So I'm about 100 episodes into this and I don't know how I feel about it. The first 60 episodes or so are pretty solid. Themes of transhumanism and dreams. A big part of the message of the first half is that you can't let anything get in the way of you achieveing your dreams. A space bandit straight up hands tetsuro a space revolver and tells him that space wants him dead and if he wants to achieve his dream then he better learn to shoot first. Tetsuro takes the gun and for a decent number of episodes is wholly on board with that idea. He doesn't let anyone fuck with him and he stays alive. Another good thing is that the show is fairly consistent with where the line is for tetsuro to draw his gun is and where the line for him to shoot is at this point. Fast forward to the second half of the show and now all of a sudden shooting first is bad and in fact not shooting first saves them for completely illogical reasons that the characters would have no idea about. There's an episode where the express is being attacked by weird giant bug babies and tetsuro wont shoot them but he and everyone else know that the only alternative letting onboard the express to eat all of the passengers. There are several episodes like this where instead of tetsuro's grit and determination getting him ahead but instead it's actually his love and kindness and whatever other lame shit that would get you killed in the lawless frontiers of space. There's even an episode where he volunteers to be a slave in exchange for a guy he met that episode and he has no backup plan. He's just throwing away his future and his dream right there for this guy. Of course everything resolves itself because of his amazing selflessness and kindness. The show is also unclear about when teturo will draw and shoot at this point. There are times when he wont draw when he should like when matael is in danger and then there's a time where he straight up DRAWS AND FIRES at a lady for treating the conductor like shit. I mean fair enough, she was a huge bitch but thats still a bit insane. Some small other complaints: The show is pretty inconsistent with the way the conductor handles tetsuro being late/not having his pass. Sometimes he's very conflicted, sometimes he tells them to fuck off. On a couple rare occasions he actually goes with them to help them get their passes back. The railway company(can't remember what they're called right now) is also inconsistent. They claim they are the greatest railway in existence but at the same time they don't give a shit who actually boards the train as long as you have a pass. Security to actually check if your pass is yours is extremely lax; there might be only a couple episodes where someone gets in trouble for having a stolen pass. Usually its perfectly fine. They don't give a fuck if YOUR pass is stolen, thats your problem not theirs. They won't stop the train or back it up if you fall out the window/are left behind/whatever but theres an episode where they commence a fucking orbital bombardment of a planet because the guy there is holding tetsuro and matael hostage. They also execute stow aways and this can include you if you try to get back onto the express if you pass is stolen. The show is weird about how many people are actually onboard the express. 90 percent of the time if seems like its literally just the three of them and an occasional extra person for that episode but there were also one or two episodes where a number of people walk out when the express is threatened by an giant alien. The conductor also acts like he's constantly busy. What the fuck does he have to do all day when he only has 2 passengers and a computer handles the locomotive? There's a lot of woman moments in the show and half of those times matael straight up tells tetsuro to just let the lady have her stupid woman moment. I don't even know what to make of the harlock episodes So yeah, not entirely sure what I think about the show. I might read the manga after I'm done to see whats filler and what isn't. Maybe the stupid parts are all filler. Guess I'll see.
