your Luke verse is about renunciantion; he's giving an example of letting go of attachments to FLEETING ("worldly") things. when you let go of these attachments to unstable, transient things, you find the supremely stable Ground (or Rock, as in Matthew 7) upon which to build. if you fail to understand it in this way, the other words of Jesus won't make sense; they will seem contradictory when they are instead complementary.
Matthew 5:38-40 (Luke 6:29–31) NIV
38“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
39But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
Matthew 5:43-45 (Luke 6:27, 28, 32–36 ) NIV
43“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil AND the good, and sends rain on the righteous AND the unrighteous.
do not misunderstand; Jesus doesn't mean to harbor hate in your heart for others. he means to cease to cling to extraneous, conditioned things. he is using "hating" family as his example because we mostly consider family and our closest friends to be the most stable thing in life. Jesus is saying that is still not the True GROUND; you have to find that which is truly unassailable, incorruptible, indestructible—that is to be your Ground, your Foundation, your Rock. we find this Ground by SUBTRACTING everything which is "in the way."
