TL;DR: In my opinion, racism being discussed in a story doesn't need to force a reexamination of someone's views, it just needs to tell a good story and have what we see be mostly consistent with what we're told. Those people too firmly set in their views will reject introspection anyway, those who are rational will be given food for thought as an aside to their enjoyment of the plot.
