>we asked Mazda: Why aren’t small displacement engines still a thing? The answer was simple. >“Making a piston costs about the same amount, whether it’s a big piston or a little one,” explained Mazda engineer Dave Coleman. “Boring a cylinder costs about the same whether it’s big or small. Casting and machining two three-cylinder heads costs almost twice as much as one four-cylinder head. Making four variable cam timing actuators costs exactly twice as much as making two. Six injectors costs 50 percent more than four.” >When you’re developing a car to a price, that overall price and profit is directly related to the amount it costs to build said car. Why build a V6 if you can engineer a four-cylinder engine with the same displacement and similar output at a lesser overall cost? >And to drive the point home even further, there’s not much practical point in building a V6, as they “take up more space than four-cylinders, making a bigger, heavier car,” continued Coleman. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2016/03/ask-editor-happened-small-displacement-v6s/ Seems four bangers are the future, well and truly. Pic kinda related, most powerful production four banger.
>>12262 It might be news in burgerland, but 4bangers are the present, the past and the future. Whole point of V6 or more is to say 'Haha, look at me, i have more power than you' Though V6s live twice as long as 4 cilinder engines. The junk with 3 or less cilinders break apart every 3 years because there is so much load on them
>>12264 Very small engines on light cars are very reliable as long as they are simple. Citroën 2CV and Renault 4L are unbreakable and have the smallest engines ever.
>>12265 And now think about the 'this uses only 3 pistons when low rev' technology in SUVs. What were they thinking?
>>12268 I don't know how bad it can be for engines tbh.
>>12268 Think about it. 3 pistons are doing the job made for 6, shile other 3 just sit there doing nothing. Even on low rev that is quite a load. I don't expect for their lifetime to be long. The more pistons are working, the less load they have to bear thus they have longer lifespan. I personaly think car manufacturers have a thing or two to learn from soviet tractors. >add water to fuel/air mixture Just do it, faggot. Don't pour cup of water in air intake. Add a pulverisator of some sorts there and drive for a while to see results. It will run so much better for same fuel consumption and revs. Because water particles expand in the fuel/air burning reaction, thus giving more pressure in the burning chamber, thus giving the engine more power. >manual electricity switches Nobody can explain this one, and i am not sure if modern tractors have them too, but here is a fact: they have seperate switch for all electronics. Sparkplugs, lights, starter, all can be toggled with one switch. Of course, lights etc have their own swithes, but they all obey the main switch. Massively increases the time you can leave the battery just sitting there without recharge On a funny note, can you change the starter and distributor wires on a mdern car so you can start the engine backwards? So it takes in air from exaust and blows it out of intake? And makes weird noise and has 4 reverse speeds? I remember that happening on a tractor, that was great fun.
>>12270 Depends on the load for these 3 pistons I guess. For the water part, I'm doubtful. Water corrodes iron and guess what, there's iron in engines. Also I read many articles against water in the fuel mixture anwering to tinfoil article.
>>12273 >Water corrodes iron Wrong. The ions dissolved in water can corrode iron. Salt water corrodes iron. distilled water does not. Case in point: Your exhaust gasses contain a lot of water because of combustion. HOW-FUCKING-EVER If you have a leakage and you get water pooling up in the intake, you could hydrolock your engine and bend your connecting rods. If water pools up on the intake valve, it can force its way past the seals and contaminate your oil, making it mayonnaise without any properties useful to your bearings. >>12270 You literally cannot overstress a piston by turning others off, especially since the turning off part happens only in low power states. If you have a 300hp car with a V6 and you turn off 3 pistons you're left with less than 150hp, let's say 100whp maximum because of friction losses. If you now use 50 whp to accelerate lightly, you're not going to overstress a piston running at 25hp with a maximum power output of 50hp, and if you punch the gas the other pistons turn right back on. The only bad thing about this is that it makes the engine needlessly complicated. >>12264 >The junk with 3 or less cylinders break apart every 3 years because there is so much load on them High relative load comes from small displacement and forced induction, not from the amount of cylinders.
>>12262 Lanz made 1 cylinder engines with up to 10L of displacement in post war germany. These engines are insanely relieable. Also bigger cylinders mean higher efficiency and cleaner combustion as well. That is one of many reasons why marine diesels are so efficient.
>>12415 What makes them impractical for cars? I have no idea how internal combustion engines work beyond how the explosions happen.
>>12416 1 cylinder engines cause ridiculous amounts of vibration and their output torque oscillates a fuckton, too. Makes for an uncomfortable drive.
>>12416 They shake your car a bit and run pretty rough at low rpm. 2-4 cylinders are balanced way better.
>>12415 >imagine a 10L single cylinder engine in a car >every time it does full cycle fthe car jumps up 10 centimeters from ground

>>12422 I think I'd rather just stick with a horse if that were the case.
>>12420 >>12421 I see. >>12422 I wasn't thinking of a single 10L cylinder. Maybe a single 2L, or two 1L or something like that.
>>12422 (checked) The drive mechanism on those things is pretty amazing, but they're the most sealed for life vehicles ever created and the manufacturer is completely unaccountable. Really, when a horse breaks you're better off shooting it and getting a new one.
>>12433 They also are limited in speed and upgrades. Their lifespan is limited by design to 20 years before failing, where you'll lose all investment to it. Clearly not the best vehicle available today.
>>12433 >>12435 But if you have 2 horses of different build levels (genders), you can get a third one for free.
>>12422 These engines where kind of weird. Starting involved heating up the cylinder head untill it glows. Then you had to pump fuel to the injector and set it for the correct spray pattern and injection. Then you removed the steering wheel and conected it to the crankshaft Then jou had to turn it manualy, I don´t know if it had a decompression system though. Good thing was, these engine can run on any burnable liquid from Acetone to old motor oil.
