Genuine question Anonymous 04/23/2025 (Wed) 05:06:55 No. 43 >>80
What makes a game valid for this type of genre? For example, Deltarune has this mechanic were you can "recruit" monsters if You are friendly, and later interact with them in your castle And in Card Games like Yu Gi Oh, once You get the card the monster will obey your orders, like building your own army Does these count as capture/tame games?
Deltarune doesn't because those monsters don't join your party. You need to be able to use those you recruit in battle for it to count. I think card games are a grey area. They have the aspects of a mon game, like the customization, and the somewhat disposable monsters you fight with are the same you fight against. But they're card games. While we are on this subject, there is a difference between monster collection games and monster raising simulators. One is a JRPG, and the other is a raising simulator. I will die on the hill that shit like pokemon are not monster raising games.
>>45 >You need to be able to use those you recruit in battle for it to count hmm i get what you say. Well it kind of happens since in ch 2 Noelle joins your party and is usable, maybe that mechanic is happening in next chapters (or i'm just too hopeful) >Card Games are in grey area So... A Yu Gi Oh thread here is possible kek >Pokémon are not raising games Well evolution for some pokes involve friendship and lvl up, that counts i think?
>>60 Noelle's just an optional party member. If you can grind and get like 6 of her then it would count. >pokes involve friendship and lvl up They need to be able to get sick and die. That shit is just normal JRPG mechanics. When I say raising sim I mean shit like Monster Rancher. Stress, weight, and age are things you need to keep in check and in consideration.
Trying to boil it down to an exact formula feels like a "featherless biped" situation, but I think the most important thing is that the game primarily revolves around collecting and raising creatures to engage in the primary mechanic. In most cases, that's RPG battling, but I think a game like Palworld, where you could argue that base building is the main gameplay mechanic, still obviously counts as a creature collector because you need to collect creatures to do it. There also needs to be some kind of mechanic involved in collecting the creatures, like throwing Pokeballs or demon negotiation or the like, otherwise it doesn't feel like you're collecting them and they're just party members. Chrono Cross and Suikoden aren't creature collectors, they're just games with a lot of optional party members. But a lot of this is "knowing it when you see it." I don't consider Dragon Quest V to be a "creature collector" even though it meets all of the criteria because it doesn't FEEL like one to me. Being able to throw catgirls into your base panel to recruit them in Disgaea doesn't make it a creature collector. A lot of it's subjective. Like, I don't think anyone would say Monster Rancher doesn't belong here despite it being a totally different genre like >>45 says.
technically shit like Persona 5 would fit the definition set by >>62 and >>45 since you can recruit "monsters" in battles through negotiating with them, and can also use "monsters" in battles
>>66 Persona is just SMT, but for a wider audience, isn't it? So it would be one because SMT is the first one. Depending on who you ask.
>>68 another layer of confusion on what actually defines the things for a game to belong here
>>69 Hehe 69 I think that's really easy to get. Persona = SMT and SMT = monster game, so Persona = monster game. What's confusing about it?

>>70 Well the Persona series is more of a Spin off rather than direct sequels, and Persona 5 is kind of it's own Spin off at this point too Think of it like Pokémon and Pokémon Dungeon, yeah both are Pokémon, but one is tamer style and the other is role play, too different in concept
>>66 Persona's a spinoff of SMT, so it does share mechanics. But Personas are treated like equipment rather than companions. There's not much difference between them and the Espers of Final Fantasy VI.
>>43 (OP) There's lots of edge cases. I feel like we need a to collect the ones that aren't debatable to find their commonalities. >Clear cut Mon games Pokemon Digimon Monster Rancher Tamagotchi Yokai watch Palworld >Debatable SMT Medabots Dragon quest V Deltarune >Certainly not Princess maker Final fantasy Fire emblem Animal crossing Any others?
>>80 >Clear cut Mon games >Tamagotchi >Debatable >SMT >Deltarune Tamagotchi is so completely different I can't see how its in clear cut. Shin Megami Tensei's difference from Pokemon is that you need to sway the demon you want into joining your party. Deltarune "recruited" monsters are a checkmark on the background. There's no taking care of them or bringing them to the fight, you only get a few extra lines of dialog.

>>80 Where's Dragon Quest Monsters you fuck? >>82 Digimon is literally Tamagotchi with fighting, so I can see the logic of why it's there. Also, SMT has fusion too.
>>80 >Any other? Well yes along with some modifications >Clear cut Mon games +SMT +DQMonsters >Debatable +Yu Gi Oh +Metal Slug Attack Reloaded +Persona >Certainly not +Deltarune (At least as it is now, because like other anon said, there is a difference between monster collecting and monster raising) +Build your army games (PATAPON, Plants vs zombies, TBOI) +TES Saga but specially Skyrim
>>83 Is Tamagotchi still popular?

I found this game on F95, played it and it was a total clickbait, cute designs tho, i really wish there was a game that mixed mon mechanics and H
Ok i think this pretty much summarizes the genre in 3 subgenre that can also be mixed
>>174 No collector can easily be applied to Pokémon as well. I'm never going to call Deltarune a monster game. And where is Monster Raiser? If you replaced Tamer with Raiser and then shifted all the green blocks to the left, erasing Deltarune and filling the leftmost slot with Monster Rancher, I could agree that.
(48.50 KB 733x781 -MON GENRE-.png)

>>175 Ok what about this? 5 main genres with 1 sub genre and can also influence on games from other genres and vice versa
>>182 What is the distinction between Tamer, Catcher, and Collector? Raising is obvious because it's about pet sim mechanics, and I imagine Battler is about foregoing an adventure to just make lizards kill each other in depth. If you are gonna make a graph, you should choose words that make this stuff obvious.
>>197 BATTLER and CATCHER are pretty much the same thing with minimal differences, thats why they born from the same point Collector just focuses on collecting/unlocking the monsters The words are how the genre is called, can't change it. Thats why i added an example of those genres
>>200 I think it would be a good idea to just slap a little descriptor on each of the blue subgenre tags. No layman is going to understand this. I can tell because I played 6 of those games, and I'm struggling. What really separates Tamers from Catchers? What is the factor keeping SMT from being a Tamer? If battlers and catchers are pretty much the same thing, why not combine the sub-categories and axe one label? Do those minimal differences warrant separating them? What even are they? And as a fuck that thinks Deltarune shouldn't be here how and why is Cult of the Lamb on this thing? If it's not getting deleted, it should at least be tethered to the other genre block.
