DOOM Anonymous 11/16/2025 (Sun) 17:30:14 Id: 6a7c62 No. 1938751
Was playing Doom 3 and I have thoughts on it. Would post in one of the other threads but one is for classic doom and the other is for nu-doom. What do you even call doom 3? Middle child doom? I played the game because I was too scared of it as a kid to fight the first enemy and I wanted to say I have beaten it. I think the game was overall pretty alright. Like a 6/10 or maybe a 7 but nothing more. There is actually a lot of things Doom 3 does that I love but it doesn't really come together into anything great. I love the interactivity, I like the aesthetic. I like most of the weapons. I think its funny that they named the bad guy "Betruger" while taking itself 100% seriously. I dont like the shotgun. Everyone and their mom has already complained about the spread. I think I understand why it is like it is, I suspect that because of how few fights were at more than 5 meters away they couldn't make the shotgun anymore accurate. If they made it even just a bit more accurate it would be the ideal choice for like 80% of the game. Out of all of my deaths playing the game I want to say 50% were because of falling. 40% because of an exploding barrel and the last 10% the actual enemies. Even then I had one random enemy hitting me once making me go from 70 to -40. I am almost sure that was a glitch. The way that enemies in this game just slaps you 2 meters away is so fucking annoying. I understand some creatures doing that but why does a floating head biting me send me flying? I also noticed there is only 1 woman in this game. for the first few hours I thought this game might be completely woman free until one appeared in a cutscene and became a floating head. Does the soul cube count as a woman? I almost thought about making a thread asking you anons if there even was such a thing as a woman free game. It was fun at first but the more the game went on the more annoying it got with barons of hell being big bullet sponges and the game still doing the stupid trick of hiding a ready to leap imp behind doors. Or just teleporting in enemies right up your ass that slap you once and make you completely lose your aim. You know in retrospect its really easy to see just why this game was essentially ignored compared to I & II. I dont think I have heard anything doom 3 mods and I wonder why. Was the game harder to mod? Did people just not care to mod it? Was the previous games just more popular? Should I even bother playing resurrection of evil?

>>1938751 If you're not too burned out, Ressurection of Evil is alright, improves upon the gameplay and doesn't overstay it's welcome, though it overuses two enemy types like Doom 3 overuses Imps and Mites. >I love the interactivity, I like the aesthetic. That's all Doom 3 has going for it unfortunately, plus being polished and mostly bug free. Something like it with better enemy diversity, some open ended levels and an inventory system would be top tier. As a matter of fact you should play the System Shock games, it really feels like Doom 3 wanted to go the System Shock route but the tech just wasn't there yet.
>>1938751 Honestly, it's not that bad. It's not proper DOOM, but almost nothing has been for a very long time. I'd rank it juuust below nu-DOOM, but well above Eternal and Dark Ages. It's also really good in VR - and I don't mean the shitty PSVR port, but the proper two handed tracking where you hold the flashlight in your left hand and have your gun in the right hand.
Doom 3 will be my first Doom because FUCK YOU NOSTALGIA BOOMERS.

We already have a DOOM thread but I won't oppose this Reminder that >>>/humanoid/231 exists, though the D3 girls don't get much love.
>>1939147 Did any of the D3 demons get any love? I haven't seen any. >>1939097 Not the best introduction but sure go on.
Shame Dark Ages didn't work out.
>>1941749 Doom Eternal only worked out because it was released during the lockdowns. The average normalfag who bought it completely forgot all about it.
Also the character referenced on that magazine cover. I thought it was from unreal tournament but searching for "unreal tournament huntress" doesn't give me what I want. Then I thought it was the simon bisley character but she doesn't look the same either. maybe its just a Fakk2 reference? I wish I knew.

>>1942374 >unreal tournament huntress
>>1942379 Yeah I thought her name was huntress.
>>1942381 Anon... she's from Quake 3...
(95.97 KB 1280x720 huntress2.jpg)

>>1942387 Oh. That is why I couldn't find her. I have no idea why I thought she was from UT.

>>1941775 I think the average normalfag just didn't know how to play the game, and were constantly ammo starved which stressed them out - and that left a bad taste in their mouths for Doom Eternal. Granted, I only got this from a sample of one normalfag I know who told me that was his reason for ignoring DA. And I guess myself as well - so make that two. I didn't have any problems beating the game and playing it how the designers intended, but it just didn't feel like anything that resembled DOOM to me. That fucking grappling hook too, and the expanded DoomGuy lore with the Makyrs and all that bullshit... It just doesn't feel right and I'm fucking done. I'd probably be a lot more charitable to the game if it was just it's own game instead of carrying the DOOM banner.
>>1942413 It's a terribly mediocre game with awful design, Halofags being the biggest dedense force of the game should be telling.
>>1942399 Quake 3 has Crash, and Huntress. Unreal tournament had a lot of female characters and nude models to but none were as popular as Huntress with the possible exception of that topless model made to look like a pornstar.
>>1938751 Doom 3 was the weird black sheep of the series. It was an entry were it moved away from the fast-pace, aggressive combat of the first two games to a claustrophobic, action-horror game. I'm not sure what was Id thinking of that time, probably to show off Id Tech 4's lighting and shadow rendering technology to demonstrate how creepy 3D games can be. Although I don't necessarily think that its a bad game, the ambiance and aesthetic really worked for what it was intended. I remember how scared I was when I was walking through a dark area thinking that an Imp might jump at me since I was using the flashlight and had to quickly switch to the shotgun. >I dont like the shotgun. Everyone and their mom has already complained about the spread. Most people didn't like the shotgun, the best way to use it if you get really close to the demons that you cann one-shot an imp. The Super Shotgun makes thing better. >Should I even bother playing resurrection of evil? If you want to know the fate of Bretruger after he became a demon, yes.
>>1942566 They couldn't really have several enemies and big open areas with the lighting engine. It just wasn't feasible for computers at the time to run it. So we got a linear action horror game.
>>1942588 Given how Quake 4 later handled its large open spaces (ie, "poorly"), id handled the limitations in a very elegant way.
>>1942606 Quake 4 had good open spaces when on foot, you're thinking of the shitty vehicle sections.
(95.04 KB 540x540 ULTRA VIOLENT.jpg)

>>1942588 You also have to remember at that time they had to hit a benchmark for the xbox releases as well, I remember Doom 3 mostly for being one of the first indicators of just how badly consolization would come to affect video games. Not to say the PC hardware landscape didn't also play a part in throwing it off, if I remember correctly one of the main modelers for Doom 3 had to model things in very small zoomed in patches because his personal work computer couldn't handle the entire model without crashing whatever program he was using, which I'm sure also factored into how Carmack just didn't bother trying to persue further optimization to make intense action/speed more functional under the id tech 4 engine. Also at the time there was an undecided pathway when it came to the future of CPU development with no direct commitment to single-core and mult-core designs which definitely influenced the development of ID tech 4 as until the late 2000's the majority of multi-core setups ran games using the engine like hot shit which was probably due to the single-core focus and real-time lighting not playing nice with the smaller duo and quad core caches It feels more like the slow horror nature of Doom 3 was more of a concession than a vision, which they did lean into very well with some very nice designs and visuals but as a result Doom 3 was the second nail in the coffin for ID no longer really being a trend-setter for the FPS genre.
>>1942566 Doom 3 came about during the early 2000s, a weird time in gaming where graphics and TECHNOLOGY were the only thing people cared about. Don't forget Deus Ex 2 also sold and reviewed well just because it looked prettier (to people in 2003) than DX.
>>1942743 I wouldn't call it weird, fully 3D gaming was still relatively new and the jump from 5th to 6th gen was fucking unreal.
>>1942892 As big as the jump from the 4th to 5th gen.
>>1942904 Not that big We went from Starfox to Twisted Metal in 2 years, and most games were still 2D sprite based.
lol
>>1942556 >with the possible exception of that topless model made to look like a pornstar. Which one was that?
>>1945081 I would count it as just a game where I cannot see or hear a woman. If a woman worked on the game it doesn't matter. I am looking at the game not at the devs making it.

>>1938751 >I dont think I have heard anything doom 3 mods
>>1945129 The only good thing about that mod is the improved weapons and the enemies being more aggressive and having different attacks. The rest of the mod outside of fighting demons is absolute fucking cringe of the highest caliber that completely shatters the pacing of the mod. Why the fuck they thought having walking sim sections would be a good idea is beyond me. DOOM 3 itself once it gets going, stays going till the end. This mod constantly stops and starts and just when you are in the zone it leashes you back out to do another walking sim section. It is beyond jarring.
>>1945176 but muh story
>>1942556 >with the possible exception of that topless model made to look like a pornstar. >>1943086 Asia Carrera? Alana Evans? There were a couple of porn stars who tried to expand their porno careers to sweaty gamers by playing Unreal Tournament - and I think Asia even got her own custom model, but I don't recall it being topless.
