>>12595 Make sure that thing does not get in hands of terrorists. They already have plenty of Toyotas, imagine what would happen if they had CAS modified BMWs. >>12595 >>12605 What's CAS?
>>12621 In war terms CAS is Close Air Support, it includes the glorious A-10 with BRRRRRRT and some other aircraft designed to deliver accurate blows to ground. In cars… i dunno.
>>12621 >>12629 In BMW terms, CAS is Car Access System, it's the module under the dash that handles the ignition key, starting the car, door locks, glove box, etc.

>>11962 >>11963 update, the thing runs okay for the most part. had some major sludge, third oil change, with some seafoam added, so far and the fucker still turns the oil very opaque within 15 mins of running. hopefully this post fixes this thread.
>>13008 Did you change the oil filter?
>>13015 it doesn't have one.
>>13017 As in, it's missing or there just isn't one? Did you do a proper, thorough cleaning? Maybe something died inside it? All I can think of to do at this point is to dismantle it and see what's going on inside.

>>13021 it's a cheap lawn mower that uses an oil slinger for internal lubrication, you just dump the oil out the filler neck after so many hours of operation. no oil filter. the issue is it had the typical "run it till it dies/can't start it" owners that didn't give a shit, leaving it outside, NEVER cleaning it, ignorance with proper oil changes, running the drive wheels bald, etc. it's a good way to learn some shit and make a tiny bit of money.
(2.00 MB 3242x1848 IMG_20170414_123045.jpg)

Horrifying. In an Econoline, and not even on a back cylinder that's easily accessible when you take out the dog house, it was on #2.
>>13030 I see. Is a complete rebuild difficult on small engines like that? >>13031 How was that even sparking? Or was it?
>>13032 If you look carefully, you'll notice the problem wasn't the lack of spark, is that the plug is smashed after rattling around in the plug hole after it came out of the head *with the timesert*
(79.78 KB 720x960 1410452506577.jpg)

>>13032 not really, most of the time you don't need to go that far and if you do it may not be worth it financially depending on the problem. for example a new cam belt on some of these require a partial tear down but the part is cheap. on my main mower the biggest issue with it when I picked it up was the valve clearance was WAY out, like 2-3mm out of spec when the spec was 0.2mm. all the other issues were crap anyone could avoid, oil change, air filter, spark plug and it's clearance, cleaning the deck, new blade chuck. I did a(n almost) full rebuild on a little 23cc G23LH for my scooter and that came in at ~170USD and it was only that high because I went overkill. not really worth it but it was a fun project basic maintenance is seriously overlooked a lot of the time on these cheap products, no one cares when the string trimmer dies because there's a brand new one at walmart for $69. then someone will pick it up off the side of the road, clearance the magneto and it'll fire right up. true story
>>13035 >the plug is smashed I can see that, that's why I asked how it was sparking. So the injectors were just spraying fuel into the cylinder and then it was going out the exhaust? >>13036 Interesting.
>>13038 You're still not seeing it! The plug came out of the threads in the head, along with the thread repair that had already been done, the pressure broke the ignition coil and every time there was a compression stroke, the plug and broken coil were being thrown around. as I said, it wasn't a problem of not having spark, because even if the spark had been able to fire, it wasn't even in the cylinder anymore, and the cylinder had no compression.
(31.47 KB 361x446 stupid.jpg)

>>13051 I don't know what "thread repair" looks like, but I get what you're saying now.
(17.32 KB 263x336 Helicoil2.jpg)

>>13052 If the threads rip out of the head, the idea is, you overbore the hole and thread it for a special insert, screw the insert in and hit it with a special tool to expand the top section so it grips in the aluminum. Then you can just screw a new plug into the insert as the inside is the same thread as what ripped out of the head. I was SUPER lucky in that it was just very badly installed and the insert just unscrewed out of the head, the overbore threads were fine and I was able to install a new insert. If that hadn't been the case the head would have needed to be over-overbored and an oversized insert, and it would have needed to be done in one of the worst possible spots on the engine.
>>13053 Turns out I wasnt super lucky, shit popped off again, this time taking the rest of the threads. Shit's borked now.
>>13075 F. That's too bad. What's your plan now?

>>13537 Any work on the front of an A4 engine requires removing the bumper cover and putting the front unit in "service position" which means removing the bumper bar and hooking the front unit on long bolts so it can be slid forwards to make space between the fans and the engine, but on a big head and timing set R&R job like this, it's MUCH easier to get it completely off.

>>14505 Ok, two questions right away: >Why do you have a SUV with gasoline engine? >Do you know what does that to a sparkplug? The guy said he was just driving along on the interstate when his RR axle ejected from the axle shaft, with the wheel, brake drum, and hub. He also said the road noise was so loud that he didn't notice anything until he saw sparks (???), and that because of that he walked "all over" trying to find it (the assembly) after he stopped. I have no idea how it bent 90 degrees… It must have come out slowly.
>>14884 I'm no mechanic expert but wtf
>>14885 >>14884 Nothing it surprising about that. The road noise wasn't bad, the axle bearing was failing and making all that noise. The shaft bent because the friction in the failed bearing heated it to what was likely a glowing heat and softened the shaft until it bent and pulled out of the retainer. See that gray section? that's where it was heated, it's super clean because as it bent it broke off the oxide layer.
>>14886 Oh thanks, this sure helped me understand. Sounds logical.
>>12595 Diode blew?
No picture, but I had to deal with a Chevy Cruze from hell. Came in with a dead battery and a drive belt soaked in oil. Check alternator, is OK, but belt is slipping, duh. Clean that shit up, let it run for >30 minutes. Oh look, both VVT solenoids seals are bad. nice, easy repair. Guy leaves with the car, the next day he calls, he got a low oil pressure message in the dash, car is dropped off at the shop again. Open hood, it's even more of an oily mess than it was before, add oil, start it up, the turbo seals are done, it's blowing out smoke so thick you can't see through it. The oily mess is perplexing, but as it it, it needs a turbo. Do the job, let it run, everything is good, test drive, oil all over the place. Turbo is boosting in the crankcase, oil is spewing from every orifice. Remove PCV tube, check valve is missing, have to replace entire intake manifold. I have my doubts about the valve cover as I've heard a slight whistle from the valve that's on it. Replace everything, test drive, STILL AN OILY MESS, but much less than before. Remove crank damper, the front seal is dry and cracked. Meanwhile, that car almost took one of my eyes, as a brittle coolant fitting decided to literally explode with burning hot coolant while I had my face over the engine after a test drive. I was saved by my safety glasses. Fuuuuuuuck
>>15038 You wore protective glasses while working in working engine bay? Wow, so those people do exist… I am not implying anything negative, just suprised.

>>15039 I wear prescription glasses, and I wrecked my last pair using them for work, so the last time I got new ones, I had them make a set of safety glasses too, which I use only for work, I mean, if I'm gonna use a pair for work, might as well have some decent coverage and shatter resistance, and some 3M frame with polycarbonate lenses are cheaper to replace than regular prescription frames and lenses. >>15214 >>15215 We wish, we all wish… For a medium sized garage and a handcrank crane.
>>15218 >>15220 I was kidding, no way do I expect anyone to undertake something like this on a hobby or DIY basis. Mostly, I was just hyped about my first cab removal. Things went entirely better than anticipated, the only snag being the two front-most cab bolts, which I had to cut because they were seized. The engine came out surprisingly well too, and again, just one snag, in that it couldn't be rotated, to I had to pull it off of the trans just enough to fit an open ended wrench in to unbolt the torque converter. It was my first cab off, my first powerstroke R&R and with those snags and the fact it was a POS truck that was bought wholesale not running, so there were a few bugs to diagnose and fix once it was running, like an open circuit on the generator control circuit between the PCM and alternator, broken steering angle sensor drive pins on the clockspring, a leaky o-ring at the lower rad hose quick connect, oh and repairing a crushed outlet on the charge air cooler, I hit book time on the R&R, and the entire POS was out the door in 20 hrs. Feels good man.

>>15298 Wew, that camerawork turned out way worse than i expected.
>>15298 Does not start is a terribly vague statement. No crank? Slow crank no start? Normal crank no start? Fast crank no start? Crank and tries to start but fails? Crank start and stall?
>>15321 Fuel pump running pos for 10 seconds. At first fast crank no start. Crank for 5 seconds, turn the key to position where fuel pump is runing, no ignition. Wait 20 seconds. Medium crank, repeated 3 times. During the first low crank i just called a friend to help me get the thing bumpstarted. And even then a single start and stall. A stall from a running engine in gear that could accelerate and work with pedal pressed. (stalled the moment i let the pedal go out of gear)
(724.43 KB 1920x1080 Untitled.png)

Currently it's charging for the night, but we will see what hthe next cold morning brings. Weather promises to get even more fun.
>>15323 Well at least it doesn't sound like it's a battery or fluids issue. Try disconnecting the ECT sensor, if it's not reading the right temp for the cold engine, it's not going to give it enough startup enrichment for it to start/stay running on it's own until the engine temp picks up. If that mazda is like the other 99% of car, an open circuit in the ECT will make it read below -40C, so at worse you're gonna get a bit more startup fueling.
(5.33 KB 535x359 15-1-12.png)

>>15328 Also, that audi probably has the K-jetronic injection, so cold start is simply done with a thermo-timer switch and an extra injector on the intake plenum. It's brute force solution.

Another cold morning, another jolly adventure. I even got out of bed an hour earlier for this. Mazda was charging for the whole night. Now it had 2 fast cranks in morning, the last medium crank popped some exhaust fumes, but engine did not pick itself up from the ~400 rpm the starter made. Temperature -25 and windy, window washing fluids were frozen, oil pressure warning light went out only after good 5 minutes of warming up. Audi still started flawlessly. Fun fact: when warm, it (Mazda) idles at 1.5krpm humming, while very cold it idles at sub-500rpm and sounds like a Harley >>15330 Only the corpse of that part of my soul that died the moment i pulled out the 30yr old synthetic inside coating and found water and mud that has been rusting the boot for god knows how long. I also tried pulling codes yesterday, that ended with a blown out led. Will buy replacements today, try again. Also found out that despite the connector not having a cover, it works. Followed the instruction in video. Got a warm garage for cold nights for an uncertain amount of time. At least a week, no longer than until spring kicks in. Also i suspect that fuel flowback valve is dead. The fuel pump is supposed to only get the pressure up and stop (when not started). But it just keeps on runing. This picture is about as good as my camerawork gets. Because it's not taken with shitty phone front camera (back camera is dead for mine)

>>15322 I know I'm a few weeks late but I've been working on an old RAM van that has been poorly maintained.
