Looking to get a bike once I move down south in about 3-4 months. PA roads are just to shit to really get a good ride.

What bikes would you guys recommend for a beginner? I've been looking at the Honda CBR250R and the Grom so far. Not that tall so I think I would have trouble with a larger bike.

Just bought a 96 magna from a friend. It's my 2nd bike. My first was a GSXR.

It's taken a long time to get used to. The different riding posture and handling is crazy. Also the size is really intimidating.

Well yeah, 5990 for a kick start-only, 5 speed, rear drum, air cooled 400cc thumper is stupid expensive.

Fuck everything

Ohwell. I still have a lot of fun with pic related. Which is an ok starter bike (my first bike) if you don't mind paying for a new faired sportbike. Single disc front brake has a spongy feeling which can make stopping at anything faster than low speeds pretty nerve wracking if you're not used to it. And you need to rev it into the 6k-8k rpm range to get what little power it has out of it.

Did anyone learn to ride bikes and get licensed before they learned to drive?

there are bikes with a saddle height in the 26 inch range, so unless you've got dwarfism, you should be fine.
>>3345
What about bikes like in the OP. I'm considering getting a bike, but i'm a manlet at 162.5 cm short

>>3367
>>3368
Thanks bikefags, anything else i should consider before getting one?
>>3374
>Anything else to consider

Don't get a cheap helmet thinking you'll eventually upgrade to something better, just bite the bullet and get a good one from the get go.

By the time you've worked your way up into Arai or Shoei territory, you'll have spent that money and more working your way up through the range.

Also, if you plan to do a lot of freeway and/or long distances, start looking into getting custom earplugs molded with acoustic filters. Even the best helmets with have about 85db of noise going at 60mph, sustain that for a few hours and it will fuck with your ears and head. You can ride comfortable, relaxed and alert (and thus safe) for much longer with good earplugs.

Too much windscreen to be a dualsport
Too much cast wheels to be a dualsport
Too much street tires to be a dualsport.
Too little distance between the front tire and mudguard to be a dualsport.

Wikipedia might say it's a dualsport, but juxtaposing it to other yamaha models from both categories tells a different story.

I've gotten very interested in getting a bike. For my first, I'm heavily inclined to go for pic related, a suzuki tu250X. y/n?
>>8619 I know it's been said that a Yamaha SR400 is expensive for what it is, but I still think it's a better idea than a TU250X. For reference, my riding school had one or two of those, and no one could endure riding them, not even the smallest girls.

I'm looking at a Yamaha XS750 with a horrendous looking aftermarket seat. She needs tires, battery, carb clean/rebuild, and possibly brake work. That is in addition to a regular tuneup for a bike that has been sitting for a while. Owner wants $650 for it. Wants to get it out of his garage as he just bought a brand new Harley. My mechanical experience is a CDQAR/QASO on CH-53E for 2 years and a general F/E tech for 4 years. I own my own set of decent quality tools and torque wrenches (Kobalt). Is this a good buy?
>>8760 Can't speak for the quality of the bike itself, but pretty much all japanese motorcycles are Easy Mode as far as mechanical expertise for fixing them. As a comparison, something like a Mercedes W123 is Hard Mode (read: not Dante Must Die Mode)
Thinking about getting a HONDA GROM for my first bike.. but I feel it might be to small for cars to notice me?? Should I or should I not??? I dont need/want a sports bike, other bikes I been looking at were dualsports. But new ones cost to much. I know you can get solid dualsports for like 2k but I was wondering if Groms are too small to be seen.
>>8783 While a grom seems small, it's not significantly smaller than another bike, and by that I mean, cagers typically scan the road for other cars and trucks, so any object much smaller than a car has a higher chance to get overlooked, yes a grom is a small motorcycle, but it's still closer to a motorcycle than a bike for example. Visibility is a risk that all motorcyclists face, if you're that worried about it just get hi-vis gear.
>>8784 I was planing wearing high Viz gear anyways tbh. Though I heard white helmets are seen better.

I really like the look of the older Jap bikes. However, I like something that runs well on the road today. Is an SV650 too much for a newbie? I really like the naked look. By the way, searching for "naked bike" on youtube is a mistake.
>>8853 Eh, it's sort of like having a Lotus Elise for your first car. You either get used to its acceleration the hard way, persevering every time you make a mistake, or you work your way up from the bottom. You ever ridden anything with guts before, like 250cc or higher? If the last thing you rode was a moped then a bike like that really isn't for you just yet.
>>8854 The most I've ridden is dirt bikes. I guess I have to work my way up. Mainly looking at the CBR250R right now.
(25.74 KB 480x360 jaOBzTJB7yc.jpg)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaOBzTJB7yc >>8856 I'd consider the Suzuki GS500. Just as easy for a new rider as a Ninja 250, older japanese looks like you want, reliable, cheap on the used market, good gas mileage, and really easy to fix yourself as its pretty simple mechanically. Pretty much the most modern you can get while still retaining older looks and not shoving a computer down there, especially for something that's beginner friendly.

I'm not planning on going fancy with my first bike. I want something small and cheap, that'll last me a long time. Anything that fits the bill?
>>9569 Kawasaki Ninja 250 Kawasaki Ninja 300 Kawasaki Eliminator 125 Kawasaki KLX250S Yamaha tw200 Yamaha Virago 250 Yamaha R3 Yamaha SR400 Honda Rebel 250 Honda CBR 125 Honda CB250 Honda CBR250 Honda Grom Suzuki DR200SE Suzuki DRZ400sm Suzuki GS500/550 KTM RC 125/390 With that many options you're really gonna have to ask what kind of riding you want to do, especially since you didn't even say what class of bike you're looking for (sports, dual sport, cruiser, etc.) What I will say though is that unless you think you'll rarely/never ride on the highway/freeway than you'll want at least a 250cc motorcycle. Otherwise I gotta say that the Honda Grom is pretty much THE DEFINITION of "small and cheap motorcycle", especially in the size department. The thing is like a road legal pit bike and I hear its super fun to thrash around when you aren't lusting for speed.
>>9578 Ah, I guess I should have been more specific. I'm in it for transportation and weekend rides more than sporting. Thus I'll be looking for a standard or a crusier. I'm most likely going to be riding on highways, probably not when I just start, though.
>>9592 In that case than I'd go for either the Virago 250, the SR400, the Honda Rebel 250, the Honda Rebel 250 Nighthawk, the Suzuki GS500 or the Suzuki GS550. The first two of those are probably going to be harder to find and more expensive, though. Just do your research on those and get a chance to sit on them if you can to see what feels right.
>>9578 >tfw half of these aren't sold in my country and/or instead they sell a shittier underpowered version. I'd kill for a Grom, heck i'd even settle with a CBR 125 as my starter.
So I want to get into motorcycling and I'm pretty set on getting a Honda grom, but I'm a bit strapped for cash. Should I save and get a brand new one or are they okay to buy secondhand?
>>9659 Secondhand is usually preferable, actually. Buying a brand new motorcycle is almost as big of a waste of money as buying a brand new car. It's a Honda so you know it'll be fine
>>9660 Cool thanks for the reply. Where would you recommend looking and what should I look out for when buying it used? I'm a bit weary about buying used since I was boned over once, and I don't have much motoring knowledge so I'm afraid of being ripped off.
(34.16 KB 480x360 iKXc_Vfusyk.jpg)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKXc_Vfusyk >>9661 Craigslist first and foremost. As for what to look out for, I'd recommend checking out some guides on Youtube for that since there's quite a bit to keep in mind. In my experience, no one video has covered everything. Things I know off the top of my head >never buy when its dark, whether that be in cloudy weather or literally at night >make sure the VIN numbers match up >if there's horizontal (not vertical) scrapes along the body than that means the bike was in a crash of some sort. Other scrapes and scratches just come with the territory of used beginner motorcycles since most people end up dropping their first bike at some point >stay far away from salvage titles unless you're buying it for parts (which you aren't, obviously) >if the bike isn't running, don't force yourself to buy anything beyond your comfort level as far as fixing problems go >make sure to look at the tires to see how worn out they are. If they have little to no tread left than you can use this as a bargaining chip for haggling Thankfully, motorcycles are relatively simpler than cars so there's less stuff to look out for. Since you said you're strapped for cash, I just want to throw in a friendly reminder to make sure that you have enough money for gear, classes/exams, and insurance as well. Other than what I've embeded, I also find that this video on how to haggle is pretty useful for someone like me that isn't used to that kind of thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEz8j-qIo9k
>>9662 Thank you mate, capped for future reference. A lot of people have discouraged me from getting a bike, their argument being that it's dangerous. I don't feel like I'd be totally unprepared as I've rode quad bikes before (I mean, they have similarities) but this is totally something I've at least got to experience. Hell I might find that after doing my CBT that I don't even like riding bikes, but I think this is something I can really get into. Again, thanks for the advice, I'll check back in after a few months when I actually buy one. Any other tidbits of advice you can offer? I know how to drive on the road but what should I avoid/keep cautious about while on a bike?

>>2141 Me again. So it's the end of My Vacation 2016, and I've come to a conclusion: I'm probably going to sell my FZ-09 next spring. Why? Mostly because of the way I ride, and my geographical location. You see, I don't like to take long trips, I like to do shit that I can turn around in a day. Unfortunately, I live in a place where everything is spread out and if I want to go anywhere I have to dump that shit on the highway for hours, which I hate, and there's only so much to ride locally before doing it all over again. Also, when I'm active on the bike, I'm fine, I can ride all day, but on the highway, doing nothing, not moving, fucks me up, it's like my joints lock up, so even if I pile on 3 hours of highway to get to some nice riding, by the time I get there I'm too stiff to have fun. That's not the bike's fault, when I had a scooter I was like this, when I had my WR250X I was like this, and being like this with the FZ bums me the fuck out. Yesterday I gave it one great push and rode a 1000km day, going for a round trip to Ottawa, and when I came home last night, and still this morning, I'm fucked up, and worse, it's not like I had any great fun doing it, just highway highway highway highway highway…. FUCK.
>>10503 Touring bike maybe? Or you might just need a car for those long trips.

May also try a naked bike, changing jobs so no more long ass highway commute, fairing may no longer be necessary
>>10503 You are a candidate for one of those adventure bikes… V-strom 1000, lots of torque, comfortable on highway, decent in the twisties. Not very sexy though, unfortunately
>>8853 The acceleration isn't insane. Gearing is not too aggressive in stock form. Easy to ride and gets more fun the better your skills. one of the best beginner bikes and value for money.
(789.32 KB 4000x2667 Yamaha-T7-Concept-action-07.jpg)

>>10897 If there is to be no <400cc sumo, the T7 which was shown at EICMA strikes me as a good idea… only swap that front wheel for a 17 inch and fit 80/20 tires like the distanzias I had just put on my WR250X when it got stolen.
So what is a good second bike to move up to from a Bandit 250? I'm a LAMSfag and I want to get a Vulcan S or similar kind of cruiser, but given my only experience is on my Bandit I'm not really sure what I should do next.
What is a good starter bike to also learn how to fix bikes on? Something older and simple. Anything under 100cc. I just want something I can use around town and learn how to fix engines on. I live in a high traffic area, so I don't want to go long distance on it. Say what you want about me wanting a slow bike, but that's what I think would be fine for me ( for now)
>>11167 Anything Japanese. No seriously, anything Japanese will fit the bill. Even the easiest to work on car will still be more difficult to work on than your average Japanese motorcycle. However, if you want something specific, the Honda Super Cub is the first thing I think of when I hear your criteria. >super cheap even when it was new >infamously bulletproof >simple construction >literally without exaggeration the best selling motor vehicle in the history of the world so you know you have a great aftermarket for parts >hipster chicks will be all over your dick
>>11169 Since I want to work on it I guess even finding a beater would be fine? Any clue what a fair price on these are? I'll keep it in mind though.
>>11170 I'm not an expert but according to this graph its anywhere from $1k-$2k which is cheap even by motorcycle standards. You might even be able to get one out of state and have it shipped to you if you find a seller willing to do that with you. https://motorcyclegraph.com/usa/honda/super-cub-50
>>11171 >>11171 Thanks for the info. I don't even have a permit or license for a bike yet. I figured I could fix one and learn on it. Could be a fun project.

>>13246 Looks like a fat midget
>>11167 if you go a bit over 100cc, there is a huge market of affordable 125cc bikes that are extremely simple in construction, with parts readily available from the manufacturers.

Reviving bread Just got my first bike and I'm looking for saddlebags. They need to lock and be rain resistant. What should I look at? More importantly, what should I avoid? Pic related, my new bike.
I managed to finally get my motorcycle license this summer. Too bad it was late summer and life in the Scandinavia is snow and rain, but I got a little bit of driving done. My first bike is a used Kawasaki ZX600 from 1999. It's pretty fun. This thread didn't really help stave off my craving for going out and riding.
>>14348 Northen yuropean too? Sweet. I plan on getting my bike license this winter, so as soon as the snow goes away i can pass the exams and spend the summer on my Minsk. Found an almost functional Minsk under some tent behind a barn. Owner just handed over the documents and said that it has something going on with fuel pump. It was kicking out blue smoke when i tried to start it, did not start though. That smoke looked hopefull though.
