>Quantifying the efficacy of different methods of meditation
I don't think there's such a thing as ranking meditation methods.
You just have to practice, do it often, invoke often, or fake it until you get it right, and follow medical advice as much as possible.
I like (and know these)
>Breath
-Box/square breath or any number of times you want and more time - the golden dawn and the military of today and therapist use this for relaxation
-Anapasanti
-deep breath
-diaphragmatic breathing (If you concentrate on your stomach, you will achieve some body awareness)
-reverse breathing
-Fire breath/fast-breath (warning with this, is used in sports, dont use it in watersports)
-Pore skin respiration/ body awareness breath (similar to some qigong techniques i dont remember the name, bardon have this technique)
-Combination: or combine with other techniques like visualizations (breath light, smoke, colors/ entering in your nose nostrils or naddis or etc)
-or with somatic exercizes (similar to qi gong or same)
-Anulon Vilom or alternate nostril breath (and variations)
>Gaze
focusing on something (Gaze on a thing or focus on mantra or body or visualization) like
-disc color kasina
-fire kasina, tatrak gaze on canddles
-tattwas or color geometry gaze (used in pathwork)
-wall gazing (like zen monks)
-sky gazing (like tibet monks)
eye gazing or gaze your fingers (this sometimes can make you start to see
aura or for me, the retinal burn effect of light or synesthesia colors if you're lucky) the qigong, new agers and in some kriya yoga techniques use this
>Body awareness or physical exercises
somatic exercises or you can do light physical exercises, slowly exercises or yoga, cardio or martial katas moves, dance.
or you can combine techniques and call it chi-qi gong shit with some hypnosis of energy-belief and visualizations (visual imaginery with body awareness and hypnosis)
>Hypnosis (if you want)
You can add Hypnosis to this, Hypnosis is not the same as meditation, from what I have read about clinical hypnosis and scientific studies, at least the brain responds differently to the two. But you can turn hypnosis into meditation and relaxation (as the Chinese and others do in qigong) and achieve body awareness and ideomotor reflex effect in you.
I do Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) with hypnosis, eye fixation and sometimes i play with other techniques.
>Analyzing the brain's state during energy work or within an altered state of consciousness
It's a bit useless, but I guess it's okay... There are studies on that in PubMed about Christian monks, Buddhist monks, and even people who hypnotize themselves and so on.
>Determining if the astrologer for my university newspaper is a real psychic or just a FAKE MUNDIE POSER
Yes, it is very likely that he only writes in the astrology session because he was forced to and not because he wants to. sometimes these even know anything about astrology than Forer and cognitive bias of taging people into personality meme archetypes of signs and ignoring the amount of thing of astrology and etc.
