Qubes OS Anonymous 12/05/2021 (Sun) 22:46:24 No. 6580 >>18710>>18754>>21304
thoughts?
As an example, for me is more than enough to have filesystems (I can chroot into anytime) for old linux distributions with very specific versions of apps I use. It seems for me that qube is an another "fresh software" and containers runner.
There are far worse systems you could use, it's not bad.
probably the best OS when it comes to both privacy and security. although I do have a question for people that use it as a daily driver: is playing games on it a stupid idea? read somewhere that gaming on it would be slow and that it was not a good idea to do so, which is what makes me not switch to it already tbh.
>>6929 There isn't any 3d acceleration so you can't play games.
>>6929 Yea games are basically a no-go. I use a laptop running QubesOS for most things, but I keep a PC for games and anything else with even slightly demanding graphics. Some people have figured out how to get GPU passthrough working, but it's difficult and largely undocumented. Overall, QubesOS is easily my favorite OS. I've uninstalled it a couple times for the convenience of something else, but I always come crawling back to it because I literally just don't feel safe on anything else lol.
Other than the graphics performance, poor suspend support is also really annoying. Being able to suspend a running VM to disk is pretty useful, especially to temporarily put away work when RAM is low.
I daily drive it. Dunnno what else I would use. Imagine allowing any jeet program having access to any file in your home directory. Qubes isolation gives a peace of mind.
Use it if you're doing something very illegal. If you're not doing something super illegal, the pain of using it isn't worth it.
>>18134 >muh pain Git gud fagit. Qubes split-gpg and split-ssh capabilities alone are enough of a reason to use it.
>>18117 >Dunnno what else I would use Run all vulnerable applications from browsers to file managers, mpv etc. in system containers with Incus (or LXD), see linuxcontainers.org. Not as secure as Qubes, but easily solves fs access problems and you can give specific gpu/usb/pci device access, separate networks and limit resources.
ebussi.jpg aside, what's the use case for Qubes? In what situation would you use Qubes and not either Tails or a 'normal' distro running VMs?
I never understood why people use "alternative" operating systems. Then feel the need to tell the world about it.
>>18615 Where do you think you are?
I like the idea of Qubes, but Xen is a shitty bloated hypervisor. I'd love to see a Qubes-type system built on top of NOVA or Muen-SK.
>>18590 >Split-gpg >Split-ssh >Having your passwords qube isolated from the internet and other qubes >Running random large language models with gpu passthrough on internet-isolated qubes >Running whonixOS qubes and routing everything through tor And lots more.
Can you help me anon im trying to start to use it, install debian and windows etc. Or any guidance will help
>>6580 (OP) Now those goddamned Chinese hackers will NEVER get their hands on your... your book of fairy tales
>>18709 Just drop into their forum if you need help: https://forum.qubes-os.org
>>18715 so much bloat but thanks
>>6580 (OP) I want to like it so bad, but i'm a poorfag with no gpu passthrough capabilities, so it sucks.
>>18157 Does it runs sus pirated games well?
>>7591 If it's made for running VMs, in theory you could run a linux or windows VM and use PCIE passthrough?
>>18772 just use bottles for that fam
>>18772 its not made for games but yea im pretty sure you can run games on it depending on what you running it on
>>18772 Steam, games etc. yes. System container is a minimal distro within a distro and uses host kernel. You give it gpu access and x/wayland/pulse/pipewire sockets with necessary libs and games run just like on host and you can even use host fs/disks.
>>6580 (OP) Disclosure: I haven't used Qubes in quite a while. Qubes is supposed to be a distro made for personal security, but people think its "security" is bullshit, for multiple reasons (QEMU and Xen have had many vulns; VMs really are not the same as isolation, ...). I was surprised to see that programs in the VMs are running as root... so I kinda agree with that. I'd guess you could easily pivot between VMs if you have 0days for QEMU. You can play games on Qubes. There are some guides out there for that (not sure how outdated they are though). You need a dedicated GPU for that, though, and ideally an AMD GPU, IIRC. Qubes is really cool if you believe you are safer because of like tinkering with stuff, but it gets tiring after a while. The usability(?) of the UI kinda sucks; it's written in python so crashes happen sometimes, etc. Also, Xen, QEMU, etc. have some limitations (eg: you can't run nested VMs, which would be really nice for researching stuff or, hell, working with emulators and shit). I also was never able to get a Windows VM to work. YMMV.
