You fuckin people...
Hot take: I actually like Volumes 4 & 5 for what they are. The animation quality is better (minus fight scenes... mostly.), and while the former can mostly be described as "The Gang walks a lot", I actually sort of like that. Like, they're on their own, trudging through Mistral, with Ruby and JN
PR learning to work together since the main girl are all split up, through this new continent that's just littered with death towns and spoopy Grimm. It's a neat little idea. Also, Qrow is best boy.
I didn't even hate all of Volume 6? I thought The Apathy was pretty cool, and I liked how everyone was pretty much tired of Ozpin's shit at that point. I didn't hate the basic concept of Volumes 7 & 8. RT just fucked it all up
so bad that any potential it had sort of went down the drain. Ironwood made too much sense so they had to have him go crazy and start killing people to justify everyone turning against him. Also, they crippled my beautiful Aryan snow
bunny Winter and Penny WHY THE FUCK DID THEY KILL PENNY AGAIN AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Basically, my tolerance for trash is higher than most peoples' ITT. Maybe I'm less harsh on it because I already expected everything after V3 to be garbage, so my expectations were already so low that anything that wasn't objective shit was a pleasant surprise. At best, I was just apathetic to a lot of it. Some parts were so "oh shit nigger what are you DOING" tier baffling that I couldn't help but smile and just run with it. It was weird.
Volume 9 taking place in Not!Alice In Wonderland was fucking BIZARRE and I wish I was still into the show when it released just so I could see peoples' reactions to it in real time. I'll be honest, the first half of it was just boring and it annoyed me to death because I saw it as pointless filler, but I actually kind of found myself getting into it in the second half for just how weird it was. Jaune becoming a grizzled old guy with PTSD while the girls were asleep was kind of cool, and I actually really liked seeing Ruby become progressively more depressed and anxious until she just snapped and got bullied into killing herself. I think the show in general would've benefitted from going off the rails like that more often. Like, I can't argue whether it was good or not, but it was certainly something. Ruby going off at Blake and Yang was cathartic, too.
But I digress. Anyway, Dire (I assume) is right, Weiss was better as a spoiled racist, and she became much less interesting after Volume 3 (Minus 9, I actually sort of liked how she became the "straight man" in 9), and Blake was never particularly interesting IMO. Depressed Ruby is best Ruby, and Yang is...
Okay, another hot take, but I actually started to like Yang waaaay more in Volume 4 and 5 because she got BTFO'd by Nice Guy Adam and became this timid shut-in before being redeemed and turning into a badass with a motorcycle, but then she started lezzing out with Blake and became super boring again. Lesbians fucking suck lmao.
