Maybe you don't imagine or hear anything when you're reading, you just see letters on a page and nothing more, not everyone hears the letters on the page. Some of us can't help but hear something when we read the letters, we feel the words as though they are spoken. Its not as simple as just understanding (laugh goes here). Having the wrong laugh can entirely fuck a character up, like if Darth Vador walks into a scene and instantly goes "Teehee, teeheehee" it doesn't fit. We don't just go "Well obviously that laugh is just a placeholder", we're taken out of the scene because its unfitting.
Every laugh has a personality profile behind it, every laugh has a mood behind it, every laugh creates a feeling, it creates a story, its something the translators didn't understand at all. I read every laugh like its a fairy sort of "Teehee" fake little girl laugh, its incredibly offputting most of the time. If they had made it "hehe" it would be understandable, "Haha" is understandable, or optimally just translate the laughs phonetically from the japanese or even korean text. I've checked the korean text, all the heehee laughs are either meant to be "fufu" or "hehe" in the original text, both of which would be better. For me the final node of the most recent event was almost unreadable with all the heehees. During the arius summer event it was unreadable for me when Hime and Hiyori have the same heeheehee laugh; when in korean Hime has a "fufu" laugh and Hiyori has a "ehehe" laugh. A characters laugh is the most direct expression of their personality, its something that gives them an individual feeling or gives a very immediate insight of their personality. The localizers don't really care about that so they standardize all the laughs in the game, but standardization is the exact opposite of individuality or soul, it quite literally makes the characters more soulless to erase their laughs into "teehee"
Might sound like I'm overhyping it but it is a big annoyance when I'm reading the momo's and story when I have to read heehee over a thousand times.
