RTS/Strategy thread Anonymous 08/13/2025 (Wed) 03:18:15 Id: 048226 No. 1652839
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Edition The last thread is auto saging and Dawn of War: Definitive Edition comes out in two days so I thought I'd make a new thread. They've released a dev diary on the changes made. Obvious ones are x64 bit engine but also all the campaigns are unified now. The mod menu still exists and from the Unification Discord, they are hoping to move the mod to this new edition in two weeks or so. No word on Ultimate Apocalypse yet.
>>1652839 Also relic listened to the community and re-released the trailer with the original audio. That AAAAAAAHHHHHHH is iconic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HiUectTy9Y
>>1652839 If Relic drop the ball again on what should be an easy win, I'm done with them. If it does go well, I'm curious what other minor fixes might find their way into this. >they are hoping to move the mod to this new edition in two weeks or so I hope it actually improves things. I'm hesitantly hopeful to an extent. >>1652840 >AAAAAAAHHHHHHH is iconic Sly Marbo sounds in the distance. Seriously though, there are a good amount of voice lines I would say classify as iconic in the DoW games. Although given the quality of the voice acting and dialogue lines, I'm not that surprised.
(48.91 KB 340x390 it's magical.webm)

>>1652839 They also intend to maintain mod versions for both OG and Definitive Edition.

Has anyone seen the steam reviews for Broken Arrow? Devs released a 1.0.9 patch for the game the other day and it's only a balance patch that took a month. For a heavily multiplayer focused game like this, there's no surrender option, there's not option to stop people from leaving which tanks your ELO, they're still banning people cheat in single player skirmishes and no replay function when you lose a map. Also still no saves in singleplayer. It's... comedic at this point. As you can see, the community heavily bombed the game because this is not what they wanted.
>>1654821 It really is a shame when devs put out games that clearly needed far more time in development. >>1652839 Less than an hour before it opens up for sale. I will be watching the reviews to see how this goes.
Reminder singleplayer RTS is best RTS. Gookclick get the fuck out.
>>1656446 Unification devs posted pic related on their shitscord. Now some random bits from the reviews I've read: >most mods need updates to work with DE so expect to wait a bit for them (although some players reported getting some mods working now) >skirmish is limited to Soulstorm so you can't play skirmish using the older games if you disliked Soulstorm changes/additions >upscaled shit + new models generally look better with a few exceptions >unit icons look bad >new camera and zoom level is an improvement but some think it doesn't go far enough >discounted to $18 if you owned the old version on steam, but $30 if you don't which has some people upset about the pricing >discount only lasts until the 28th of this month >pathfinding is improved >not much new content beyond the visual update and some smaller fixes + QoL stuff >cursor drift issues >minor stutter issues >fps issues (disabling vsync and shadows seems to fix it for some) >crashing for some people, runs flawlessly for others >multiplayer lobby features lacking and seems to have more frequent crashing issues in multiplayer >older performance issues/bugs still exist but some are saying performance is improved for them (compared to the old games) so I'm seeing conflicting reports >some fags want achievements for the campaigns as it is currently lacking
I was very hyped for d.o.r.f., but what the fuck are these new 3D sprites? Why did they had to ruin it? The gameplay still looks great, but I feel very let down.
>>1656956 Was that the Command and Conquer-esque game they announced at Summer Gays Fest two years ago? I remember being a bit interested in it, then forgot the name.
>>1656994 >Summer Gays Fest I have no idea what that is. >>1656956 What's the problem with them? They seem to fit in, and they obviously were going for big vehicles with TS/RA2 aesthetics. They even used the construction sfx from TS. And it's probably nostalgia, but I love the 3D block bars.
>>1656994 Tempest Rising?
>>1652839 Played for a little bit. >Units seem balanced around Soulstorm expansion. >But you can't use flying units when in Dark Crusade. >Sometimes mechs or units will get stuck for some reason. Attack move works most of the time. >All the voice lines are still there, graphics have been beefed up so reflective surfaces like the golden aquila or a guardsman bayonet stand out more. >Sometime projectiles like rockets miss for some reason. I think this bug existed in the original game. Might be a hardware thing. >Game didn't crash or have graphical bugs. All in all, a solid remaster. Just gonna wait for Unification now.
>>1657480 >Units seem balanced around Soulstorm expansion Skirmish is built off Soulstorm's skirmish mode. Not shocked if they used that as a baseline for everything else. >I think this bug existed in the original game It did. >Game didn't crash or have graphical bugs Good to hear. If you get a chance, try the multiplayer as I read it crashes more often and I wanted someone to confirm that for me. >All in all, a solid remaster Assuming it sells well enough, I wonder if Relic will support it with expansions again similar to how Age of Empires 2 DE is still getting content.

>>1652839 I'm not mad about DE. The fact that it supports x64 does make it worth it for me, especially since it cost me around $5, as I already owned all the games. Although I do have to say a bit lazy, they didn't retouch the models. Eagerly waiting for the mods to do the transition, Really want to play UA without all the crashing. Also, how do you add new flags and badges to the new version? Always hated the base color schemes. I have a ton of those if anyone is interested.

Dawn of War 4 just got announced at Gamescom Made by King Art Games (The Dwarves and Iron Harvest) and being published by Deep Silver. The game looks alright, the marketing material looks like soy infused anal sewage completely missing any kind of grimdark vibe to it. Some gameplay features >AdMech, Space Marines, Orks and Nekrons as base factions >Base building and all that entails including bunkers and defensive positions >Cover system from CoH/DoW2 none of that bubble cancer from 3 >Resources and Points consist of Requisition and Power >Singular Popcap that goes up to 300 >All units fight in melee with sync animations and if they're not tanky they will drop super fast >Decals on terrain from basic gunfire alone along with some destructible environment >Vehicles and buildings are way bigger and closer to scale than previous games It looks alright, I hope it's fun and that the Krauts at Kings Art can deliver. 40K might as well be dead though, holy shit, that marketing is ass. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2272360/Warhammer_40000_Dawn_of_War_IV/
>>1675557 Forgot to add 3vs3 max in skirmish/multiplayer and around 70 Campaign missions.
>>1675557 >Deep Silver RUINED
>>1675557 >Total War/Hammer-style UI If they're really going to this route, INCREASE THE SCALE OF THE BATTLEFIELD! That's what fans of Ultimate Apocalypse and Unification of DOW1 and Codex Edition did with DOW2. MORE UNITS! BIGGER BATTLEFIELDS! NONE OF THAT ASSFAGGOTS MOBA SHIT FROM DOW3!
(5.94 KB 180x149 Sobconcern.jpg)

>>1675557 >Made by the Iron Harvest devs. Oh no... Iron Harvest was kinda clunky once you started using multiple mechs and units on the field. This makes me think they're going to have the same problem as Broken Arrow and Terminator Defiance where Infantry start of as a decent unit but then get shredded if not in cover. That kinda gameplay was like CoH 2 and was not fun.

>>1652839 update with open-source changes based on TheSuperHackers build could get somethings with deepseek's help, mostly under tentative changes in Articles https://www.nexusmods.com/cncgenerals/mods/1094
>>1695257 Just tried it. Pretty good so far even if I am pretty rusty. Only minor complaints were to do with some visual/animation bugs. The one major complaint I had would do with the fact it crashes somewhat frequently. About 1 in 3 or 4 games will crash.
>>1675725 CoH did it as well and it's fun Pressing reinforce constantly isn't a fun mechanic either, it gets fucking insane when playing IG in the original game as well. >>1695257 >>1708926 Any word on fixing the game logic to get 60 FPS?
>>1708972 >it gets fucking insane when playing IG in the original game as well Yeah watching your guardsmen pile eat an AoE nuke of some kind is always tiring when you know you have to go and spam replace their numbers and weapons again. I tended to be more conservative with them due to wanting to avoid that which really doesn't match the intended playstyle. >Any word on fixing the game logic to get 60 FPS? I stopped playing Generals a while ago so no idea as I haven't kept up to date. I'll have to go look through the modder shitscords later to see how it is coming along or if any have mentioned it.

Editing this thread since OP was a bit shallow Recent news: >Civilization 7's latest update brings a sweeping balance pass and a broadside of naval mechanics, while Firaxis offers Blackbeard for free as a 'special thanks' to players https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc-uCfUzTvs >Real-Time Strategy Game Homeworld: Vast Reaches Heads For SteamVR Soon <Developed by FarBridge, Homeworld: Vast Reaches takes place between the events of Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2, setting adventurous astronauts on a fresh journey within the series’ universe. You play as Tyrra Soban, a new Fleet Commander, guided by Karan S’jet as they tackle an unknown evil. Originally launched on Quest last year, it's making its debut on SteamVR on October 23. https://www.uploadvr.com/homeworld-vast-reaches-pc-vr-release-date/ >Anno 117: Pax Romana releases on November 13th of this year by Ubisoft Honestly, I'm kinda surprised Ubisoft releases these types of games since I always thought they were focused on DEI experiments and Asscreed clones, but here we are. I wish I could edit in more, but I don't know too much about the genre. Other than that Brutal Legend was really shitty about it, and that I should give Dawn of War a try.

To that one Anon who said Broken Arrow would get better. 5 months after launch they've finally implemented an Anti Cheat system. That being Easy Anti Cheat. 'A system so easy to bypass and so horribly implemented that you have to use a separate launcher for it now. This somehow still results in achievements resetting or just being banned again by their second layer of AC. It's almost comical just how bad the devs here are.
>>1910231 Added some stuff to your op, honestly you should've beefed up your OP with that post, but what's done is done.

FACT: Singleplayer RTS is king. FACT: 80% of Warcraft III's playerbase never touched Battle.net. FACT: The majority of PvPtists moved onto MOBAs over fifteen years ago. FACT: Many of the best selling RTS of the last ten years haven't even fucking HAD an online component; e.g Empires of the Undergrowth and They Are Billions. The genre's incredible flame out was a result of the industry trying to capture the gookclick esports base that simply did not exist. They're still making this mistake, Stormgate launched a few weeks ago and was a colossal flop. It's a competitive F2P RTS, something that has no audience. The industry, both devs and suits, have somehow gaslight themselves into thinking this is a market that exists, that this is what RTS fans want.
>>1910287 It's the same with Arena shooters

Anybody play Beyond All Reason ? I tried to get into it but it's just too much for me and the solo missions don't tell you anything. I learned on my own that the TT is locked behind contruction bots but everything else like revive or scrapping (etc) but I only learned the basic blu version and it's got a whole different one for the red team (if the website is telling the truth) I've personally played Diplomacy is not an Option (both the full game and the prequel demo) and I want something else to scratch that medieval city builder-RTS mix so I'm tempted to buy Becastled or Cataclismo but neither seem as good as DinaO. I'd also like any opinions on the 8 (and 9) bit RTS games by Petroglyph (the guys who made C&C Remastered collection ) I've played Mindustry most of the way to completetion (on V7 & V8) and played a lot mods but I'm looking for a website to download Erekir based map for the base game Speaking of mobile games you guys should try Lego Battles if you have a DS emulator. >>1915315 Those new Custodes units are tanky. Think Grey Knights vanilla playstyle for the melee or a default SM squad for the ranged and them beef their stats up to that of Terminators. Played a match against the Harelquins and their bullshit. They somehow survived. When I got to the main men, I kid you not, there was a Gachimachi remix of the Force Commander theme playing. ♂ DEEP ♂ DARK ♂ STRIKES ♂ Few more of the new units too, Eldar get Exodite Dinoriders.

>>1915693 Be careful using the settings in the mod manager for DE. It completely bugged out my game and I had to reinstall the mod + verify some files to fix whatever it bugged the hell out. On the bright side, it seems like that crash was a one off as I haven't had anymore since then. Downside is that modes like survival still require me to dumb all my graphics settings down as longer lasting games slowly eat my framerate down to around 20-40 fps. I've got an older gpu though so that is probably a factor too as I saw some with better PCs not reporting any problems.
Getting some crazy fullscreen vertex explosions during the death animations of some vehicle models. Hadn't noticed anything of the sort playing vanilla DE or older Unification versions, so maybe it's not linux related. Could someone try to replicate any of the following: >Renegade Guard (Vraks branch) <Macharius & Hellhound >DKoK (incl. Cathay-Reinforcement Victory Condition) <Centaur & Commissariat Leman Russ <Zhurong Battletank (the big one) & Baifu(?) Assault Troop Carrier (got a big plasma-cannon) Oddly enough the hellhounds of other factions don't show this. All the Sister's flame-vehicles are also clean.
Another victory for the Greater Good
I really wish i could like dawn of war, but it's way too rush reliant and agressive for my taste. i still waiting for a RTS that is slower and more about defense and attrition than just rushing, microing and deathballing. last one that i liked was Rise of Nations. I hope that Dust Front is also more on the slower, methodical side.
>>1920357 Which Dawn of War did you play? Company of Heroes so far has been the most potentially defensive RTS I've ever played, especially 2. A lot of the game is about building your own cover and capitalizing on it with your own infantry and support weapons, and you can easily play very defensive, but at some point you're going to have to go aggressive in order to acquire more territory and get more resources, and it's not as if your enemy doesn't have access to tools that help against hyper-defensive play. Unsure if there exists such a thing as the equivalent of WW1 trench warfare that you might be looking for. At least not in RTS.
>>1920574 CoH1 is way more extreme on defense and attack than CoH2. CoH2 factions downright all play the same, in CoH1, Americans HAVE to be aggressive and Germans HAVE to be defensive or they will lose the game. The DLC factions with Brits and PE are a whole another story since they are completely unbalanced,
>>1920574 I played both 1 and 2, i hate 2, but even 1 is very rush-reliant because it's more important to deny the enemy resources than to actually use them yourself. >>1920630 oh yeah, completely forgot about CoH, i liked the bridge maps a lot on that one. never played the 2nd one because i don't have the DLCs, might try it. thanks anons.
>>1920630 I don't know, CoH2 faction distinction is still very pronounced, at least to me. From main infantry behavior and tactics to non-doctrinal unit availability. I can't say anything about CoH1 because 2 was my first and I only played CoH1 with the blitzkrieg mod, although I'd openly accept that criticism for CoH3 which is unforgivably awful, as they removed a ton of "jankiness" that was subtly part of balance in the name of QoL, like negative cover, vehicle pathfinding and flamer damage in cover. >>1920902 >very rush-reliant because it's more important to deny the enemy resources than to actually use them yourself Kind of... If you play defensively well, you'll incite your opponent to trade badly and then you can slowly strangle him through attrition, although being unable of moving most of your fortified, defensive units makes it really hard to slowly push your influence as you make your opponent bleed, not to mention that your own defensive structures and static weaponry often need some of your unit cap, which means less resources for you to keep expanding anyway. This is perhaps the one thing that I like in CoH3, in that some of the heavier AT guns can be towed by your support trucks, and they can also recrew stuff themselves rather than have you waste a lot of time recrewing your lost stuff. Other than that the game is shit.
>>1921328 Play the CoH1 campaign, vanilla American vs Wehr is also completely different feom anything in CoH2, honestly I even prefer the clusterfuck unbalanced messes that are the British and Panzer Elite over CoH2. Boring as fuck mechanically, besides all the visual and audio downgrades.
>>1652839 Can you customize hotkeys?

>>1989567 Finally a game centered on Brettonnia.
Got the hankering to play WC3 again and what a bitch it is to install the original game after Blizzard fucked everything up with Reforged.
>>1990024 Mind you the game still isn't perfect even with the install Blizzard does provide, and you'll have to run the game in compatibility mode to get cutscenes to play (but then they're all washed out so it's easier to just watch them separately anyway) and I don't think was ever a proper widescreen patch for it but whatever, it's finally working so time to game. The voice acting is way better than I remember.
I just noticed that Elite mod for DoW2 added the Tau. I watched some gameplay and the balance seems to be very much a wip as they were pretty overpowered compared to other factions. Animations and models looked pretty cool apart from some size scaling issues and their super unit needing an animation tweak to its walk cycle as it looks like it is sliding along the ground since it doesn't match its move speed. I'll probably give it a test after they patch/balance it more. >>1990024 Yeah Blizzard fucking sucks.
Dawn of War (1,2,3) + Mechanicus + Space Hulk Deathwing + Iron Harvest - This. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57JPK87V8Eo >>1989409 >>1989567 It will go the way with Thrones of Britannia, Troy, Three Kingdoms and Pharoah, the only people getting it is when it goes free on EGS. >>1990024 Old installer clients here if anyone wants it https://www.hiveworkshop.com/threads/warcraft-3-legacy-installer-1-21b-1-27a.307766/
>>1911409 I am currently playing some BAR whenever I have some time. I dislike that I have to get an account to play multiplayer. I want to host a game for my friends without an account. I wonder what the future mod scene would be for this game, would be super cool.
>>1989409 Even if it was decent, it'd still take more than just rehashing the same mechanics to convince me to play it. Unfortunately, from the look of it, it seems they'd either rehash everything, copy some things from CK/Bannerlord/other, or (again) focus more on the graphics/cinematics.

Sins 2 is in a decent spot. There's a new patch coming out in a few days. And as for mods, there's one called RRR which is an overhaul of vanilla factions with repeatable techs and one that adds the Galactic empire with unified races.
>>1990024 >>1990192 I have recovered from my bitch fit last night and would like to remark that Warcraft 3 still holds up fantastically. Don't want to get off-topic but god World of Warcraft did such a number of the franchise, that period of time right before it became big was such a perfect point for the series. There's like a dozen expansions now, there's time travel and alternate universes and shit, nothing's a mystery anymore and it all sucks dick. Maybe, if I'm being really generous, the series should have ended with WotLC. I despise this perpetual development grind that every franchise in the world has become.
>>1990024 Install from CD
>>1992287 It's been ages since I've played Sins. Do you think I should dig up the complete original game or is Sins 2 an all-around better experience?
