/hyw/ + /wct/ - How's Your Webcomic + Web Comics Thread Anonymous 04/19/2025 (Sat) 23:52:25 No. 46668
Double whammy, are you working on a webcomic? Post your work, talk about it, connect with anons. Do you wanna discuss the medium as a whole or talk about any specific web comics? Let's all do it here.
>>46668 Full disclosure: I am an outsider of the old /hyw/ and whatever drama killed it, I just want webcomics to thrive in these small spaces, they're the last stand of true creativity in this corporate hellscape. the last true punk rock of the internet.
>>46668 Tapas, and Webtoons sucks and are just a dumping ground of manga-like romance. Hive Works has some decently fun webcomics. My personal favorites are in general are: >Erfworld https://archives.erfworld.com/ >Rice Boy: Vattu: https://rice-boy.com/vattu/ Those two still really stick with me for some reason. And I miss the fact that many webcomics now are centralized on hosting platforms rather than the old school way of making and hosting your own website. >>46673 Old /hyw/ was a cesspit anyways, I lurked there, and it was always some drama. I popped in once in a while, but it was always some kind of in thread drama or Discord drama.

I recently finished my webcomic Golem Requiem on Webtoon and Tapas and started uploading it to Pixiv and the difference in views on Pixiv is very noticeable https://www.pixiv.net/user/103630759/series/269953
>>47386 Going for that early Pokémon style huh?
(57.64 KB 300x300 GRTapa51.png)

>>47407 >Going for that early Pokémon style huh yes,i love the pokemon old style
>>47386 Are you literally twelve
>>46673 Agreed. Let's keep that nonsense out of here. I miss these threads so much. I hope to resume my comic someday soon. >>47419 What's not to love? Hell of a style. >>48287 Anon some people are twelve, it's cool. At least he's a cool 12. Then he'll grow into a cool adult.
>>48287 Honestly with AI art (I'm not trying to start a rage war about AI art) but because overpolished works are so common now, style and lack of skill is kind of fun and refreshing. I like to see people trying and going in their own direction. Not every webcomic needs to be god-tier or amazing. It's what makes webcomics enjoyable, it's a giant mixed bag and seeing people go off into their own directions without caring too much about the audience or general appeal is refreshing as well.
>>48295 Yeah, webcomics are supposed to be a kinda rough thing that you muddle through they're star trek, not star wars. you make an episode, you move on, you hope you kept continuity but you probably made a bunch of mistakes and had a low budget. Though the overpolished stuff was already pretty common, hence that being what they chose to train stuff on.
>>48302 Exactly. Webcomics are on the rougher side. Look at the beginning of works like Two Kinds and Goblins, the art is pretty rough versus the newest stuff. It's kind of a meta-journey with the artist since it's so long form of a work. You watch the artist grow, their talents and skills, and so too the story. You literally watch both the artist and the story progress as you read and there is something wholesome about that. >Though the overpolished stuff was already pretty common, hence that being what they chose to train stuff on. Yes. I don't mean to talk about AI art or make it a thing. But in the artistic creator realm, this is actually a good thing. Style and going off in your own direction is the new direction of art. The question comes into why overly polish your art when AI can do it. So just lean into your own personalized style and direction instead.
>>48303 my hope, if the mob doesn't destroy it (and they will) is that AI shit is used for the monkeywork. like I already did the lines in pencil, just make them real ink now and let me clean it up a little. Or if I already did solid ink lines, maybe change them to anti-aliased so they look better in this here scenario. or if I draw a dude reaching up to punch, and then one drawing of the punch, could you just fill in the blanks so I get a good animation? That kinda shit.
>>48304 I agree. I think AI will be big in 2D animation hopefully. Notably filling in the "inbetweens" since that is so time consuming. I think also AI could help with streamlining the artistic process when used sparingly. If you have the sketch layer and the AI does the inking or auto-correcting mistakes in the line work. Then, maybe adding values to a flat colored piece or something, you the artist adding the flat colors. or auto-correcting and polishing your work further. It's hard enough to find colorists to collab with and then you have to pay them and then with potentially royalties. Hell, a lot of webcomics are straight up one person studios having to write, draw, and color their own projects which is time consuming and you probably won't ever see really any monetary return on your works. I think if AI is used strategically it can help.
>>48305 The Undergrads guy has been working on a movie for years since the funding fell through, and he's finding he can train it on his own art and have it do those simple inbetweens.
>>47419 What’s with the tatsumaki hair?
Shall we also discuss great webcomics we have discovered recently? I am enjoying: >Sugar and Spies (aka Underagents) >Misfits of Fortune >Pneuma Vita >Journey Upstream >Wish Fulfillment >Swan Boy >The Acryden >Obituary >Abnormal Shift (if it ever gets started) >Exvulnerum >and Visua Busters (NSFW)
I'm working on my webcomic/webmanga (The format is technically manga since it was created for a manga website, but the comic inspiration is heavy). I'm having problems with the work ethic. I worked on the first year and made 5 issues (3 now, since I merged the first 3 into a big one). Around the release of the fifth one my grandma's health turned for the worse and took all my mind and time. I released the sixth one after her death, working on it intermittently. And even though I don't have to help take care of her anymore, I'm having trouble working on it at a consistent pace.
>>48371 Go nuts, post images, discuss it >>48453 Emotional burn out dayo.
>>48510 >Emotional burn out dayo. Probably, but at the same time, there's nothing I want to do more than to continue on it... until I'm behind the canvas.

>>46668 idk if anyone's seen my work recently, but i've been aimin' for a looser, more angular direction with my drawings ...how am i doin'?
>>46668 i posted my stuff on a thread on /loomis/ but right now im starting to get back in the groove of things. at the same time im working on another project with a buddy of mine.
>>48303 >why overly polish your art when AI can do it. Some people actually have fun making comics that look good
>>48531 Very cartoony in a good way. Reminds me of 2004. In a good way.
>>48548 Yeah that's what I like about it too >>48534 Nice! this also has that 2000s feel >>48546 unpolished can look good. usually does. I only follow like four super polished webcomics, and only one gets more than like 6 updates in a year.
>>48552 thank you! thats exactly what i was going for artstyle wise so im glad i got that down. hopefully ill be able to get some pages done before the end of april but at the same time im not too sure since im just one guy here haha.
>>48561 Your art makes me think me of what would've been in Andrew Dickman hadn't turn into a cookie cutter generic artist to appeal to networks (and fail at it).
>>48570 it's always sad when people mass-appealiate their art style.. But the saddest to me is when you get somebody drawing animu, and he clearly has some room to grow, and he does and improves a lot on perspective or whatever, but then he thinks he needs to un-anime his style, and that the way to do that.. is to keep everything the same, but make eyes smaller and smaller, and noses bigger and bigger. even as they are still practically copypasted from pokemon.
>>48570 ive learned pretty early on to not be an asskisser to a point where you sabotage your artstyle or anything to yourself for that matter, so you dont gotta worry about that for me. >>48573 yeah its pretty fucked up, its like that tumblr artist who went to art school but came back with thier artstyle lookin oddly fetish-y for lack of a better word, or for an even worse scenario, that puppychan fella on twitter
>>48573 >but then he thinks he needs to un-anime his style I've seen this happen way too many times and then it becoming generic garbage that's neither appealing as cartooning nor as an animu attempt. I fucking hate it. Stupid example but I think Dobson's art was better when he kept the Rumiko Takahashi elements in his art.
>>48580 At least when it goes tumblr style, I get it. you went to art school. you tried to learn 60s-90s disney style. I'm with you. but taking anime and thinking you can just change the proportions or feature placements and that somehow works better... you don't think japan would have thought of that? it looks picassoriffic. Trust the old guys, without going full uguu at least.
>>48583 If people want to go full uguu, that's people's prejorative, I know the uguu comes from the terrible first adaptation of Clannad (or was it Kanon?) but there's Uguu that works, like Di Gi Charat. Basically, people just need to put effort on the right places and embrace what they love instead of being ashamed of it and trying to distance themselves from it with poor results.
>>48588 yeah see you knew just what I meant. the world needs the wisdom of digicharat today more than ever.
>>48580 quite an odd example given dobsons art hadn't really changed over the years but i do get what you mean since he was a 90s fanboy haha
>>48589 Honestly, I'd love to see more people attempt the old 90s uguu. Incidentally 90s Usada best Usada, changing her colors after the original series was a mistake. >>48602 Dobson's art got definitely uglier after he stopped using anime elements, with horrible over detailing on wrinkles and stuff. It became as ugly as he was inside.
>>48308 Fox In Space guy should take notes.
>>48561 Newgrounds-esque
>>48578 For me it's when an artist was already good then shitted themselves to jump on the calarts cartoon style train
>>48665 haha yeah i tend to get that a lot from my friends when i draw. but yeah a lot of the old internet culture that i grew up with had a lot of influence on not just my art, but with the characters aswell like TV who kinda talks like a 4channer from that era (i.e. newfag, an hero, fake and gay), that whole thing but not to a point where its irritating though.
okay so the auto update thing clearly does not work
>>48311 >What’s with the tatsumaki hair? I wanted the Ika Musume hat, but made of hair.
>>48561 What’s with the vivziepop color patterns, red and black? Also there’s an imp as well!
>>48746 >What’s with the vivziepop color patterns, why red and black? the organization they are under has red/black/dark grey as their motif and i have more characters outside of them in mind so you can tell who's from where ala TF2 to put it simply. also funny you mention vivziepop cuz i saw people dunking on how she used the color patterns in hazbin/helluva and although i did find it funny, i also went outta my way to make the reds more muted to be more easier to look at. >Also there’s an imp as well! Axel actually has been an oc ive had since middle school, pre-dating hazbin/helluva, but when that blew up i went to workshopping axels look to differentiate him better.
>>48762 red and black is just cool >OC since middle school my man
Well? How IS your webcomic?
>>48809 I keep changing how I feel about it, but lately I think it holds up. I'm able to show it to more randos and they seem to appreciate it.
>>48809 I keep changing how I feel about it, but lately I think it holds up. I'm able to show it to more randos and they seem to appreciate it.
I was hoping to read more Neapolitan but I think Covid killed any chance of progress on that. The only things I'm reading that are still active are KipTeiTei's One Serving Choice and TwoKinds.
>>48870 you would think it would have helped comics update more, but no
>>48882 Yeah, you would think. At least with lackadaisy it's got a show in production now. I can at least see why we haven't seen any comic updates since 2020 with that going on.
>>48966 I'm always so happy when comics get a tv show though in the case of Axe Cop, apparently he barely made any money and it was the end of the comic since by the time it was over, the kid wasn't young enough anymore to come up with all that insane stuff for Axe Cop to do. Then he did Bearmageddon and then his neck got injured and now he just does podcasts.

>>48809 It wrapped up four years ago and it's been filler since. https://tapas.io/episode/3417491
>>49007 Wow somehow i never noticed. At what point does the story stop? I don't think I've even been reading your comic for more than 3-ish years, but I did binge the archive.
>>49008 It would be here https://tapas.io/episode/2183475 this ends a certain adventure that began in an older webcomic with the same name. The usual fate, start a comic, get stuck, hiatus.
>>49014 awesome, crossover. but now I want to read that older one.
>>49075 oh hell, this has a fun premise. How's Medibang treating you as a host?
>>49371 I like that they are very liberal. As long as you don't post gore and porn, they'll let you post anything. >How's Medibang treating you as a host? Very hands free.
>>49492 samefagging but let me dwell deeper on that. Medibang is very hands free, unlike Webtoon or Tapas that is handled by Koreans, Medibang is handled by japs and jesus christ is noticeable. The first time I found Manga Creators Plus was back when a friend publishing in webtoon got a chapter of his taken down for having a character saying "whore", then we found Medibang and saw a manga of some chick raw-dogging a literal car. So I knew where to publish. If you read my first chapter's first third you can clearly see that it was made to be vertical, because originally it was made for webtoon. I did publish it vertically in medibang but then it wouldn't allow me to publish chapter 2 horizontally because first chapter determines the orientation of the whole series. So I took the series down, refitted chapter one as horizontally as I could, combined it with chapter 2 and chapter 3 then in production, and released it as a whole 64 pages pack and they just let me do that without issue. But what I like the most about Medibang is the quality. The monthly top 10 is leagues above the Webtoon Originals, the average is above the webtoon average and even the lowest common denominator is above Webtoon's. And I think the page working around constant competition is the cause of that.
>>49492 what else is there to forbid besides gore and porn? what like, no-no words? >hands-free That part is appealing. >>49501 They really do good work. hard-workin bees.
>>49600 >what else is there to forbid besides gore and porn? what like, no-no words? Yes, as said, a friend of mine got his whole latest chapter then taken down by Webtoon and was specifically asked to censor it and change specific dialogue pointed out by moderators in an email, even though he isn't even a really big creator. So he did it in the most annoyingly obvious way. I also got my comic taken down from Medibang, they never told me what the offense was specifically, but was told in an email that it was due to user report (which gave me clues) and since they didn't found any actual rule breaking, they put my comic up again.
>>49666 >language policing and vague, flip-flopping moderation So the bad kind of liberal
>>49668 >So the bad kind of liberal No, the language policing came from webtoon to my friend, not medibang. As for medibang, besides that incident which according to them was caused by user reports they proceeded to publish my comic again, unchanged, and have not had any other issue since. Despite using "fag" more than once >>49075
>>49670 Oh okay. well glad it's working out for you. Any host that isn't tapas or webtoon is good news.
4chins is back up but I'm gonna keep this thread open on account of the /co/ one is kind of terrible.
>>50017 Honestly, I prefer it here, I've come here on and off in the past. 4chan is a filter for normies, bots and shills. It's a slower drip feed here and quite frankly has better thread quality. Already I see the same spam threads and low quality repeat threads on 4chan on /co/ and I'm kinda disgusted by it. 4chan feels like the thread count just zooms by and feels artificial. At least here, during 4chan's down time, it felt like I was chatting and replying to actual anons.
>>50022 you mean 8chan is a filter. ehhh.. not the point really. 4chan is ruined but there's a reason it's the place they went to to ruin. it's like america.
>>50023 I guess you're right, but I think /hyw/ might be better here since it's slower and isn't bumped off constantly as soon as it emerges for some repeat thread by autismo schizos, endless low quality gooner threads or bait reaction threads. I think 4chan is just a cesspit at this point and 8chan felt more like older if it was more chill. It felt better here than 4chan all things considered.
>>50028 agreed. We'll see how things go, but hopefully we get some in here. Maybe even recluses like Sef because it's not so busy.
(4.31 KB 256x256 Oekaki)

Well guys, OP here. If you wannabstay here, you're more than welcome, I personally prefer it here because this thread has been civil and I'm super glad to see people actually post their work and talk about hosts. What do you guys think of self hosting? Coding a website on wordpress or Neocities and having the pages on a server or image host of sorts. Or as a pdf viewer.
>>50033 people seem to be upset that I comment on your comic, maybe I can just comment here instead. Hehehehe. Meido. Okay that wasn't much of a comment anyway. >>50037 there's so many restrictions these days, if someone decides part of your comic is offensive to the Gafat people or something, and as you try to explain they no longer exist, you get double banned... but if you can find a good host (I have heard good things about neocities actually) then I think you can just use a program that automatically makes and updates the site for you via templates, just like the old free hosts did.
>>50037 >What do you guys think of self hosting? Coding a website on wordpress or Neocities and having the pages on a server or image host of sorts. Or as a pdf viewer. I think self-hosting makes the experience of the webcomic more personal and personalized rather than some giant proto-corpo website dump where the staff of said website has so much control who gets to be seen and who doesn't and succeed as well, which I think taints the creators and interactions. I really think webcomic, at least my autismo definition, is that a true-webcomic is one where you self-host. As much of a puritan about it that I am. I just think there is something wrong about mass hosting on one main website. Like I said earlier, it taints the creators, and then you have to potentially cozy up to staff to get ahead. Self-hosting feels more free and individualistic.
>>50043 Would you at least agree the mass hosting was a lot better when you could customize your site, and it wasn't all mobile garbage? God, the history that was destroyed when smackjeeves decided to shit the bed.. that is a library of alexandria fire, at least a small one.
>>50046 >Would you at least agree the mass hosting was a lot better when you could customize your site Yes and no, I think it was bound to always run into the problem of staff being shitheads and controlling your work and artistic vision if they didn't like you. You essentially have a boss who doesn't pay you, but they get paid instead.
>>50050 you forgot "stops updating and the staff disappear" Comicgenesis still has zero compunctions about content as long as you put a correct rating in their system (doesn't even have to be on the site). and the sites are up! ... but that's about it. About once a year I get in touch with the last remaining mod about keeping an eye on things, fixing forum access, whatever, and she always gives me a few replies before disappearing
>>50037 Yeah, I really would like this place to be faster while still being clean, something like early og 8chan.
>>50083 ahhhh old 8chan was great. I dunno what was going on on SOME boards, but on the cartoon ones it was fine. Nothin fishy.
>>48561 here's some more character designs i got goin on the pool ball guys are for a different thing but other than that i might make the colors a lil less muted for the characters in the 2nd pic. what do you guys think?
>>50101 Close enough, welcome back the felt. but seriously, white haired dude and white robot are fun designs. I like 2, 3 4, 5 and the heart, it feels like I can tell some character from their design alone which is nice. Nothing else grabs my attention. Not to say they're bad designs, if I knew the character I'd probably get a little more attached, but right now they're fine, just a bit generic.
>>50101 the green and white dude in the second pic reminds me of TOM and I like him already on that basis alone.
>>50101 thoroughly badass. I'm getting kinda Epithet Erased vibes. Badassery without being overly serious about itself.
>>50129 sounds like i need to do some workshoppin' on my end but im glad you like em >>50144 funny enough i based him more off of proxy from the force unleashed games but i see why it reminds you of tom >>50167 thank you! im not that big a fan of epitaph cuz of various reasons but im glad you like it! >Badassery without being overly serious about itself. seems like my mission is accomplished since thats exactly what i was goin for :D
>>50187 oh don't get me wrong I have also fallen away from it.. but back in the day it had somethin good goin on. and I still listen to Great at Crime once in a while.
>>50101 For the pool ball guys I'd think of a progressive size pattern like the Dalton brothers of Lucky Luke. The striped balls are strictly a B-team that shows up in the endgame.
>>50281 i have that same idea for the stripes but there's a reason why 9 is in the main team, like dimebag darrell turning down joining megadeth, 6 and 9 are a package deal, cant have one without the other cuz theyre brothers :P

>>46668 i don't know if i'll ever get to actually work on a full webcomic because my writing sucks, but i'm certainly passionate about my characters and have been trying to work on a "medieval" story with some modern elements(because i think it's nice to be in the 14th century and have somehow a decent healthcare, coke and evolved science lol). dumb i know, but i think art can be made just for fun too and without being too deep. still trying to figure out the full story, but it's about cults pretty much. first time actually posting my art here but here's some of the designs so far(third one is still just me brainstorming, i need to figure him out) and last one is the vibe i'm going for pretty much.
>>51326 Coool. Igor is rocking the "Tom DesLongchamp when he had hair" look
>>51326 The dark ages weren't that dark. People who survived their first 3-4 years would live to be 60-80, unless famine or retarded accidents happened. Hygeiene and sanitation were well understood but the convenient infrastructure wasn't there. Cities were of course terrible places and pollution controls are pretty modern. Anyway, you could make a few short stories in the ballpark of 1-4 pages. Throw in anything you want and reset the world between your attempts.
>>51401 He didn't say otherwise, he just said it'd be nice if people weren't dying of plague all the time. Honestly it's so weird to me that life expectancy stats don't at LEAST separate out infectious disease vs dying of worn-out organs. But you'll never stop normies from regurgitating the silly facts they read about the dark ages, which.. already kind of didn't exist?
>>51401 I know, it's why I don't call it the dark ages, but medieval ages. I'm bad at wording things, but I mean the 14th century + some more modern elements that involve things like laboratories and such. All my characters have decent hygiene because I hate the stereotype that medieval people didn't ever bathe. And thanks for the tips, I'll definitely start small!
>>51409 My number changed but it's the same anon, just specifying.

>>54012 These lil sketches are fun. are you saving these? a collage of them later perhaps? I love how Euros drink blackcurrant cordials. I've had that, it's not bad. Wait.. steam juicer? wait, HOT? oh these rabbitses.. they drive me to drink.
how do I make comic panels perfectly aligned to each other?
>>54094 What program are you using, chum? There's probably a grid feature. I just eyeball it, which is decently easy, especially if you just draw another line in another color, touching one panel border, then select it AND the border, so you can move them together, until the line you drew is touching the other panel you're trying to line it up with. bingo. Of course the easiest way is to just draw them as one panel to begin with, then split them up.
I am not collecting these doodles. I use the rectangle selection tool to align things. https://tapas.io/episode/3590351

>>54096 >What program are you using, chum? clip studio paint pro but I dunno how to use any of it's fancier tools or even where to find them. I basically only know the brush and eraser tool haha
>>54877 well it's time to look through them, and don't be afraid to look up tutorials. In this case, there's two major ways to do it. One is using either the square marquee to select a square, then fill it with black, then go to select > shrink selected area, then delete, or flat-out using the shape tool in rectangle mode The other is using an actual vector shape tool thingy. I haven't played around with that yet, the only one I have set up is making a rounded balloon, but one thing is for sure, vector lineart is awesome and I wish I'd started using it sooner. Whichever tool you use, make sure to click on the wrench at some point, and check the boxes for any options that sound cool, so they'll actually appear (and hovering over them will give you an indication of what they do). By default, many good options are hidden.
>>54883 Oh and.. if you're cooler than me and your panels aren't just squares, then y'know, same thing. line tools. you can just use those ON a vector layer and you'll have the benefits, too.
>>54883 >>54936 thanks! trying out the methods you described at the moment- though I had to eyeball the rectangle border to the border of the canvas. the shrink selection is a really cool tool
>>54980 ooooh a skewed rhombus. Very cool. I'm glad I could help. People in general should not be taking art advice from me, but in a situation like this where I'm pretty sure there's just like two or three of us... I gotta pipe up.

It finally rained and I can think again. https://tapas.io/episode/3606604
>>55289 Heat is hurtin your brain, eh? I guess a lot of people can't afford AC anymore. Mine is now the highest non-rent bill I've ever paid by a wide margin. They tripled it. I'm spending more on AC than I used to spend on food. Melty rabbit...

8chang would't let me post, so tiresome. I don't even have an AC as it's only really useful 0-3 weeks per year. https://tapas.io/episode/3613281
>>55645 Yeah aitchan had a brief downage. Ahh I miss living somewhere that only had 0-3 weeks of brutal heat, but even in that place, me and the computer generated plenty on our own. And anything above 60 is still too warm for me.
