UMPC/Handheld thread Anonymous 06/03/2023 (Sat) 18:44:40 Id: 6d9cdb No. 837183
Old thread: >>608298 News >The Rog Ally has released, and it's.. fine. The claimed 2-3x performance boost was closer to 5%-30% and the custom GUI isn't anywhere near the level of the Deck >The Edion in Osaka talked about last thread has set up a longer-term or possibly permanent Steam Deck display following a presumably successful 'trial market', Japan is now one of the few, if not only, countries to sell the Steam Deck at major retailers >Computer and hardware manufacturer Orange Pi has soft-announced their first handheld after a leak. It reportedly accommodates both Linux/Windows, the device will either use a 7800U or a RK3588S processor for the higher-end model and will launch in October with three models costing between an estimated 1500元 ($220) and 3500元 ($500), though prices are not final. There is no publicly known name for the device yet >Gaming analyst firm Omdia estimates Steam Deck has sold over 2,000,000 units so far, having sold 1,600,000 in 2021 alone, and will likely surpass 3,000,000 this year. This makes the SD not just the bestselling UMPC in history, but possibly majority of UMPC sales ever. The firm believes the device "will open the door to a new PC gaming product category" Thread questions >What do you own? >What are you playing on it? >Anybody gotten involved in the scary world of hardmodding yet, and how did it go? >Anything you're excited for? CES 2025 UPDATE Lenovo Legion Go S will be the first non-Steam device to use the OS. https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/593110/view/529834914570306831 A big takeaway here >In addition, the same work that we are doing to support the Lenovo Legion Go S will improve compatibility with other handhelds. Ahead of Legion Go S shipping, we will be shipping a beta of SteamOS which should improve the experience on other handhelds, and users can download and test this themselves. And of course we'll continue adding support and improving the experience with future releases. So they're now allowing users to download SteamOS directly, though it still sounds like it's a handheld-focused version of the OS.

>>1461102 i keep forgetting the crank doesn't do shit.
I got a phone with controller, which is more than fine. But i also been thinking of getting something on the side. Either better or more portable. Like a R36H for GBA games. Though i recently found odin 2 and it's relatively cheap, it also has a full usb-c which should be compatible with retroid's second screen addon, so i might get that. But i also adore the DS/3DS look of the retroid pocket mini v2 with second screen bundle. But i also don't want to become a person that has like multiple chink handhelds, Pic related it's RP5 with it's second screen addon. Before anyone starts any of these SteamOS or windows handhelds feel too large and bulky for me. I know android style or small linux ones fit my needs a lot better. >>1208857 >>1218411 Honestly not wrong. If you got phone that runs those system you listed at desired performance, then buying a controller for said phone could be the best budget option. Of course cons for phone controller can be: needing to charge the controller, unless you buy usb c type, but then you risk wearing out your usb connection. It adds some weight to the phone so it might appear heavy or odd to hold at first. Some people hate it. It's kinda awkward to take calls and if you keep the whole thing together you might have trouble trying to take it around. still i got g8 controller fairly cheap and don't regret getting it. Helped me kill times when i got appointments but knew i had to sit around for hours doing nothing. I don't know about gamecube, but i watched retroid pocket 5 video where various ps2 games were tested and they run flawlessly even upscaled a little. >>1461102 I think the basic idea was cute, but not 200 dollar worth of cute. At least not for me.
>>1463744 and here I thought the entire point of the thing was the crank doing shit
Honestly i have hard time deciding because i don't really want to own multiple devices, if i can help it. Odin 2 portal: i like this, not that expensive and SD 8 gen 2 is still pretty recent if i understand it right. So it's kind of still worth it, at least the 512GB model for me. Retroid pocket 5 with secondary screen addon: honestly my only gripe is that it only has 128GB space, 256 would be slightly better. At least my experience with 128GB space wasn't super perfect. 256GB is usually my preferred size. I'm rocking a 512GB model, because it lacks SD card. Though for "smaller" handheld i'm looking at RG40XX H (i never actually had vertical handheld, but i feel like i prefer horizontal ones) though i could also aim for Helegaly Action Pi too. But is now an ayaneo dual screen android device too. I would also like to see, if retroid pocket 6 might be better dollar deal for handheld device than odin 2 portal etc.

>>1622273 I was about to update this thread, and your post makes for a perfect segue. <portal Not to my taste, but power to you. However, may I recommend the 7th generation Anbermic devices? I've been rocking the AYN Odin 2 Mini myself for the past year but recently it's suffered a spicy battery pillow that broke the case. Anbermic recently released both the RG577M and the RG477M, and the RG477M seems to consolidate everything I've bought the Odin 2 for in a much cheaper package. >$220-250 USD price for the 477M, $250-280 USD for the 577M >actual AMOLED screen in the 577M vs MiniLED and IPS >hardware is basically blow-for-blow for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with an equally powerful GPU and a slightly weaker CPU; overall, at these price points the new Anbermic models quickly take the value king crown from AYN >still retains the upper limit of pocketability >battery capacity is slighter larger too >straight up better sticks; I lost my thumbsticks because of how AYN designed them to be removable and ended up losing them when they popped out as I pulled the Mini out of my pocket Overall, I might just buy a 477M when formal sales open up and switch my games over before I contact AYN support to fix my Mini. There are some negatives: <hate the colored buttons and schemes <Anbermic haven't had the best reputation for a long time, though this is a nice return to form for them <the flat design doesn't seem to address my criticism of the Mini, where you can inadvertently lay the device down and have it overheat from the airflow being blocked <with the Mali GPU it's a mixed bag, because while you get way better community support and custom ROMs you also get poorer drivers that hamper performance out of the box, your mileage may vary <Anbermic tend to do some funky software stuff that may impact some titles you want to play; for example with the 577M they rooted Android in a way that broke a lot of games, and with these handhelds they're pushing a mediocre gayI solution to be integrated into the OS But still, with the 4:3 ratio it's as close as you can get to an all-in-one device at the moment. Who knows how the tariffs kicking in in September will affect pricing for burgers, but Anbermic seem to have prepared for it much better than AYN as they already offer domestic shipping (unless you're in SEA, in which case it's irrelevant) that bumps the price up $30 USD. There's also some insane designs coming out from firms like ONEXSugar, but I'll save those for another post.

>>1622341 >a spicy battery pillow that broke the case
>>1622341 Really my biggest gripe with anbernic is that i really don't trust mediatec SOCs. I want something with 16:9 for wide screen games. I thought of getting 4:3 on the side for GBA, PS1 and N64 on the go. But i also could just deal with black sides on portal. Also i'm from EU so i'm not influenced by tarriffs hopefully. I'm not rushing to buy anything. It will be just an early Christmas gift for myself. Though i'm rocking a Poco F6 with G8 controller. So i might not need any of these. I just think they are neat. Still something to dual screen meme NDS/3DS because used ones are expensive as heck or are like very used so i don't feel like dropping 200-300 dollar on them. Fucking resellers usually buy it up fast in the local market or people are selling at 300 dollar because they copy ebay prices. Heck i see regular switch for 150 dollar lol
>>1622273 I have an Odin 2 Pro, and it is just perfect, good battery life, ergonomic and excellent performance on anything you throw at it, but input lag, which is better on the Portal, can be noticeable on Rhythm games or similar. No need to buy the Max model, since you can use a microSD for more space and 12gb of RAM is more than enough. Also, wtf are you on about? The RP5 does have a SD slot, and I would consider it the true Odin 2 Mini, because it's smaller and lighter, and has a similar performance, except on 'heavier' games like a few PS2 titles and Switch games. Also, the screen is amazing, but battery life sucks. >>1622341 You have to be careful with these 8000mAh batteries, no overcharge, not even charging to 100% and don't let it sit unused for too long with a full battery And remember folks, despite everything, these are chink made products, they are premium portables, however are not built to last.
>>1622995 yeah. so i was retard and tired. The 512GB thing is my phone poco f6 that lacks SD card slot. Yeah for portal i just go with 512GB model. I thought about getting regular odin 2 max because of the discount code. But i think oled would be nice so i'm aiming at portal currently.

>handheld general >posting massive bricks that are not portable without a dedicated carry case, a backpack or a bag you can maybe cope that the Switch is a handheld because it will fit in a pocket if you take off the joycons, but a Switch 2, a Steamdeck or anything else are just not handhelds in any way it is the worst compromise possible between a laptop and an actual handheld, there are no advantages to this form factor I will shill the deck just because it's pushing gaming on Linux, but if we're being real it's a fucking retarded design, just buy a laptop at that point >>839658 >>975506 many have asked this and the answer is sadly no basically Sony patented the design with the Xperia Play and now that there's actual demand for something like this they refuse to make one or license it or whatever, so no one is making it the closest thing you can get is a phone cover with that slideout mechanism, there is one that was getting crowdfunded, but it was like $200 or something retarded like that, and was really bulky so I never got one I forget the name

>>1648403 <handheld general <posting massive bricks that are not portable without a dedicated carry case, a backpack or a bag i was thinking about those vita looking gpd ones but hot damn they are expensive, cheapest one i could find second hand was around 700 bucks, new ones go over 1k >basically Sony patented the design with the Xperia Play and now that there's actual demand for something like this they refuse to make one or license it or whatever, so no one is making it the patent expired and anbernic made their own sliding mechanism emulation handheld its way bigger than the xperia play and psp go however so that might be a dealbreaker
>>1649434 this shell looks 1:1 to that slideout phone controller cover I was talking about I think Snoy probably still has the patent on those super short thumbsticks, although Nintendo did use something similar on their New3DS without getting sued cool that the patent expired though, big if true hopefully Redmagic makes one
Probably a dumb question but i seen some devices having RGB especially around the joysticks. Could these be setup to show how much charge is left? Like how GBA had green led that turned red when low battery? That would be so cool. Otherwise i might just keep the rgb turned off, if it can't do that.
Thread is almost done. Are there actually any better handhelds than the Steam Deck?
>>1655291 If you unironically believe the steam dick is the best, there's no convincing you of anything
(121.43 KB 720x960 693976625.jpg)

>>1655291 if you want something that fits in your pocket
>>1655390 PSP is still goated after all these years.
>>1463744 >>1585321 Well the crank does do something it just doesn't power it like what you'd expect, as if it were an off grid retro handheld or something. It does the same thing that the crank on the DC fishing controller does. It's just another kind of input.
(29.57 MB 1080x1920 20250615_213131.mp4)

>>1655426 Agreed.
>>1655291 if i had move different city monthly or something similar, then instead of a laptop, i might shoot my chances with steam deck. But i feel like on the go i prefer something retroid pocket 5 sized. or one of those 4 inch handhelds.
Any handhelds that you guys would recommend for a cheapskate? I don't need any more power than what would be necessary to run ps1/n64 games. I can also spend about 400 dollars if need be. Heard some things about retroid, but they say it's been plagued by chinese ripoffs and scammers, so I'm taking precaution.
>>1655742 For ps1 you can get stuff for under 100 bucks to run it well n64 is harder to run and there are very little handhelds with 6 button layouts, if you can ignore the latter requirement then options become more numerous ALTHOUGH most if not all handhelds below 400 bucks are going to be chinkshit (they have official stores so do not worry about bootlegs), personally I recommend the odin 2 lineup since they have plenty of power required for n64 emulation and you can use the l2/r2 buttons for the missing face ones
>>1624970 If you can buy the Odin Portal, then go for it mate, but again, there's no need to waste that money on the Max version, because the Pro model is enough to run anything available for android at the moment, and the extra RAM barely makes a difference. Another thing, the Portal is almost the size of a Steam Deck, so keep that in mind if portability is an issue >>1648403 Not only the Steam Deck is fucking massive and can barely fit inside a small bag/backpack and is pretty heavy, it also requires dedicated charging, because you can't charge this shit with a car/bus/plane/PC USB port like a phone or something >>1655742 >>1655749 There's a lot of good portables available under 400 USD, the aforementioned Portal is just under this price, and it's considered a premium device. I don't know about scammers, but you can't go wrong if you buy directly from Retroid official site: https://www.goretroid.com/collections/retro-game-system In that regard, I recommend the Retroid 5 or the RP Mini, which can both play up to PS2 games. If you really want to save money, there's a lot of cheap Anbernic devices that can play up to Dreamcast games, like the RG35XXSP. I also heard good things on the Trimui Brick and the Trimui Smart, but I believe you have to buy then on Aliexpress, so read the reviews before buying
>>1655749 >>1655765 I can forego N64 emulation if need be, I got a PC for that. Everything else looks solid, thanks. Maybe I'll look into the Retroid 5, assuming it can run most modern emulators.
>>839658 Phones have turned to such shit. I at least appreciated LG because they'd still experiment and put great DACs in their phones, but now even those fuckers are gone. This keyboard add on thing is either out or coming out for iphone and someone is making a nice looking low profile controller attachment, but the thing is really expensive.
>>1655947 Time really is a flat circle, isn't it?
>>1655772 The Retroid Pocket 5 is great, OLED screen, ergonomic and can run almost anything available to android, including several PS2 games, plus a few Switch games, mostly 2D and indies. Although it comes with android (14 I think) it's also Linux compatible, so you can install it if you have enough patience, but I wouldn't recommend it However, battery life is OK at best, and it can feel a bit small sometimes, but overall it's pretty good. Also, be careful not to drop, because it has a glass front finish
>>1655947 >but the thing is really expensive. 150 bucks is definitely too much, i wonder if its because of that old cunt who usurped the kids project
well i got rg40xx h but almost sold it immedietly. I loved it, but i just thought about how i got everything on phone and how i probably wouldn't carry it around. Still it was neat to hold it and trying it out. Next i save up for one of the new dual screen devices. Or maybe get DNA duo screen, if he ever releases it
Has anyone managed to get Shift-JIS games working on the steam deck? I had it working on my computer using env LOCPATH=$HOME/.wine/locale-ja/ LANG=ja_JP.SJIS wine Game.exe. But the steam deck doesn't have ja_JP.SJIS in /etc/locale.gen. So I decided to copy the generated files from my PC but it didn't work either. I used this tutorial for my PC: https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=28978

>>1085645 >The Switch 2 being shit doesn't make the Steam Deck good. K. still infinitely better, support, community, price, and performance than shitch 2
>>1711864 I figured it out thanks to this guide. You just put HOST_LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command% in the launch options. In fact, you don't need to make a SJIS locale on PC either, you can run the games using LANG=ja_JP.UTF8 wine Game.exe. The rest of the guide is unnecessary since Steam OS now comes with many locales. https://gist.github.com/cfillion/4394c3b8cd051fb45721187053e92296?permalink_comment_id=4429775#problem-2
Honestly i'm kinda tempted by the Thor, but i might not use it as i'm mostly at home and don't want to carry it to work, if i ever land a job as they are usually labor intensive or the environment is bad for electric devices for the long run. Still i'm also hoping that one day, randomly i will run into a New 3DS XL on a flee market at a stupidly low price compared to everyone selling it at ebay prices.
>>1718056 get a 3ds from japan instead, the prices are more reasonable there
>>1751915 any site i could order it from japan or something? On ebay the japan versions usually go between 200-300 dollar with yellowed screens, sometimes button not working or plastic a bit worn down so at that point i would just double the money and go for AYN thor. I really i only want to pay 50-100 dollar for a n3dsxl which i know is unrealistic, but hell i don't feel like paying more for a 10 years old tech
I saw on banggood that R46s is now 36 dollar. Looks kinda interesting, but seems like the build quality is shit?
