Naugus was a character in a single episode of SatAM (and I think he was referenced in at least one other). He was the royal wizard who discovered The Void, a prison dimension that Robotnik then sealed the king in, and also he sealed Naugus at the same time. Robotnik seems to show some fear of Naugus. When Sonic and Sally get sent to The Void, they find Naugus and the king, and Naugus has seemingly shaped The Void and sort of become its master, making a crystal palace or something. But I guess The Void was already filled with Crystal and Naugus just shaped it slightly. Anyway he helps them get out, but he can't leave himself because being in The Void too long made it so if he did leave he would turn to crystal. And also The King can't leave for the same reason. The show kind of acts like he's a villainous force, but the one time he appears he helps Sonic and Sally. The series finale ends with a pair of glowing red eyes that were clearly going to be Knuckles, but the showrunner later said he was going to make them Naugus, who would be a major villain in Season 3. But that seems like a later decision, after the eyes were drawn, as they don't look like Naugus, they look like Knuckles.
After the show was cancelled, the people making the Archie comics decided to essentially treat those comics as a continuation of the show. They were technically a separate continuity, but in #28, they do a story that sort of lines things up with how the show ended, and then continue from there. They do Void stories, but Sonic got out too easily, so they instead say that that The Void isn't where the King was imprisoned, he was really in The Zone of Silence, which is exactly like The Void but somehow worse. Anyway Naugus is there and they meet him, but now he's much more explicitly villainous. He explicitly has the power to turn things (and people) into Crystal. Also, he's called Ixis Naugus. After Robotnik dies in #50, Naugus becomes the main villain for the next two years, until Robotnik comes back so they can adapt Sonic Adventure.
Around that same period, they introduce a character called Mammoth Mogul, who is an ancient caveman, err, mammoth, who has used his long life to influence history and learn all sorts of different skills, including magic. He's a direct ripoff of Vandal Savage from DC Comics. And he has a Chaos Emerald embedded in his chest, which he uses for magic stuff. At this point in the comics there were like infinity Chaos Emeralds and no Master Emerald, just a big Chaos Emerald powering Angel Island, but eventually Mogul gets defeated and sealed in his own emerald, which makes it special and it becomes the Master Emerald. This actually happened before they revealed Chaos was sealed in The Master Emerald in the games.
So in the comics, since the Master Emerald wasn't ancient, they had to say Chaos was sealed in a different thing called the Black Diamond, also known as the Black Onyx, which would later appear in Sonic Superstars, though this is clearly a coincidence, since the two Black Onyxes belong to different civilizations which held them since ancient times. Anyway, Robotnik shatters the Black Onyx to free Chaos, but Chaos still has to shatter the Master Emerald to make the story closer to the plot of Sonic Adventure, so he does, and then later they do say that that freed Mammoth Mogul. Anyway both the Master Emerald and Black Onyx get restored by the heroes.
Once Mogul was free they revealed that actually his title was Ixis Mogul, and he was the founder of The Order of Ixis, which included Ixis Naugus. In fact, he was Naugus's master. Now, this is bullshit, because Naugus is a much cooler character, but for a couple years Naugus gets brain damaged and turned into a drooling retard, and Mogul just kind of has him around to be freaky. Also they reveal that Naugus was originally three beings that were each Ixis wizards and after a giant war were the only ones other than Mogul who survived, and they fused to form Naugus. Anyway the Order of Ixis, including Mogul, have "Crystal Magic," like Naugus, but Mogul has more magic and skills so we just never really saw him use it before.
Meanwhile, in the future, Mogul is a good guy and mentor to Silver the Hedgehog. It seems like his turn might be tied to how Naugus, after having his mind restored, managed to become king and fuck up the future in some major way. However, right around this time, Robotnik and Dr. Wily from Mega Man teamed up and did some reality bending stuff which changed the timeline, but Sonic fucked it up so it only changed things a little bit, and didn't fully make it so they ruled the universes. Now Mogul seemingly never existed, and Silver's mentor was instead Professor von Schlemmer, a character from The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Notably, he lived in the present in the cartoon, but maybe this is his descendant, or maybe he lived a long time, or maybe he travelled to the future, or maybe he's from the future and went to the past in the cartoon.
Meanwhile, Naugus was defeated, and his history was also changed so that he was never those three other wizards, but for a while he remembered being them and they haunted his mind, as some main characters had lingering memories of the old timeline. This really didn't lead anywhere and it felt like they only did it because this same idea was used in The Crisis on Infinite Earths to justify times when a writer fucked up and accidentally referenced old continuity. Since Sonic was only two series written by the same guy, they really didn't need it, even when they did their Crisis ripoff story.
Anyway Naugus's new history was that his name was Walter Naugus, and he was a troll, of an ancient race of trolls. He was the brother of Wendy Naugus, AKA Witchkart, the villain from Tails Skypatrol, who was a witch. They had an evil wizard and an evil witch, so they paired them up. She now had Crystal Magic too, even though she didn't seem to have anything like that in Skypatrol. Notably, though, there's an arc where they flash back to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit) and show that the secret final level, Crystal Egg Zone, was the result of "The Naugus Twins" attacking Eggman's base at right around the time Sonic was getting there, turning it Crystal.
In the penultimate arc of the series, Naugus, who is no longer even called Ixis Naugus in this new continuity, reveals that his people, The Trolls, worshipped a primordial force from the beginning of time called Ixis, who destroyed "The Second Great Civilization," (presumably the trolls.) He and Wendy are seemingly the only survivors, and still worship his great power, but he was sealed by "lesser chaotic forces," and they seemingly want to free him.
But the point is that Naugus remembers The Order of Ixis, and his real origin, even though it's not "canon" anymore. It's like how Silver remembers his old futures even after he changes them. (Well, if he was the one who changed them. He doesn't seem to remember times they get changed for other reasons, and Sonic changing the future in '06 seemed to result in two totally different Silvers.) Or maybe Mogul does still exist. Nothing says he doesn't, he just stopped appearing. Clearly he worshipped Ixis too.
And clearly this Amo being is Ixis under another name. Obviously.
And crystal? So he turns things immobile? Sounds like the opposite of speed to me. The opposite of Chaos. Which might be what this current manga is actually thinking. But why does Yuuta slow things down too? Is his power connected to Amo? I think that would be cool and fitting. Like maybe how Sonic and Chaos both represent chaos, but the good and bad aspects of it, maybe Yuuta, or I guess Metostri, and Amo both represent order, but the good and bad aspects of it.
Naugus and his Crystal magic were never really clearly used as a direct opposite of Sonic and his speed/freedom. Hopefully they're clever enough to do that here. But this manga seems like it's aimed at an even younger audience than most of the Archie comics (at least the ones Naugus appeared in), so maybe that's getting too deep for them. Not that that will stop me. They are clearly doing a thing where Yuuta is seemingly the opposite of Sonic (and his power goes with that) but they both have heroic spirits, so there's that, but I wonder how far they'll go with it.
