Obscure and one off or short run shows Anonymous 09/09/2025 (Tue) 02:23:38 No. 56684
Recently discovered What It's like Being Alone. I'm surprised I'd never heard of this one when it was airing as it's right up my alley for adult animation as a weird show focused on black comedy. Only on the third episode, but it could be described as The Addams Family combined with The Oblongs. Princess Lucy is even very similar to Helga Phugly from The Oblongs in both personality and character design. Aldous reminds me a bit of Creepy Suzy too. Unfortunately I can't find a better quality version online than what's on youtube and no streaming service or torrent sites I've searched has it. Entire series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKS8OggZ8cg Another one I found recently a few months ago is Quads! created by the same guy who made Pelswick for Nickelodeon. The creator, John Callahan, was a quadriplegic from a drunk driving accident who started drawing after regaining partial use of his hands. The main character is an author avatar right down to the alcoholism. As someone who has struggled with mental illness my entire life and even been involuntarily committed a few times it's actually refreshing to find a show that is willing to joke at the absurdity and tragedy of not being normal and functional like most people. Way too much media over the past couple decades doesn't even want to touch the subject of mental or physical disability in a way that isn't at least a bit patronizing, much less joke about it more than occasional one off gags. I feel I can't even talk about it openly online much without some mental illness tumblr type butting in and acting like I'm an asshole for even mentioning a desire to be normal or being self aware enough to recognize the absurdity and sometimes laughing at my own mental illness, probably be dead from suicide already if I couldn't laugh at myself sometimes. Quads! at least has some torrents available and is all on Tubi for free. There's an official youtube channel too with most of the series, but a few episodes are missing from it for some reason: https://www.youtube.com/@johncallahansquads7575

There was a nearly forgotten Kids' WB cartoon called Detention that ran for a single season. The only memorable aspects were Shareena and those twins. Here is the whole season on the Archive: https://archive.org/details/detention-07-comedy-of-terrors-convert-video-online.com

>>56747 More people probably recognize The Addams Family than The Munsters because there's been more adaptations of the former and The Munsters was inspired by the Addams Family comics with Universal wanting to do a sitcom with their monster movies to go off of. The Munsters as pop culture is a lot more contained to the 60s-70s. Allan Burns, one of the writers for The Munsters, even said "We sort of stole the idea from Charles Addams and his New Yorker cartoons.... Because Universal owned the Frankenstein character and the Dracula character for movie rights, they decided to take their characters instead of the characters we had written." The Munsters did have a revival in the late 80s, but when that ended there wasn't anything produced for two decades until an attempt at a darker and edgier reboot in 2012 that got canceled after the pilot was produced followed by a decade long gap until the poorly received Rob Zombie movie in 2022. The Addams Family by comparison has more consistently had stuff that was well received being made and still has new stuff actively being made for it. The Addams Family was also a lot more popular in the 90s and 00s due to a cartoon and live action films and tv series being made in the 90s and being aired a lot when The Munsters just didn't have anything going on other than syndicated reruns. Probably doesn't help that Universal can be very controlling of their IPs. Frankenstein is public domain, but Universal has gone after people for portraying the monster as the flat top, bolt on neck version they own the rights to for example. Personally my introduction to The Addams Family was reruns of the 90s cartoon on Cartoon Network and the live action films airing on cable and a lot of people still love those versions especially. I just didn't have the same awareness of The Munsters as a kid beyond occasionally seeing it on TVLand if staying up late.
>>56742 The goth chick is cute, in a very budget 90's sort of way. >>56747 Hey, I remember the Munsters. There's probably a lot of younger kids who know about the show due to its theme getting sampled in a Fall Out Boy song some years back.
>>56747 Yeah but that's a quirky comedy. WILBA is a dark comedy where the misery is the joke.
Since it was mentioned in another thread, Spliced is pretty good, but had limited original broadcast. I only heard of it in the past year. It was produced in 2008 for Teletoon, but didn't actually air on that channel until 2010. Cartoon Network only put it on their app while Qubo only had it on normal broadcast for about a month before removing it from the lineup for year then putting it on their Night Owl block before removing it from the channel entirely a couple years later. I'm guessing the networks neglecting it and Qubo moving it to their late night block was because of the gross out humor and comedic body horror that might be a bit gruesome for younger kids. Example of the latter is the two lead characters get briefly turned inside out in an episode. Entire series is on Tubi currently. As mentioned in the other thread it's "What if Dr. Moreau got arrested and sent to prison with all the crazy and weird experiments left to their own devices on the island?" Pretty good show and reminds me of 90s to early 00s era Nickelodeon. The creators (Simon Racioppa and Richard Elliott) apparently mentioned Ren and Stimpy as an influence which isn't surprising after watching it. I was a bit surprised one of the creators is the showrunner for Invincible and both were writers for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
