pokemon, TMNT, Biker Mice From Mars, Street Sharks, Road Rovers, and that weird Jumanji animated show. If I was lucky I caught some x-men or the Hulk cartoon.
>>463649 When did Saturday Morning die out as cartoon paradise anyways? During the 80s our local independent broadcast station ran two hours of after school cartoons during the week, which is when we got Voltron, Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats, Robotech, Duck Tales and Galaxy Rangers. That was also the channel that got the Disney Afternoon and Tiny Toon Adventures, but all on the weekdays.

>>463637 I remember Fox Kids, the only good thing about that station, and then when it became FoxBox. After that basically just Cartoon Network & Nickelodeon. I remember Street Sharks, Extreme Dinosaurs, Pokemon, and Digimon. Oh and Sonic X. Thanks to TPB, I can relive those days, and so can you!
My kids grew up never knowing the raw burning ache of being a 9 year old who had to wait all week to see cartoons on Saturday only to have their dad kick them off the only television in the house so he could watch sports. Nor did they ever know what it was like to live pre-VCR and have to weigh the relative merits between two cartoons on competing channels. I fear this may have spoiled them in some fundamental way.

>>463637 >>463650 Saturday morning cartoons haven't existed in just over a decade. The CW was the last network to actually air them, and that hardly even counts as a real network. The last Saturday morning cartoon ever aired was Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal, episode 89, "Darkness Dawns," on September 27, 2014. The rise of dedicated kids' channels in the '90s made Saturday morning cartoons redundant.
>>463727 Cool but sad trivia! There's a lot of retro programming channels on the digital broadcast spectrum nowadays, since VHF/UHF is all allotted to every form of cell-phone imagined. I wonder of any of those go in for retro cartoon blocks ..?
