It serves the same purpose, it filters out people who would actively ruin the community and create discord (as in chaos, not the app). I mean nothing is actually stopping them, but most people are cowards and once you can't hide behind total anonymity it's a lot harder to act that way. What was it Penny Arcade called it in the early 2000s? The Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory?

>and the difference in people back then the worst you usually had to deal with is some rule sperging
First off that's not remotely true, I was a member of Spoony's forum back in the day and I could tell you how untrue it was and how there was always a difference between "the cool mods" and "the asshole mods", and which was which pretty much depended on how much of a stick they had up their ass.
Spoony's brother Miles though was an admin and he was always super chill and imo had way better takes on movies than his brother.
Secondly, rules sperging was actually the thing people got shit for the least because odds are if you were dedicated enough to post on a forum then you probably were the type of person who would follow its rules. What usually got you banned was not rule-breaking, but just consistently being an asshole that brought down the vibe in threads.
