Horror Anthologies Story Time Anonymous 10/31/2022 (Mon) 06:19:26 No. 30204
It's this time of the year. I have been reading old horror anthologies lately and it is crazy how often stories are actually good in ones from EC and from Warren. Even back then anthologies were mostly hit and miss, yet somehow these two publishers built up a stable of good artists and writers who managed to produce good books consistently. Jennifer is one of my favorites so far. It was originally published in Creepy #63. Dark Horse reprint collections have it in volume 12. It was adapted in Masters of Horror series' fourth episode directed by Dario Argento.

The last story is from Eerie #3. It's about a town plagued by a strange series of deaths and a strange kid at the heart of it.

It's this time of the year again. This time I will start spooky story times earlier. This is a short story from the Vampirella magazine, issue 8. A bitter WW2 veteran is waiting for his wife to join him in England. War really changed him, and he's no longer a man he used to be. It's fairly standard story for horror anthologies but this one is more efficient and has better art than other ones like it - especially in the early days of Warren magazines. It's solid and perfect to get this spooky season started. It has a campfire story feel to it.

I was going through old horror anthologies at a comic shop about 15 years ago and I came across one that I've never found in any download. I can't remember the title, but it had the craziest story about two adventurers who were trying to find one specific girl in a harem whose "pussy kinda tickles." So these guys spend the entire night porking their way through the harem and just as I got to the part where the one guy found her, the shop owner told me it wasn't a library. Never did find out what series it was. Black and white, magazine format, and really bizarre.
>>41599 That sounds like something straight from the tail end of the B&W boom era. Probably some niche magazine that. Most material from that era has been lost to time. I never came across it, and I have a decent amount of scans of old comics.

It's been a while. Today's story is The Shrieking Man from Eerie #4. This is another Goodwyn script. It is illustrated by Ditko but he's using a style that's different from the ones he's known for. It looks very good and fits the script perfectly. The story focuses on Dr Mandel who runs an insane asylum, and a younger doctor Colbert who joins him. Over time Colbert becomes obsessed with curing a patient known only as shrieking man.

>>41643 Yeah, I've never come across a download for it either. Did a search for magazines from that era but didn't find it. It wasn't an outright porno mag like Penthouse Comix or whatever. It was horror or fantasy just incredibly uncensored. I'd love to find it again just to find out if the "pussy that tickles" was actually maggots in an undead or some kind of eldritch abomination in human form.

(745.99 KB 1192x1636 Collector's Edition 4.jpg)

It's time for another story. There was one from Vampirella, another one from Eerie, so it's only fair to have something from Creepy. Collector's Edition from issue #10 is one of the famous Warren stories. It follows a collector of occult antiques. He is trying to add very a rare tome to his collection. This is another Ditko and Goodwyn collaboration. Ditko's art is more in line with the style he used most often. It works very well for the story. He went an extra mile and included great etching on close-up panels. Goodwyn wrote a lot of good scripts but this one is among his best. It is a short story but the script manages to be clever and to include a lot without feeling rushed or crammed.

(565.89 KB 1180x1624 Thing of Darkness 4.jpg)

"Thing of Darkness" is another story from Creepy #10. It's a simple story that thrives off of the mystery of what the man on the metro tracks saw before he was found. It also neatly ties to real events from 1965. Goodwin is the one writing, as he was for many of them, and art is by Eugene Colan. He uses interesting diagonal panels. It's rare to see comic book artists use these well. Here there are used not only for action but for the mood too. Another interesting device is coloring the page gutter black for pages that take place in the dark and white for the ones in the light. It neatly ties with the themes of light and darkness in the story too.

(648.85 KB 1192x1628 Gargoyle 3.jpg)

(657.39 KB 1196x1620 Gargoyle 4.jpg)

Time for another story from Creepy. Gargoyle was published in issue #6 and reprinted numerous times in later issues. It's a good story about a driven alchemist obsessed with finding ways to turn ordinary materials into gold. He suspects that local sculptor might have occult knowledge and decides to extract it from him.

(649.15 KB 1188x1624 The Cask of Amontillado 3.jpg)

(734.21 KB 1188x1620 The Cask of Amontillado 4.jpg)

And yet another story from Creepy #6, as it was a strong issues with most stories being good to very good. The Cask of Amontillado is an adaptation of Poe's classic story of the same name. Goodwin and Crandall's adaptation expends upon it a bit with a prologue and an expanded ending.

(622.29 KB 1152x1661 The Invitation 03.jpg)

(637.29 KB 1152x1657 The Invitation 04.jpg)

Halloween is creeping up, so it's time for more spooky storytimes. The first one this year is the Invitation written, as many of them are, by Archie Goodwyn and with art by Manny Stallman. It was published in Eerie #1. The legend goes that the magazine was put together in a few day rush because Warren heard that someone else planned to use the "Eerie" name. It seems likely as this magazine is only 24 pages, with only three stories. The Invitation is a classic tale of someone in unfortunate circumstances desperately making a bad deal to survive in the moment. Writing is good, and most writers would struggle to make a story this dialogue heavy flow so well. Print quality does not do the art justice unfortunately. It looks good but some etching is tough to decipher.

(2.28 MB 2354x3056 Room With a View 2.jpg)

(2.31 MB 2354x3056 Room With a View 3.jpg)

Time for another story, this time it's Room With a View from Eerie #3. Written by Goodwin and art by Ditko. In general, stories Ditko illustrates are some of the best ones in the magazine. It makes me wonder if there was perhaps some Marvel method involved in making these, and Ditko contributed to the story.

(706.07 KB 1155x1608 Old Texas Road 4.jpg)

Today's story is Old Texas Road from Vampirella magazine #28 by Bruce Bezaire and Munes. It's a classic scary campfire story setup of people getting stranded in middle of nowhere. Art is very nice overall, although Bernie does look a bit goofy in some panels. >>57826 I was thinking more about Ditko basically being a co-writer

(1.53 MB 2354x3056 Act, Three! 4.jpg)

Act, Three! is a bit more light-hearted and comedic than most stories in Creepy. This one is from Creepy #18. Johnny Craig handled both writing and art. It's a neat story, reminiscent of EC magazines and Twilight Zone. It has old school paneling and art, expect for the first page. That panel of the doctor in the lab looks great.

(1.74 MB 2354x3056 Overworked 3.jpg)

I will post three stories today as I won'be be free tomorrow. The first one is Overworked from Creepy #9, written by Goodwin, and great art is by Wally Wood with Dan Atkins' help. Wondering about the Marvel method on Ditko's stories, I did some extra research. This story was the first one in the Marvel style that Goodwyn did. It's kind of a comic artist's slice of life with creepy elements sprinkled in. Goodwyn wrote it with Wally Wood in mind because Wood asked a story where he could draw a bit of everything - scifi, fantasy, monsters, and contemporary setting. Wally Wood unfortunately passed away four months after making this.

(1.10 MB 2354x3056 Out of Time 2.jpg)

(1.30 MB 2354x3056 Out of Time 3.jpg)

Out of Time is another pairing of Goodwin and a legendary artist. This time it's Alex Toth. This story is also from Creepy #9, and an interesting use for time travel premise. Another one from this year that has Twilight Zone or Outer Limits vibe, with extra appeal of Toth's bold art - especially the first page.

(1.51 MB 2354x3056 Brain Trust 2.jpg)

(1.38 MB 2354x3056 Brain Trust 3.jpg)

The last story for today is "Brain Trust" from Creepy #10. Story by Archie Goodwin, art by Torres. I like the art quite a bit, especially the dark pages and hatching, although some panel layout could be improved a little bit. Premise-wise it's a bit of a throwback to one of the old EC comics premises but taken in a more interesting direction.

>>57867 That's it, at lest until November 1st perhaps. If time allows, I will post a lighter story or two. Happy Halloween!
