Metaphor: ReFantazio thread 9 months later Anonymous 07/16/2025 (Wed) 22:02:02 Id: d63346 No. 1568796
Metaphor: ReFantazio has sold 2 million worldwide after 9 months.... https://archive.ph/mOHaw Now 2 million isn't bad I think most devs would, be very happy getting 2 million copies sold worldwide. But for an Altus game especially by the Katsura Hashino this is rather low. I'm gonna list why this game underwhelmed while being a technical success. >Game was rushed Due to being in a development for nearly a decade the game was clearly rushed in a lot of aspects. >Six months was not nearly enough time for a story of this type It needed a year as by the last parts of the game the plot is very rushed >Companion arcs Fell gutted and rushed. >Partial romance They made a system that pleased neither the waifu fags or anti waifu fags just a awkward half assed in-between. >No real customisation of character gear or appearances Like you just did skins and the same shit as P5 for gear. >Archetypes are just Personas with a little bit more customisation Yes it has much needed quality of life compared to the past games, but it's just more of the same. >People are waiting for the full version Because let's be real that's where the full game is.
MC is brown and there's pro DEI shit in it If I wanted to deal with that I can do so and get paid for the time by being at work.
Dogshit shovelware.
>>1568796 >Companions Decently written companions with only one or two with okay resolutions to their companion stories. Strohl I think is one of them. Hulkenberg though got utterly fucked. And not to mention Gallica got no story at all, despite being the closest (and first) companion. >Archetypes Archetypes are poorly handled too. Lower level archetypes are all around bad, but shit doesn't really carry over to the next level of archetype? >Full version It was pretty jarring having a well paced 2/3rds of the game, getting past when the archbishop being fucking dead, Rella double heel turn, Louis's death fakeout and then suddenly new content takes a nosedive (at most it's all fucking rehashes.) And with all the ancient civilization shit I thought that'd matter a bit more than just really being background lore. A lot of elements were handled well, but unfinished it is. Ultimately, I liked it but I can see why it struggled. Why purchase it when the devs rushed out a mess and will re-release a more finish build later? It's fucking early access, but you get to buy it twice. At least the fairy is cute.
>>1568976 I didn't hate what I played but it's rushed as fuck.
I don't think it's that low, I think it's probably fine if not good. You're forgetting it's a completely new IP and that Persona 5 was a landmark title for Atlus in terms or sales, bigger than any previous title for them afaik.
>>1568895 The bigger problem is that the game is just ugly to look at. Not just the fidelity but the art style, especially for the environments.
Would've considered buying it if it wasn't for the DRM, glad I didn't due to not liking how social links are hard tied to character progression. Think that's a dumb way to do it and basically makes them mandatory, since the social link bullshit is the biggest reason I don't like Persona. Also don't like all the in your face point-and-soyjak tier references like the Eht-ra/Etrian Odyssey section, even down to ripping Yuzo Koshiro's compositions without crediting him at all. Yeah I know ATLUS/SEGA owns the rights to the song technically but you usually credit the original composer with things like this. Didn't they also say they """sold""" two million a week after launch but most of it was actually shipped copies, not sold copies?
>>1570162 The other criticisms OP had are fair but the sales of this game are objectively good for an Atlus game. SMTV hasn't even cracked 2mil. Metaphor sold better than most Atlus titles, it's only done worse than Persona.
>>1585514 Sucks that we're never going to see the persona 1 or 2 characters ever again.... Those games were my favorite
>>1585514 >it's only done worse than Persona Sold worse than SMT V too.
Y'know, I missed a bunch of discussion when it first dropped but everytime someone brings this game up it's all critique and negative comparisons to SMT/Persona. What did this game actually do positively compared to those two/adjacent RPG titles? If nothing, then why does the name keep getting dropped everywhere as a mainstream title and get touted as a success? It can't just be "it was the one big game of the month because muh Atlus", right?
>>1586050 It was made the Persona devs so people compare it to Persona. It was made by Atlus so people compare it to other Atlus games. It's not that complicated. >What did this game actually do positively compared to those two/adjacent RPG titles It is basically Persona in a fantasy setting since it has the same calendar management style of moment to moment gameplay and a similar loop. It uses press turn instead of one more in combat. Instead of demon hunting, it's just a job system.
I'd rather have them make new IPs like this then dragging their existing ones like SMT into the mud but Metaphor could've used a much better structure than the social link system.
>>1568796 >>Partial romance >They made a system that pleased neither the waifu fags or anti waifu fags just a awkward half assed in-between. Why do they keep doing this anyway. This "awkward half assed in-between" reminds me of some of their latest games. SMTIVA? SMT with awkward traces of Persona in the story and character department. SH2? Awkward SMT-Persona mix that no one liked due to how bland and poorly executed it was. TMS? Awkward FE game with SMT systems tacked in.
>>1589775 Their studio got to big that people start aguing how the game should be made, many such cases
>>1585976 No it didn't.
>>1590064 Yes it did. Metaphor only just now crossed 2 mil.
>>1590634 How did Metaphor sell worse then SMTV if it took SMTV over 2 years to reach 2 million but only 9 months for Metaphor to reach 2 million?
>>1586050 >What did this game actually do positively compared to those two/adjacent RPG titles Not about Japanese high school students. Not set reality. Did not reuse the same fucking enemies that Persona and SMT share. The bosses based on weird art were legit cool to look at and fight.
>>1590712 Because SMT V was locked in Switch jail during that time. Metaphor had a global launch.
>>1590854 >switch jail If anything that probably helped its overall sales. Also, V had a definitive edition which was also a boost and its still not even really ahead of Metaphor.
>>1590886 Speaking of the V boost, Imagine the numbers an enhanced edition of Metaphore would pull?
>>1590960 I don't think it would pull big numbers. SMTV was received pretty well by series fans as far as I could tell, but Metaphor doesn't seem to have a fanbase or lasting cultural impact, at least not on the scale its sales would indicate. I don't imagine it getting as many sales as a consequence unless this definitive edition actually "fixes the game" and ends up having larger long-term sales. >>1586240 It's not an entirely new IP. It's one big nostalgia tour for existing Atlus IPs and the director was very open about that in interviews. One of the big reasons my desire to try the game soured after launch.
