Horror Anthologies Story Time Anonymous 10/31/2022 (Mon) 06:19:26 No. 30204
It's this time of the year. I have been reading old horror anthologies lately and it is crazy how often stories are actually good in ones from EC and from Warren. Even back then anthologies were mostly hit and miss, yet somehow these two publishers built up a stable of good artists and writers who managed to produce good books consistently. Jennifer is one of my favorites so far. It was originally published in Creepy #63. Dark Horse reprint collections have it in volume 12. It was adapted in Masters of Horror series' fourth episode directed by Dario Argento.

Now it's time for something from Eerie. It was another Warren magazine, a younger sibling to Creepy, created after that horror anthology was successful. Allegedly, the first issue of Creepy was rushed out quickly so Warren could secure magazine's title before Myron Fass had a chance to snag it. A Matter of Routine appeared in Eerie #5 and Dark Horse republished it in Eerie Archives v1. It was written by Archie Goodwin and Illustrated by Gene Colan. It feels like a middle ground between a Twilight Zone episode and one of the early Lovercraft stories. >>30205 It didn't notice that the author's names are gone in reprints. Jenifer was written by Bruce Jones and drawn by Bernie Wrightson.

Scared to Death was published in the EC's famous Tales from the Crypt magazine, issue #24. It's a simple story, but done well enough to be very satisfying. Feldsteion's writing is competent enough to be smooth in spite of being more verbose than modern comics. Wally Wood's art helps a lot too, even if a good amount of it hidden behind speech balloons. You might also see a common thread of an opportunistic suppose running through both stories from EC books I posted. They are far from being the only ones. For some reason writers working for EC liked to use that setup.

Foul Play was published in the 19th issue of The Haunt of Fear. This is the third horror anthology EC had in print. The story itself is rather average. However, it's an interesting piece of comics history. That's one of the comics that Seduction of the Innocent was using as an example and was one of favorite targets of several pundits pushing for censorship. It isn't anything controversial by today's standards. Like a lot of EC's horror stories, it is written by Feldsteion. The artist is Jack Davis who is best know for his work in Cracked and MAD magazines.

Vampirella's first book was not all about her. It was a magazine Vampi shared with other horror stories unrelated to her at all. In addition to having her own stories in the magazine, she sometimes served as the host. Many of these stories would not be out of place in Creepy or Eerie. However, they were more likely to verge into abstract or wacky territory in my eyes. Zooner or Later by Jones and Heath created for issue #78 is one such story. In addition it is more lighthearted than ones I posted so far. It's a bit longer too. This was my second choice for a story to represent Vampirella magazine. Image quality in my first pick was not very good. To the point it was hard to see the art. I will look for a better quality copy and post it later.

It's this time of the year again. This time I will start spooky story times earlier. This is a short story from the Vampirella magazine, issue 8. A bitter WW2 veteran is waiting for his wife to join him in England. War really changed him, and he's no longer a man he used to be. It's fairly standard story for horror anthologies but this one is more efficient and has better art than other ones like it - especially in the early days of Warren magazines. It's solid and perfect to get this spooky season started. It has a campfire story feel to it.

I was going through old horror anthologies at a comic shop about 15 years ago and I came across one that I've never found in any download. I can't remember the title, but it had the craziest story about two adventurers who were trying to find one specific girl in a harem whose "pussy kinda tickles." So these guys spend the entire night porking their way through the harem and just as I got to the part where the one guy found her, the shop owner told me it wasn't a library. Never did find out what series it was. Black and white, magazine format, and really bizarre.
>>41599 That sounds like something straight from the tail end of the B&W boom era. Probably some niche magazine that. Most material from that era has been lost to time. I never came across it, and I have a decent amount of scans of old comics.

It's been a while. Today's story is The Shrieking Man from Eerie #4. This is another Goodwyn script. It is illustrated by Ditko but he's using a style that's different from the ones he's known for. It looks very good and fits the script perfectly. The story focuses on Dr Mandel who runs an insane asylum, and a younger doctor Colbert who joins him. Over time Colbert becomes obsessed with curing a patient known only as shrieking man.

(682.36 KB 1188x1616 Shrieking Man 7.jpg)

>>41643 Yeah, I've never come across a download for it either. Did a search for magazines from that era but didn't find it. It wasn't an outright porno mag like Penthouse Comix or whatever. It was horror or fantasy just incredibly uncensored. I'd love to find it again just to find out if the "pussy that tickles" was actually maggots in an undead or some kind of eldritch abomination in human form.

(745.99 KB 1192x1636 Collector's Edition 4.jpg)

It's time for another story. There was one from Vampirella, another one from Eerie, so it's only fair to have something from Creepy. Collector's Edition from issue #10 is one of the famous Warren stories. It follows a collector of occult antiques. He is trying to add very a rare tome to his collection. This is another Ditko and Goodwyn collaboration. Ditko's art is more in line with the style he used most often. It works very well for the story. He went an extra mile and included great etching on close-up panels. Goodwyn wrote a lot of good scripts but this one is among his best. It is a short story but the script manages to be clever and to include a lot without feeling rushed or crammed.

(565.89 KB 1180x1624 Thing of Darkness 4.jpg)

"Thing of Darkness" is another story from Creepy #10. It's a simple story that thrives off of the mystery of what the man on the metro tracks saw before he was found. It also neatly ties to real events from 1965. Goodwin is the one writing, as he was for many of them, and art is by Eugene Colan. He uses interesting diagonal panels. It's rare to see comic book artists use these well. Here there are used not only for action but for the mood too. Another interesting device is coloring the page gutter black for pages that take place in the dark and white for the ones in the light. It neatly ties with the themes of light and darkness in the story too.

(648.85 KB 1192x1628 Gargoyle 3.jpg)

(657.39 KB 1196x1620 Gargoyle 4.jpg)

Time for another story from Creepy. Gargoyle was published in issue #6 and reprinted numerous times in later issues. It's a good story about a driven alchemist obsessed with finding ways to turn ordinary materials into gold. He suspects that local sculptor might have occult knowledge and decides to extract it from him.

(734.21 KB 1188x1620 The Cask of Amontillado 4.jpg)

And yet another story from Creepy #6, as it was a strong issues with most stories being good to very good. The Cask of Amontillado is an adaptation of Poe's classic story of the same name. Goodwin and Crandall's adaptation expends upon it a bit with a prologue and an expanded ending.
