opinions on Georgism? Anonymous 03/13/2020 (Fri) 04:30:41 Id: f65ca2 No. 2082

"Georgism, also called geoism[2] and single tax (archaic), is an economic ideology holding that while people should own the value they produce themselves, economic value derived from land (often including natural resources and natural opportunities) should belong equally to all members of society.[3][4][5] Developed from the writings of the economist and social reformer Henry George, the Georgist paradigm seeks solutions to social and ecological problems, based on principles of land rights and public finance which attempt to integrate economic efficiency with social justice.[6][7]

Georgism is concerned with the distribution of economic rent caused by natural monopolies, pollution and the control of commons, including title of ownership for natural resources and other contrived privileges (e.g. intellectual property). Any natural resource which is inherently limited in supply can generate economic rent, but the classical and most significant example of land monopoly involves the extraction of common ground rent from valuable urban locations. Georgists argue that taxing economic rent is efficient, fair and equitable. The main Georgist policy recommendation is a tax assessed on land value. Georgists argue that revenues from a land value tax (LVT) can be used to reduce or eliminate existing taxes (for example, on income, trade, or purchases) that are unfair and inefficient. Some Georgists also advocate for the return of surplus public revenue to the people by means of a basic income or citizen's dividend."

thoughts?

So I take it Georgism is responsible for property taxes as they currently are?

I mean personally, I'm kind a curious about Georgism but never read enough of it to understand it. It came off like a novelty tbh.

Unironic geolibertarian here. I don't really browse this board that much cause everyone here is an ancap. It's not wrong for them to think this way, and I do get where they're coming from, but I do wish that a board called /liberty/ and not /ancap/ was a bit more diverse in it's topic of libertarianism.

Anyways, I'm not an anarchist, and I support georgism. I support having a minarchist government (small government whom's entire purpose is to ONLY provide police court and military, nothing more, nothing less!), and in order to fund this small government, we have a SINGLE tax, the land value tax!

Georgism just makes sense to me. You can own and sell products as they're created with labor, but since land wasn't made by anyone, why should anyone be able to own it? The land value tax is the most "fair" taxation, and it's the one I think less people will have a problem with. It certainly beats the income tax!

You do you, fam. I'll just say that security was always to a great extent private throughout history, so it always cracks me up how minarchists talk about private police being some wacky extreme utopian idea which is too dangerous to implement, when in fact the government monopoly on security is the more recent invention. As for taxes, I'd argue that the most "fair" tax is subjective, and people should be able to choose who taxes them and to what extend, which is why the government's monopoly on jurisdiction is a bad idea.

Well you're a minarchist so that makes more sense than an anarchist georgist. How do you prevent this tax system from becoming abusive and how do you survey the value of the land? Is you land tax different than modern property taxes?

>land wasn't made by anyone
Tell that to the Netherlands.
Americans think praising tyranny means that they will be safe from the police state, but no one is safe in a police state. Even dictators can be toppled. http://f2bbs.com/bbs
