Digimon having a single set evolutionary line was mostly an anime invention (even then, it had some variation, like SkullGreymon and Megidramon) and in some cases they brought unrelated Digimon that already existed into an evolutionary "line" despite them not being very similar. Almost all the games still had Digimon with multiple options for evolution, though a lot of them handled the mechanics differently.
