Where to put your faith Nameless Fairy 08/10/2020 (Mon) 12:02:07 No. 493
So, suppose you actually had to make a choice between the three different main religions in Gensokyo - Shintoism, Taoism, and Buddhism. What would you pick? Or would you rather found your own religion?

Shinto is really comfy.
If I had to make a choice between those three, I'd go with Taoism, but as an unironic /monster/ Ammitist I'd enjoy looking into what Gensokyo could potentially provide for the latter.

>>495 Anon said it. It's probably just because it feels exotic now that the worship is mostly practiced as a hobby, but I like these local beliefs that kept isolated communities together. Honorable mention goes to buddhism, since who knows if shrines would have existed without it.
I'd bring over slavic paganism. So that I can teach the girls to worship the hard wooden dick-god.
>>499 If things in Europe keep going as they are (which I pray never happens), you wouldn't need to bring Slavic (or other Indo-European) paganism. Deities, spirits, and other mythological beings would probably end up in Gensokyo on their own. As for the thread topic, after looking into the 3, I would go with Shintoism (though the others have some good aspects to them).
>>499 Are you sure you want that when someone like Perun might come out like this? What am I even saying - he'll be a cute girl like everyone else
>>503 That whole religion is about growing your beard out down to your testicles and rituals involving gangbanging village girls who just wanted to have fun jumping through the fire. So he'd probably look more like Youki, except even older, with an impossibly giant beard and cumming thunder. Maybe a thundercloud instead of his Myon.

>implying there was ever a choice
>>513 I feel ya man. Gensokyo's religions are okay by themselves, but between Moriya's constant shady shit, Byakuren's constant nagging and smol dick Shoutoku and his goons being all around annoying AF I think I'd rather believe in myself.
>>495 >worshipping 'nature' and 'trees' Fucking tree huggers >>513 >Forgetting that buddhism doesn't approve of intoxication Fucking degenerates >>499 >Slavic Baganism More like 'i have no idea how all this shit works, but i wanna see it because >muh ancestor'
>>515 Buddhism doesn't approve of a lot of things.
>>513 I don't get why everyone insists Kanako is a lying snake (which she admittedly is), but then conveniently forgets Miko likewise told her subjects to be good cattle by studying Buddhism while she put her faith in a bona-fide sociopath called Seiga and studied Taoism in secret.
>>517 His subjects were in on this shit. At least the ones that lived to become 2hos. Shoutoku promoted Buddhism to the commoners of japan because a country is easy to rule over when your citizens are cattle. Meanwhile he himself was a Taoist because it offers a lot of stoinks like fucking over the circle of Samara to join celestial master race. Or if you don't care about becoming a celestial you can skip 1000 years of mental and physical training and abandonment of all of your human desires and instead opt-in for a Suicide-sex reassignment surgery to stop yourself from dying (c) by Seiga-nyan (tm). What Shoutoku didn't account for is that Buddhists have seen through his plan of using Taoist bullshit to revive himself and instate a thousand year tranny reich and fucked him over by praying his revival away until he and his mausoleum faded into obscurity and landed in Gensokyou. Then Byakuren was supposed to follow this mausoleum to Gensokyou, build a temple on top of it and keep him asleep indefinitely, but her clique ran into trouble along the way like forgetting Byakuren in hell and getting shot down by a certain futa crow and the rest we know.
>>517 >but then conveniently forgets Miko likewise told her subjects to be good cattle by studying Buddhism while she put her faith in a bona-fide sociopath called Seiga and studied Taoism in secret. Mainly because in SoPM she ends up pretty quickly admitting what she did was wrong and that she isn't really in a position to call herself much better than the other religious leaders of Gensokyo as a result. Despite most people seeing her as overly prideful, she's ended up displaying humility quite a few times since her rebirth, like bowing deeply to Kasen in front of all of her followers. Additionally, her saying that she gained the power of faith while asleep implies that she may have become more genuine during that time. To put it simply, Toyosatomimi is great for similar reasons to why Youmu is: she has as much of a dark side as most characters in the Gensokyo setting do, but her earnestness makes her refreshing for said setting. >>519 >falling for twittertranny propaganda about her being the ebin trans rights spokeswoman She was female even before becoming a shikaisen, it's an alternate history thing. >Then Byakuren was supposed to follow this mausoleum to Gensokyou, build a temple on top of it and keep him asleep indefinitely, but her clique ran into trouble along the way like forgetting Byakuren in hell and getting shot down by a certain futa crow and the rest we know. Wasn't there something about how placing the temple on top of the mausoleum inadvertently did something to stimulate Miko and Futo's revival instead of sealing them as intended?
>>520 >was female even before becoming a shikaisen I don't remember that being a thing. Sauce, please? >alternate history thing. REEEE, 2HYS ARE REAL. >all because of the temple Maybe. I don't remember all of the lore by heart, so I just assumed they arrived too late because of Okuu.
>>522 >I don't remember that being a thing. Sauce, please? I think it was mostly a part of Sanae's ending in Ten Desires, but I could have sworn that it was also mentioned by ZUN a bit after Ten Desires. Something about everyone thinking she was a tranny too at first and then her suddenly being more liked when ZUN said she was a girl all along. >so I just assumed they arrived too late because of Okuu I could have sworn that the events of Subterranean Animism were what pushed Murasa, etc. out of the underworld to begin with. In other words, Kanako was indirectly responsible for the events of at least 3 hu games.
>>523 >Sauce. Okay then. Either way, Miko will forever be the face of r/Touhou trannies but not for the reasons they think. >Palanquin is actually Myouren temple and it was sealed in hell along with Byakuren Fuck, that's right. I always forget because their design is godfucking nothing alike.
>>524 >Either way, Miko will forever be the face of r/Touhou trannies but not for the reasons they think. Do you think most of Miko's followers at her temple see her as a trans rights spokeswoman too and that's the actual reason she just uses them as gofers?
>>525 Maybe not all of them, but Futo for example I wouldn't put above this.
>>526 Although Futo still sorta retains much of her former dark side unlike Miko, her joviality makes it really hard not to like her anyway. I wish we had ever gotten some kind of dialogue from Soga to get a better handle on her personality aside from her one-liners in one of Miko's spellcards. All we really know is that she's said to be sweet despite what she's like when angry, and that she speaks much more like a delinquent compared to Futo.
>>525 Which makes me wonder. If different branches of 2ho fans were religions, which would be which? I wanted to say we're Moriya because normalfags see us as shady, but honestly, we're more like Hakurei since we just chug on our tea and have no real agenda other than having everyone else fuck off.
>>528 >but honestly, we're more like Hakurei since we just chug on our tea and have no real agenda other than having everyone else fuck off. Sounds semi-accurate, but it's not like anyone is coming to us for help with certain problems. As for what branch of 2hu fan might be Taoism, I really have no idea if there are any. I've got a somewhat "if I had met one, I would have become one" mentality on Taoism thus far. Asking Miko questions would probably be a lot better way of getting a decent understanding of the religion's principles than one would among today's grain-gobbling and highly materialistic nu-Taoists or the /sunflower/ pseudo-Taoists, though. Even with the outer layer of wackiness still being present.

>>527 What mostly baffles me about Tojiko is her apparently "forgiving" Futo for effectively murdering her. While Futo presumably had not planned for her to stick around as a ghost afterwards. >>530 Does Miko even proselytize new followers? I think she and the rest of the crew specifically fucked off to their own magical realm to have their peace and quiet.
>>531 >What mostly baffles me about Tojiko is her apparently "forgiving" Futo for effectively murdering her. While Futo presumably had not planned for her to stick around as a ghost afterwards. I thought that was rather unbelievable too for a while up until I read Futo's possible motive was what happened with her family dying off during the religious war between Futo and Soga's families. >>531 >Does Miko even proselytize new followers? She brings them over to her temple somehow, but she's commented to Kasen that said followers don't really want to become hermits for any of the right reasons. I think it's something along the lines of them mostly just admiring cool hermit powers and wanting to do them rather than wanting to advance their mental strength into becoming egoless, spontaneous, unoffendable entities like the immortals of Taoism are generally depicted as.
>>530 Well, everything prince knows about Taoism comes from Seiga, who seems to practice it more as a lifestyle-hobby than a legit ideology. From 2ho hermits it seems like some sort of Buddhism-lite where you answer to your own consciousness as opposed to some Hecatia's Higher Power LTD and focus on self-improvement for your own sake as opposed to living a "decent" life out of fear of punishment. >533 Taoism seems like something you do yourself as opposed to following someone else. It makes sense to me why hermits wouldn't take followers.
>>534 >Well, everything prince knows about Taoism comes from Seiga, who seems to practice it more as a lifestyle-hobby than a legit ideology. One of Miko's lines in Ten Desires implies she truly learned much of her current wisdom of the Tao from the time she was slumbering in the mausoleum. She did say she gained the power of faith while she was asleep, after all. >Taoism seems like something you do yourself as opposed to following someone else. As far as I know, yeah, Taoism strongly emphasizes personal spiritual growth rather than following others. A lot of old-school Taoism in fact was something of a counterculture to Confucianism, to the point of many actions of gods/folk deities praised in Confucian thought being viewed as something along the lines of "the corruption of heaven." Try looking into the practice of Bigu and what gliadin is/does to see why pic related has its filename. On a side note, I wondered in the past why there was no Confucian group in Gensokyo despite Confucianism having been relevant to Japan, but then I realized that the moon residents might actually be that faction already. Additionally, I remember Yuugi had a bantery spell card referencing the four things Confucius said he could not understand.

>>531 >I think she and the rest of the crew specifically fucked off to their own magical realm to have their peace and quiet. They did lay low after their plan got fucked over, but as evidenced by his dream self, prince still wants to conquer the world to rid it from (((evil))). So, after reviewing the footage to make picrelated I'm convinced. 2ho Taoism is a religion of capitalism and Miko is an Andrew Ryan wannabe.

>>536 Also if you zoom the picture in you can see that Joon's sprite is misaligned by 1 pixel from the bottom of the screen. 1/10, shit girl.
>>536 That is a shallow conclusion, but it does make me remember how the real Sukuna is still trapped in the dream world to this day while her dream self has been causing trouble like what happened at the fireworks festival.
>>540 Never thought of that, but it actually makes a lot of sense. She is the only one whose dreamworld self we don't beat up, right?
>>541 Yeah. Jo'on mentions maybe having forgotten something at the end, and I hadn't remembered what it was at the time, but then I read one of ZUN's interviews where that was discussed. Do you think she'll ever make it back?
>>542 With 17.5 I don't think we'll see any modern fighting 2hos for a while, so if she does return it probably won't be soon. Did Doremy overlook her? Or does she just not give a fuck? Maybe she's purposely hogging Maru all for herself. Honestly, with her involved everything is a wildcard. Speaking of which. If dreams are basically person's subconsciousness, does that mean Koishi's dream self is normal?
>>543 Maybe Koishi's self and dream self are one in the same, causing her to vanish into the dream realm whenever she goes to sleep.
>>544 Even before dreamworld I thought of her as having her conscious self trapped inside her closed eye.
>>545 Actually, I find it funny how with Doremy ZUN was like: >Fuck, I wanna portray a unique concept that was already explored upon in the universe but in an incompatible way. What do? >*Beer break* >That's right, clones on the moon!
>>535 >Confuscianism Probably because confuscianism itself isn't really that much of an 'organized religion' as most people think it is, as well the fact that it has influenced so much of East Asian culture / beliefs that portraying them as it is might be considered moot. Though most of them just takes the teachings and ran with it, not caring much about the rituals except on special occasions. One thing that i know for sure though, is that they are places for people to pray to their ancestors as well as giving them gifts by burning them to be taken to the after life. Kind of like Shintoism, but i have almost zero knowledge of Shintoism.
>>540 Imagine waking up one day to the news of how you've slept for two years straight and in the meantime your dream self became an infamous BLMrorist. At least she didn't end up killing someone thanks to Reimu.
Do you accept Kanako a your goddess?
>>744 The Moriya Shrine must be getting desperate for faith.
>>745 Well, it works.
>>744 Doesn’t snakes only have a cloaca for sex / pooping?
>>752 This isn't /monster/.
