I'm trying to get the hang of it as a new player, and I understand that axe is the mobility mode but I swear that sword would feel so much more comfortable in wilds if the character were to take half a pace further forward with his sword attacks.
I think part of the problem is that I'm coming from insect glaive, so that's the level of mobility that I'm accustomed to. I'm starting to learn some of the moves, so I know to make use of morph strikes and that "forward heavy" axe attack where you take a good step forward, but it's really annoying against some monsters like Lala Barina that just do a backflip 10 meters away from you the moment that you get within range to start hitting them in sword mode. It feels like there are lots of "get back here you fucking cunt" moments against a lot of monsters. Barina/rathalos/rathian feel the most frequently obnoxious. Reydau and arkveld bounce around a lot too. I've been exploring secondary weapons that go with my IG so that I have options with more comfortable blocks/parries that don't have prerequisites like IG's offset, and Swax and charge blade are the two that I started with first. I feel like charge blade clicked with me a bit more, but that might be because charge blade might have a lower skill floor that switch axe. I'm trying to give switch axe more time because honestly its offsets and parries are more fun even if I think charge blade's perfect blocks are easier.
What weapon decorations do you slot into your switch axe? I'm using zoh shia's swax since I'm stubbornly refusing to even give artian weapons the time of day. I want to run something to help maintain sharpness, but I feel taxed in my decoration choices. My gut makes me think that the morph attacks are paramount for the weapon and that I want the morph speed decorations to lean into that. I also feel like the weapon strongly encourages you to have power prolonger to keep the sword amped gauge online longer. But then I'm out of decoration slots and can't make room for handicraft or razor sharp.
