Game Journals Thread Anonymous 05/27/2025 (Tue) 11:23:49 No. 27955
Now that the refugee crisis is over we can start this up again. The thread's theme is simple: Play your game and post about it as you progress! I've picked up Sonic Unleashed's PC port again. There are long segments where it's multiple night stages in a row and you don't get to play any day stages. I definitely can see how this would've been an absolute pain without the fast loading times, 60 FPS and other fixes they've made.
Been playing through Shadows over Loathing. Not too different from West of Loathing, which isn't a bad thing I suppose. Very enjoyable game. Feels like a throwback to like 2009.
>>29364 I haven't kept up with that game in years. How recent is this? I knew about the west of loathing but not this one. I like that they kept the same PHP/HTML interface they had in the game, going by the screenshots.
>>29368 It came out in 2022, so pretty recently. Interface is exactly the same as west/kingdom. Like I said it really feels like a throwback. Has that 2000s style humour as well. Made my guy a cheese wizard. I go around summoning stinky cheese to ward off horrors from beyond the stars.
Trying to get the true ending in Ember Knights for switch, which you have to beat the game with 15 difficulty multipliers.

I raced 4 hours of Nurburgring for some old car Next up is 24 hours of Nurburgring
(4.27 MB 798x448 gt4.mp4)

Somehow I only just realized that if you do nothing in B-spec mode, the cars will pit themselves automatically without me needing to do anything, fucking hell, I guess I'll just leave this running overnight then
>>29482 The lighting and colors are really good here. For a split second at the start I thought this was recorded footage. If you compressed it enough I think it would take me at least a few seconds to realize that. >B-spec mode Do they do anything special besides the pitstop?
Playan Apollo Justice Collection since I havent touch AA series since AJ came out back in the DS. Just started 5-3 Really defending the same little shit again? How odd there wasn't a Hobo Phoenix costume. According to a Reddit thread is just a convincing picture and not a whole model.

I finished 24 hours of Nurburgring and unlocked an F1 car, which is basically the hax car which lets you stomp all the other races. I am reluctant to use it to cheese the final main championship though, I might instead do a few more other championships and see if I can unlock or buy a hypercar somehow. The hypercars are surprisingly competitive on straights but they get stomped by the F1 car in corners. >>29483 >The lighting and colors are really good here Yeah Gran Turismo 4 was mind blowing at the time when it released. I remember when I was a kid and I first played GT3 at my cousin's house and people were saying how it looked like it was real life. >Do they do anything special besides the pitstop? Not much. All I know is that B-spec is a bit better with tires compared to me, but worse with fuel. The ability of the B-spec is tied to how many points you have won from racing, which is a really cool system. You have to do a lot of racing yourself before B-spec becomes decent. At this point, B-spec can race about 10 seconds faster than me on Nurburgring.

Finished Silent Hill 3. The final boss fight on hard mode takes 25 minutes. Possibly the hardest boss I have ever fought. Overall it was a good game, on the same level as the first 2
(265.27 KB 1280x720 soma.jpg)

Just finished Soma. It wasn't that great.
>>29947 That's a nice hole you've got there.

>>29947 If you've read literally any philosophy on consciousness the game is embarrassingly sophomoric and shallow. Beyond that, it's a walking sim where people talk at you for the whole game. Also the MC is frustratingly stupid and never grasps the extremely basic concepts. The AI trying to keep everybody alive in that freaky stasis was cool though. Effective body horror by an AI, but out a genuine attempt at keeping its crew alive. And I think that's where the game really excels, everybody praises its entry-level philosophy but the body horror and mass reproductions of people's consciousness is the game's best aspect. The WAU isn't a monster, it was just poorly thought out and doing its best interpretation of what it was asked. This image is the best thing to come out of SOMA. This is so fucking sad I want to hug that robot >>29954 Called sphincters in the concept art.
>>29956 >If you've read literally any philosophy on consciousness the game is embarrassingly sophomoric and shallow. Beyond that, it's a walking sim where people talk at you for the whole game. Also the MC is frustratingly stupid and never grasps the extremely basic concepts. Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Philosophically-shallow walking simulator, it upsets me that so many people gave it a perfect score and thought it was some deep experience. There was like 30 minutes of actual game. Credit where it's due: The atmosphere was brilliant.
(161.65 KB 1202x676 crispy loli.jpg)

I finished Silent Hill 4. It was breddy good actually, the second half is better than the first half. Now onto Silent Hill Origins and that's probably the last Silent Hill I'm interested in except PT and of course Silent Hill F
(2.70 MB 1280x720 valkyria.mp4)

Replaying Valkyria Chronicles. It's a solid TRPG with a lot of interesting mechanics. I haven't played many other TRPGs so I don't know where it stands compared to the others
(187.57 KB 1416x904 floating loli.jpg)

Finished Silent Hill Origins. It wasn't bad even though Team Silent didn't make it. The engine was well done and felt like a classic Silent Hill game. The PS2 port had shit controls though and the plot was a bit on the shallow side. Also no fucking difficulty setting what the fuck. Game was too easy, I killed the final 2 bosses in like a minute each just unloading an AK into them. Still I did enjoy it Next I shall play Silent Hill F
Finished the Lawyer game Part 6 Case 5. I thought the game was more about Phoenix but the final case was all Apollo's. Crazy ass final boss. Still have the extra case to complete. It seems AAI also has a collection available, but heard it differs from fan translation.
(3.01 MB 1280x720 shf.mp4)

Finished Silent Hill f. It was actually alright, I enjoyed ryukishi's writing. It also seems to change some of the dialogue on the second playthrough which I thought was breddy cool
>>30205 How'd you like it? I hate AA4's continuity and I especially hate AA5 as a whole (minus the orca case) but I feel like AA6 was genuinely really good.
>>28649 Is this Unleashed? That model looks really good.

Just started LttP on my journey to play all Zelda games. I have finished Zelda 1 and 2, plus OOT and MM. I'm gonna finish LttP and then replay OOT and MM before moving onto the later games. I'm enjoying LttP more than I thought I would. Graphics are pretty comfy and unlike the previous 2 games, it seems you can actually play it without a guide and save states.
>>30640 I preferred AA5 over AA6 to be honest. Too much clapbait over Maya, Kurain mysticism and whatever didn't really caught me and it's bonus case wasn't really anything special. Rayfa is cute tho. And 6-3 resolution was really hard tho
>>30700 >needing a guide and save states to beat Zelda 1 and 2 Filthy casual. To 100% them would be pretty hard without a guide, at least the first one, but then the point wasn't to 100% that game on your first go. You explore, you find some extras. But there are clues to get you all the "secrets" you need to find the end of the game. Zelda II has Death Mountain and people complain about it being too confusing, but the route is literally the first route my autistic brain would naturally go for (just always choose the rightmost path that isn't the one you came out of). And it's hard, but perfectly doable without save states. You just have to practice each enemy type. The knight enemies seem hard at first, but you learn to deal with them quickly, if you actually bother to learn. After Link to the Past, don't ignore Link's Awakening. It's the next game in the series. I suppose you could just skip to the DX version, which has all the content from the original, plus some extra. Never played the Switch version since it's lacking some stuff from the DX version. After Link's Awakening, look into Ancient Stone Tablets. It's for Satellaview, but people have recreated it so you can run it in an emulator. It's the direct sequel to Link to the Past, but with better sound, including voice acting, and time mechanics which feel like the predecessor to Majora's Mask. Plus it inherently only takes a maximum of a few hours to beat, so just do it. Actually Ancient Stone Tablets is the third BS (Broadcast Satellaview) Zelda game. The first two are based on Zelda I, though, not Link to the Past. They've been called "Third Quest" and "Fourth Quest," but that isn't 100% accurate. The overworld is slightly changed (smaller) and there is a very light new story, plus the new graphics and the time mechanics. But if you're casual enough to almost skip Link's Awakening, I know I'll never convince you to bother with BS Zelda, even though it's cool. But Ancient Stone Tablets is the closest these come to being almost a whole new game, so I recommend that one hardest.
>>30700 AlttP is easily my favorite Zelda game. It just struck a perfect balance where it isn't disrupting with its storytelling (a big issue with later Zelda games) and the puzzle solving and world exploration aren't super handholdy but neither "buy Nintendo Power lol" levels of bullshit like in Zelda 1.
>>30710 The point was to waste your time and artificially increase playtime while disguising the game's lack of content and encouraging the purchase of external resources like game magazines. It's similar to Dragon Quest 1 where if they removed the grinding the game would have been super short, and just like turn-based RPGs, Zelda games became significantly better from the fourth generation onwards.
>>30713 What parts did you even get stuck at? Burning the bush that blatantly blocks a pathway and begs you to burn it? Going "Up, Up, Up the mountain" like one of the old ladies tells you to do? Zelda I really isn't that hard to figure out unless you're going for 100%, in which case there are a couple of pretty hard secret rooms to find (like a bush just south of Lake Hylia which I'm pretty sure doesn't have any clues). But of course that's 100%, and you aren't expected to do that unless you're a total autist. The hardest thing about Zelda I is just that the final dungeon is extremely long and difficult, which does fit the final dungeon. Also, I hate that when you die you respawn with only three hearts, but I think that's just an oversight, not a way to pad the game. At least you can get a fairy and not have to grind like in Metroid. Zelda II really just asks you to learn how to play. There are light RPG mechanics, so you can argue that is done to extend playtime, since you could grind to make things easier if you suck, but you really shouldn't have to. (Also it becomes very easy to grind once you get to East Hyrule.) Death Mountain doesn't have any clues that I know of, but maybe I just didn't look very hard since the path is the simplest path possible. If you play video games and are used to going to the right, then you'll find the path on your first try. I know people also complain about that guy that lives in the woods, but there's a clue about where he is, so I don't think it's very hard. The actual action can get pretty hard, but no worse than games like Castlevania. There are plenty of popular NES games which I think have harder action, like Ninja Gaiden, or Castlevania III, and I love those games too. And speaking of Castlevania, the only really bullshit part of Simon's Quest is that part where you're supposed to kneel next to a wall while holding a certain jewel. That is actually bullshit, but only because of a bad translation. Now you can download a fan translation, and in Japanese, the clue is a bit more reasonable. The rest of the game, if anything, is actually too easy, unless you're trying to get the best ending by finishing the game very quickly. However, since I also mentioned Castlevania III, the NES version is actually bullshit because they made it harder than the Japanese version on purpose, namely by making it so if you die at Dracula you need to repeat the whole last level. That sucks. But Akumajo Densetsu for Famicom is one of the greatest games ever made, and doesn't have that one problem. Ninja Gaiden has a very similar problem, though. I could never actually beat Ninja Gaiden.
I was recently gifted Sonic Origins Plus for Switch. People complained about this game a lot, but I haven't noticed many problems yet, except that the "Plus" content is a download, making the physical version bullshit, but retards on this site use Steam, so they wouldn't care. Another famous thing about Origins is that it changed some of the music in Sonic 3, the stuff that everyone is pretty sure was by Michael Jackson. While I do love the originals, the ones used in Origins didn't bother me as much as I thought they would. As fans have figured out, these ones are actually the originals, and were replaced once Jackson came on board, so these fit the game well, arguably even better. But I'll always have a hard time getting over the loss of Ice Cap Zone's awesome music. Or I could just play the old versions, or the many hacks and mods people have made. But these are simple, and I like having them on a portable system like the Switch. They have widescreen and all that. The ability to play as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy (and Knuckles/Amy & Tails) is nice. The ability for them all to become Super in any game is nice (though you need cheats to do it in games where it couldn't originally be done). The "Story Mode" where you play all the games in a row, with new FMV cutscenes connecting them, is nice. However, I wish that in Plus, there was an option to play Story Mode with all the Game Gear games added in. They don't need to make new cutscenes, just let me play all the games in a row, pretending they're one giant game. I know I can just pick them from the menu. That's not the point. That's not what I want. Story Mode is pretty fun, so if they added new games, add them to Story Mode. Oh yeah, it also bugs me that they left out Spinball, 3D Blast, and Chaotix. Everyone talks about how they should have had all the Master System games, since fans seem to prefer those versions over their Game Gear equivalents (which are often ports), but I'm missing the rest of the Genesis games more. They have Spinball for Game Gear, which is practically unplayable, but couldn't include the real version of Spinball? That's a much bigger travesty than not having the Master System version of Sonic 1 and 2. I know modern perceptions of Genesis Spinball aren't great anymore, but that was a high selling game. Growing up, that was a legitimate Sonic game to me. It's referenced in Origins, with its island appearing on the menu, along with 3D Blast's. Just include it. Also, 3D Blast is actually a very good game, and I'm tired of pretending it's not. And original director Jon Burton actually made a Director's Cut a few years ago. If he can do it, Sega could just copy his work exactly and could have included it here. They could even make it a selling point, a new and improved version. Nerds will know it already existed, but now it would be official. And of course they should make it widescreen too, but that fantasy might be a step too far. I understand this is Sega I'm talking about. But still, even if they only included Genesis 3D Blast in its most basic form, I would have appreciated it. That's a good game. And I know Chaotix is also a game that gets very mixed reception. Personally, I think it's only really fun if you have a friend who is also a massive Sonic fan, so that you can both try to learn and get used to the game together. Adjusting to the ridiculous rubber-band mechanic is certainly a challenge. But come on. They included Spinball for Game Gear. Chaotix is better than that, and the closest you get to a "canon" sequel to Sonic & Knuckles, at least until Sonic Adventure. It's basically the same team that made Sonic CD, and it shows. It should have been included for sure. All that said, I've still beaten all the four/five main games included here, with all characters. Of course, I've done that before, but Amy is new and kind of neat, even if she is basically just Sonic 3 Sonic without the elemental shields. Next I'm going to do one more run as Sonic, through all the games, including the Game Gear games. I'll do the real Story Mode, in the proper order. Well I guess it won't be fully as Sonic, since the two Tails games are included. And also it will bug me that Genesis Spinball, Chaotix, and 3D Blast aren't here, so maybe I'll just play those outside this compilation. Except Spinball is so absurdly hard, and Chaotix actually does suck without a second player who is in the same mood for such a ridiculous game. But come on, I'm not gonna play Sonic Blast and not Sonic 3D Blast. That said, I will play Sonic Blast twice, because after beating every game in a row in the canon route (including Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but not in the other games), I'll then go and do the Game Gear games as the secondary characters. At least I'll do Tails in Sonic & Tails 1 and 2, and Knuckles in Sonic Blast. I don't think I'll be beating Sonic Drift 1 and 2 with every character. But maybe that will be the very last thing I do. Those games aren't so bad once you get used to them. Sonic Drift 2 actually becomes pretty charming. >tl;dr: Sonic Origins Plus should have had everything on the actual physical cart, obviously, and it should have included Genesis Spinball, Chaotix, and 3D Blast (ideally upgraded like the DX version, which isn't official but should be, and is by the actual director). And yes, it should have included the Master System versions as well. But I still liked it enough to beat the hell out of every bit of content it has. Well almost. Still gotta do the Game Gear games. But I like most of them so that's fine. Maybe not Game Gear Spinball though. That game is practically unplayable. Sonic Blast also sucks, but I'll still beat it twice. Now to wait for Sonic's 40th Anniversary compilation, when they can actually include all the games. But you know what I really want? Forget the Master System versions. Why doesn't somebody, even a fan, just make faithful recreations of the 8-bit games, but on Genesis. Every damn Sonic game has a million hacks. There are so many Sonic fan games, including ones that claim to be remakes of the 8-bit games, but really what they are are new games with some elements inspired by the 8-bit games. I want the actual 8-bit games, with the same level layouts, but on Genesis, with Genesis graphics. Like Sonic 1 8-bit re-uses several of the same level themes from the Genesis game, but with new layouts. Give me those layouts but on Genesis. And then I'm sure the autists that make Sonic hacks wouldn't have any problem recreating the original level themes like Bridge Zone or Sky Base Zone. Bridge Zone isn't even really an original theme either. What Sega needs to do is hire some nerds to just make these games faithfully, then include them in a massive Story Mode for the next Sonic compilation. And include the remaining Genesis/32X games like I've been complaining about. Now, what a lot of people don't know is that Sonic 1 for Master System actually has surprisingly different level layouts than Sonic 1 for Game Gear. So that makes it tricky, because I know they would never remake both. I guess the Master System version was the original, so okay, make that the base. But I personally had the Game Gear version as a kid, because nobody even heard of Master System back then, so I would miss the Game Gear version. But still, just make these games for Genesis, Sega. Also, include Sonic R. I know it's a Saturn game, but come on. Just include all the games that came out before Sonic Adventure. I'll cut some slack and allow Sonic Jam to be left out, since Sonic World isn't a real game, and the Game.com version of Sonic Jam is one of the worst games ever made. But Sonic R is good, and like I said about 3D Blast, I'm tired of pretending its not. Traveller's Tales made some good games back in the '90s.
>>30710 Are the Satellaview games fully translated? I assume the voice acting is only in Japanese needs some other software outside the emulator.
>>30714 Zelda 1's non linearity works against it in the sense that even progression related locations and items can be difficult to find. It's a game where a lot of the playtime is spent wandering around aimlessly which's kinda of cool at first until you realize that you're getting your ass handed to you constantly and you can't find any upgrades. This is by design, it's a cryptic game. Later Zelda games made progression as retard-proof as possible while limiting the secrets to optional objectives as to not disrupt the player's momentum, it became an optional goal you're encouraged to do rather than buying Nintendo Power to figure out how to push rocks, find that unmarked bomb spot, the screen scroll secrets, etc. I will give it less shit tho because, as I said, RPGs got better during the fourth generation. Zelda 1 was held back by its cartridge's storage space, so you couldn't have more sensible hints through signs, cutscenes and NPCs like in ALttP.
>>30717 The Satellaview games are all translated. You can play with either a fan dub, which yes, is very cringy, or fan subs with the original voices. Normally I hate dubs, but with the nature of how you're on a strict time limit and expected to keep playing while listening to audio cues, I do feel the dub is useful in this case. There are also other versions you can download that eliminate the time mechanic and stuff. But I wanted to play in the most authentic way possible, and the time limit is part of that. >>30719 The sequels making things retard proof isn't an advantage. They just removed exploration, which was the whole appeal of the original game. And again I think you're overestimating the difficulty of all the mandatory "secrets" in Zelda I. There are clues for all of them. I wasn't even born when the game came out, but when I eventually got around to it, I beat it without a guide. I will say that it feels huge and aimless at the very start, but the further you get in the game, the more that disappears. That's called mastering the game. You're supposed to feel small and lost at the start, and then you get better and it all becomes easy. And unlike RPGs, only a little of that is due to character progression. Rather, it's skill progression. You learn the map, the landmarks, and the clues. You explore and get better. Just find that first dungeon, then you're on your way. And then you reach the last dungeon and it's absurdly hard. But it's the last dungeon, so it makes sense.
>>30710 >needing a guide and save states to beat Zelda 1 and 2 I am of the camp that believes that you were not intended to beat the game sitting alone in your room, but rather discussing the game with others and together over the course of many months slowly piecing together a solution for the game and beating it. Unfortunately we no longer live in such a time, so I had to take the Nintendo Power option. My policy is that if I get stuck, I spend 1-2 hours trying to figure shit out, and if I still can't get it, I admit defeat and use a guide. I've got other games I want to play after this one. If Nintendo had a problem with people using guides they wouldn't have released official guides or had an official hotline to call for help. As for save states, it's just annoying to die in a dungeon and lose all your hearts and stuff and have to spend 20 minutes running around collecting everything so you can have another stab at the dungeon. LttP fixes this shit. In some dungeon rooms I had to reload 10 times before I could clear it, which would have meant several hours of repetitive gameplay just to clear a single particularly difficult room in one of the dungeons. My savestate rule was that I didn't save in the middle of any fights, so I had to clear each room properly and kill each boss properly. I didn't actually need the guide much for Zelda 2. The only things I remember needing to look up is how to find the hidden village, and I had to look at a map of the final dungeon after I had done like 5 laps of it. But I did need a ton of save states for the final dungeon. It would've taken me fucking weeks to clear that otherwise. I'm just not interested in spending weeks of my life playing the same dungeon over and over. The bragging rights aren't worth it to me. But yeah whatever, if you beat Zelda 1 and 2 without save states or a guide, hats off to you, you are the better gamer. >After Link to the Past, don't ignore Link's Awakening Yeah I've heard that LA is a really good game. I grew up with the N64, so the 3D Zeldas appeal to me more, and after playing 3 2D Zeldas I feel a bit of fatigue and want to go back to the familiar, but I would definitely like to circle back to LA when I get the chance. I have to admit I have really enjoyed the 2D Zeldas a lot more than I thought I would. >>30712 >AlttP is easily my favorite Zelda game For some reason I thought I wouldn't like it. I think it's because people used to rip the graphics from that game and use it to make shitty RPG Maker games, so I associated "the look" with shitty games lol. But yeah as soon as I started playing it I really got into it. Second dungeon feels very different from the first one, whereas in the previous 2 games, all the dungeons had kinda the same feeling to them. The overworld looks small on the map but in-game it isn't, and it's pretty fun to explore. The further I get into the game, the more surprised I get at how many new ideas they brought into the Zelda formula. >>30720 >They just removed exploration, which was the whole appeal of the original game Exploration isn't running around the map bombing every single tile to see what happens. Exploration is talking to a villager who says that there's a rumor of some great treasure hidden in a cave to the north. There should be at least some kind of direction, especially for things critical for the main plot of the game. Zelda 2 took that second approach and I was fine with it and barely needed a guide for it except when the direction was so vague I had no idea what I was supposed to do. I could fuck around for the entire afternoon or I could get a hint from a guide and be on my merry way.
>>30727 >But yeah whatever, if you beat Zelda 1 and 2 without save states or a guide, hats off to you, you are the better gamer. That's not what I meant. I found Zelda 2 absurdly difficult at first, like most people seem to. But I was playing it wrong. You just have to actually learn to play. Using crutches cripples your development and stops you from getting good enough to actually fully enjoy the game. This doesn't just apply to Zelda II. All those games people say are good but hard, when I forced myself to get good instead of relying on Save States, I enjoyed them way more. I will use Save States on games that aren't that great, but Zelda II is. That said, yeah, I don't blame you for using Save States at the beginning of a dungeon in Zelda I just so you don't have to run out and find a fairy if you die. The first time I played that game I was determined not to use Save States, and basically had to beat the final dungeon on three hearts, because running to refill your hearts every time you die is bullshit and makes it way less fun. But beating it on three hearts also isn't fun. But Save States in the middle of a dungeon? Might as well be doing a TAS at that point. >2D Zelda vs 3D Personally I prefer 2D Zelda most of the time. I find they're generally more puzzle focused, which I like. I usually like the artstyles better. Plus they're generally shorter, so it's not a huge investment to go and beat a Game Boy game. You get a bonus for beating it in one sitting (without deaths), so it's something that Nintendo expected could be done. >Exploration isn't running around the map bombing every single tile to see what happens. That's not what Zelda I expects you to do, though. There are a couple of places where you have to bomb a wall or flame a bush that doesn't have a clue, but those are all for optional hearts or whatever. The mandatory ones are all rather obvious or have clues. There are some of those old villagers that give you clues, and other times there are contextual clues on the actual field (the bush at the dead end, which actually does have a villager tell you a clue, even though I don't think it's at all necessary). The part of Zelda I I think is least appealing is the combat. It never felt very smooth or natural to me, even though I beat the game several times.
>>30707 See, I just can't stand AA5. The cases felt like they lasted an eternity (especially Turnabout Academy, holy fucking shit dude. I know it's not the longest case by a looooong shot but it sure as fuck feels like the longest) and the finale is basically the anime version of the Lost finale (aka a biiiiig middle finger)
>>30742 >>30707 I do agree that AA5 has the better bonus case though (because teenage Pearl is very cute + orca in the court meme)
I've been playing way too much Elin lately. send help
