In my experience, most people just stick with what they grew up with. The fact that millions of video games exist in our world today often means there are few reasons to branch out from the most popular games at your point in history (or at least the top picks from the top 20 genres in general). Even with that in mind, I don't think takes like >>1727273 and >>1728408 are necessarily bad. If you haven't really played that many genres or games, I guess one could suggest expanding your palate, but I've personally branched out and played tons of games outside of my comfort zone, and the vast majority of them just weren't fun or even interesting to me. Even then, a lot of them just kinda fell out of the top 10 and would show up somewhere between 11-30.
