Pixar’s ‘Elio’ Overhauled: Rewrites, Director Swap, and a $300M Budget https://archive.fo/KoKE4 >Back in 2023, a source revealed that the studio had serious concerns about the film during production, indicating it needed substantial reworking. Initially slated for a March 2024 release, “Elio” was delayed to June 2025. The release delay seems to confirm those struggles. >“Elio” was initially directed by Adrian Molina, but in 2024, he was replaced due to a “scheduling conflict,” which absolutely nobody believes. Despite his departure, Molina still holds a co-directing credit. The film is now being led by Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian (“Turning Red”). >Behind the scenes, “Elio” has experienced major upheaval throughout its lengthy development, to the point where the budget tipped toward the $300M mark. A significant portion of the creative team was replaced midway through production—which, if you’ve seen both the 2023 and 2025 trailers, explains the dramatic shift in tone and style. While most of the character designs have remained intact, the latest trailer, released last month, revealed that some heroes and villains swapped roles entirely. >Alongside the director change, the film underwent extensive revisions in both its narrative and character development. The trailer also confirmed that Zoe Saldaña was now voicing Elio’s aunt, Olga Solis, replacing America Ferrera, who was originally cast as his mother but exited due to—wait for it—scheduling issues. >The earlier trailer leaned into a more somber sci-fi, highlighting Elio’s emotional distance from his hardworking mother. Although comedic elements were present later in the trailer, the overall portrayal of the protagonist was notably gloomier. That contrasts sharply with the lighter, more upbeat tone seen in the updated footage—and that’s all Domee Shi’s doing, as she was tasked with making it a more comedic affair. >A good film might still emerge when “Elio” premieres next month, but cautious optimism is warranted given the considerable drama surrounding the production since it began in the summer of 2022.

If there wasn't a post to go alongside that image I would have just assumed it was some AI generated picture. Almost every animated film in the past decade now has the exact same look beyond just the typical Calarts style. It makes me feel like I've been taking crazy pills since 2012.

>>51415 Alot of Nu Pixars art looks like its copying the Steven Universe aesthetic, which is tumblr with a large dash of Studio Ghibli and other surface level anime designs.

>>51427 Friendly reminder that pearl was originally supposed to end with greg, but whatshername who forced the lapidot ship forced that she should be a pure lez. And even that went nowhere outside of like 3 episodes.
Another disney failure inbound. When its all said and done I dont think pandering to middle America will save this dumpsterfire company either.
>>51427 Alot of recent hires got their starts on the many beanmouth shows of the 2010's. That's how you end up with Thurop Van Orman directing the Angry Birds movie for instance, not to mention Sucrose at Sony Pictures. You only fail upwards in hollywood.
>>51408 And it still looks like a nothing safe movie.

Pixar? One word title? Amorphous glowing blobs? Gonna be trash.
>>51408 >calarts beanmouth Blow me down, I thought this appaling art style was mocked a fucking decade ago and it's still here. Can Pixar please fucking do better, you degenerated husk of a company? Seriously, I am genuinely stunned this is what the film looks like.
>>51408 >>Alongside the director change, the film underwent extensive revisions in both its narrative and character development. Decided to actually rewatch the trailers just to see how "much" changed. The original trailer basically gave the impression that the story was essentially a reverse of the Tezuka's manga Wonder 3. For those not familiar with the manga, W3 was essentially about how three aliens come to Earth to "judge" our species and decide if the human race was worth exterminating or had the potential to become a peaceful race. Honestly, I wasn't too impressed with the story. Where Elio differs is that Elio is mistaken for Earth's leader and brought before the intergalactic council as the defendent of a trial where Earth is being judged for some yet-to-be-declared crime. And fearing for his life, adopts the position. If I was to speculate on the "message", it could be about how parents have responsibilities and commitments that require them spend time away from their kids, NOT because they don't love them but, because there are bigger problems in the world (From paying bills to fighting people that could kill them). However the new trailers for Elio is LITERALLY AND UNIRONICALLY Shark Tale, except with the "twist" that Elio wants to be abducted in the first place because life on Earth "sucks", and the aliens comply because "he's a dreamer". Also, there's vore bait in the new trailer.
