I'm not a Subaru fan. If you end up with $2000 in the car and it runs/drives good. It will pay for itself in a year or two with nothing but maintenance and basic insurance. I was an auto tech for many years. I did the same thing you're doing many times and for many people.
I have a free car that was giving to me in 1999. It's a 1998 model. It needed nothing more than a full maintenance regimen done to it. I am still driving that car today, 20 years later. I have done nothing major to it but keep the service up and basic liability. The most I have done to this car for repairs was a radiator at 180,000 miles after a crack in the plastic tank, an A/C compressor at 200,000 miles, and now at 260,000 miles I am replacing the front down pipe due to a frayed flex coupler in the exhaust. All in all, I have probably spent $3000 keeping this car on the road for 20 years not counting the insurance, taxes, tags, and fuel. We all pay that no matter what we drive.
Parts are cheap, insurance is cheap, and taxes are really low on this car. Never take a car on expecting it to resell well to a niche ricer market. I own a Honda that used to be in that niche. People moved on and now I'm stuck with a good car that wouldn't sell for a $1000. I have almost $2500 in the repairs alone. It's a great back up car and fun in the mountains.
If you like the car and will use the car, fix it and drive it like you stole it. Fuck all the nay sayers.
