Hi /o/, /pol/lac/k/ here. With all of these BLM roadblock-type "protests" going on, I think it's probably not a bad idea to invest in a grill guard of some sort. I currently drive a 2001 Toyota Rav4 2.0L FWD. What would I need to look to protect most in the event that I need to break through a human wave? Would a simple bar coming up from the undercarraige to cover the radiator be sufficient, or should I get something a bit more substantial? I'm not overly worried about replacing my headlights; they're pretty cheap assemblies.
Or would I even need one if I'm just sort of "pushing" through a crowd at 5-25mph?

Your best bet would be to get one as wide as the bumper and weld blades to it, or just get a larger (mostly taller) vehicle so you can run them over. The best way to avoid damage to the vehicle in all cases is to go as fast as possible.

That will give them a chance to try to jump in/hit you/throw something in the car. Even if you don't mind some damage to your car, you definitely don't want the airbag going off during this. So yes, you should get some kind of sturdy protection for the front end.

I work at an autoparts store and these Iron Cross bumpers seem sturdy enough to nigger mow. And you can always do the carmageddon thing of just throwing spikes on it. I'd say learn to weld and get to work.

My car is from the 80s and I jumped a creek and landed bumper-first on the other side and the airbags never went off.

The impact was at around 15-20mph I think, so I should be okay with running through crowds of chimps. Also, OP here. I didn't realize how fucking slow this board is. Holy shit.
