>Be 2015 >Be Toyota >Kill Scion due to paternal evolutionary convergence and shift in youth culture >Researches new approach to win over today's youth with updated and assimilated flagship car. >"Hmm" >"What are these may-mays the kids speak of?" 1 month later >"So which meme should we facelift OUR, totally NOT Subaru's GT86 to resemble???" >??? >"I got it!" Fast forward to March 2016 > "HEY YOUNG SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS" >"HEARD YOU LIEK MUDKIPS" Reception at New York Auto Show FRS Fans: ==JUST== Toyota: That's the spirit :^) . We'll base the 2nd gen 86 off that one XD.
what?
I like it, just wish the lines were sharper. That front end is a mess.
>>8643 In short, Toyota made the… 86 (Really?) , look like a goddamn Mudkip. >>8644 Ehh, I guess the new stock wheels are kinda neat. They need to stop hiring CalArts graduates to design these new damn Toyotas. Its round in all the wrong faces.
Is there really anything different between this and a BRZ besides the badge?
(128.06 KB 1000x1000 Pepe_rare.png)

>>8647 It's not even CalArts Grads Though they probably aren't helping. Automotive design is so chocked with Ped safety Which is fucking stupid and Fuel Efficiency standards Which wouldn't be an issue if we switched to a renewable fuel source or SOMETHING but that will never happen till we reach Mad Max/FUEL levels of fucked. Good looking cars are a thing of the past. >>8652 Nope. Same shit, Different badge, Badge Engineering at it's finest. As for OP, they clearly went with Pepe for the design inspiration Which is to say it looks like a fucking frog. And it probably has the worthless Boxer engine still.
(180.27 KB 1600x1055 Toyota-86-style-Cb-1.jpeg)

I don't get it. They had a good facelift already.
>>8655 Dont hate on the FA20. Toyota is just the Gaben of auto manufacturers, cant count to 300 HP. >>8663 I like it but its borderline Nissan 240z. Which is astounding, considering that Toyota insists on it being called an 86. If they wanted an 86, all they had to do was have made the early 2nd gen tC RWD. Looks much more like one than the FRS/BRZ/GT86/86 ever did.
(63.26 KB 400x274 Datsun_240Z_Concept.jpg)

>>8709 The Camry V6 probably could have been worked over to get 300 out of it NA. Or they could have just slaped a supercharger and called it a day. Also it's always kinda bugged me they keep trying to draw parallel to the AE86 when they have nothing in common. The AE86 was just a reworked version of the Corolla that had RWD. Sure it was more complex then that but it was little more then the flagship version of the most common car they made. Also they'll never make anything as sexy as a 240Z
(107.32 KB 1318x768 2016-Subaru-BRZ-price.jpg)

>>8710 It's also odd since I don't think many Americans not into anime or jap cars will even know about the old 86 since it's called the corolla here. I like the BRZ more.
>>8710 Why a V6? That would fug with the center of gravity, which I thought was bullshit, until I drove the "furs". A 6 Cylinder boxer engine on the other hand…would make for a knarly Supra reboot. >>8711 I expect BRZ sales to skyrocket while 86 fails because 1. BRZ facelift is minor and doesnt fuck up the front 2. 86 will be given a price spike, negating the main advantage the FRS had over the BRZ Which may lead to Toyota killing off its only RWD car and Subaru morphing the BRZ into a SVX2.
(106.85 KB 800x600 800px-SUBARU_EZ36_001.jpg)

>>8712 I was just going by what Toyota had on hand as powerful but already developed motor they still made. Though Subaru does make a Flat-six currently as well, though how much they'd want to share that is up for debate. But if they did turn the BRZ into the SVX2 then I could see them maybe elongating the chassis a bit to fit a Flat six and keep the four-pot as a base model, if they were smart. Still won't be as good as if they partnered with BMW for dat inline 6 goodness though.
>>8712 A V6 wouldn't fuck up the CoG by that much, the flat 4 is mounted fucking high in the chassis, the crank center is WELL above the axle line, where as a typical V or inline has the crank center much lower. Of course, if the crank center is higher, that means the transmission must also be mounted higher. Honestly, the Subaru engine is the only thing that turns me off of the 86. I want a car, not a self-propelled oil leak, Toyota should have gone with a ZR engine, pushed the output up to 200 (if that could be done with the FA relative to an FB, it would have been possible with a ZR), and slanted it a bit to the side to fit it under the hood.
(1.82 MB 3264x2448 20160403_170230.jpg)

>>8714 I was surprised how much the Subaru is. It's cheaper than a STI. I still like the STI/WRX more. >>8712 I might have this wrong, but is the new 86 and the BRZ the cars they made a deal on to make colab.
When the fuck will they bring back the actual Celica, and not just a shitty, unsubstantial refresh of the pigfat tC? I want muh sporty liftback/'hatchback-esque' dd, but I don't want to risk buying a Kia Forte Koup and possibly contract a numb driving experience.
>>8959 It really all ended when Toyota's cheat system was discovered in the 1995 WRC Season. With Toyota out of the WRC, the Celica was no longer a homologated racecar. Thus, they felt no need to keep it at the forefront of technology and power like the Evo, Impreza etc. When they came back, they used the Corolla instead. Then you got the shitty ZZT231 generation.
>>9012 I'm a casual rally fan, is it's popularity (as in the sport's) waning?
>>9012 >the shitty ZZT231 generation. It's not shitty, it's just not a Celica… They tried to make an Integra out of it.
>>9032 I agree, the GT-S is a pretty good Si killer, but any rally heritage has been sucked out of it. The tC reminds me of the ZZT231, but as you said, it's not a Celica. If they badged it as something else, it would have taken off.
>>9045 Really? The TC remind me of the non AWD ST16 to ST20 Celicas: FWD sorta sporty liftbacks with camry engines. I say this having owned a 1988 GT-S with T-VIS that kicked in yo.
>>9045 I see what you mean, but it just felt too heavy to me.
I saw my first 86 last week. Didn't even know they were out yet. What an ugly car.
>tfw toyota just can't make a good looking car, no matter what >tfw if you told them to make one at gunpoint you'd systematically slaughter all employees of toyota because they're physically incapable of making a good looking car and keeping it that way

>>9577 I've joked with my father that I think they have a contest to see how ugly they can make their cars and if people will still buy them. People buy this car. I've seen at least 7-10 Why are people this stupid? If you must buy a hybird you can buy a normal looking car. Or do hybrid owners need you to know it's a hybrid?
>>9587 >Or do hybrid owners need you to know it's a hybrid? Why do you think they buy a hybrid? It's so everyone else knows just how good of a person they are for helping save the environment. That's why every hybrid car has some distinguishing feature (such as having a blue toyota logo & hybrid symbol).
>>9588 It's true. I guess if they were smart they'd just buy some normal car with a small engine if they care that much.
>>9589 If they were truly intent on 'saving the planet' they wouldn't drive, they wouldn't use electricity, they'd just go off the grid and make everything themselves, grow they own food, etc. Hybrid owners are nothing more than people wanting their ego masturbated by others.
>>9590 agreed.
(53.54 KB 640x480 celica.jpg)

(294.22 KB 688x550 gt86.jpg)

>>9577 It's not hard either, which is what I don't get. The new MX-5 and GT-86 look really great from the front but every time I catch a glimpse of the rear I feel a bit let down. The Toybaru could literally lift the rear lights of the ST-20x Celica and become a 9/10 car. Why don't manufacturers put more emphasis on the rear? One of the best things about cars is how their rear end glows at night.
>>9599 Really? I find the front the worst part.
(80.69 KB 798x387 celica front.jpg)

(357.05 KB 1500x936 86 front.jpg)

>>9610 I think the Toybaru's current front has some really good lines. The 86 does suffer from awkward Lexus-like hueg grill syndrome but that could probably be fixed easily with a painted divider to separate the center grill into two.
>>9626 It looks better in that color then the red one I see near me. I just can't like it. Knowing Toyota, they're just going to can it and keep making that ugly as hell CT the sports car.
At least it's not the FT-1
Guys, I really want to do it. Now before you scream MX-5 at me, consider this: As an all year DD, it costs a lot more to get a miata with an LSD to ensure winter traction, and before you scream BRZ at me, and yes the BRZ does have some good points: The new gauges (yup, '17 86 carries over the old cluster while the BRZ gets the new one), auto climate and a better looking wing, the 86 also has some good points about it: the fluffy dash panel looks better, and in person, the new bumper looks better than the BRZ, and fits more with the car's curvy lines than the straight-edge grille of the BRZ and FRS past, the old gauge cluster, for it's more archaic instrumentation, has the advantage of having round analog gauges in the right pod, where as the new gauges have a square TV sort of not very nicely installed in that round gauge face. And finally, it's a smidge lighter, presumably for lacking that automatic AC and shit. It wouldn't be right now though, I'd go one more winter with my 13 year old RAV4 and delve into things deeper next summer.
(67.10 KB 900x600 ANT-mid5-0915_o.jpg)

(21.80 KB 799x449 IMAG1153.jpg)

>>10650 At first glance the color display is interesting, but it's just integrated badly, and the right portion looks empty, like those old subarus that had a spot for a tach, but were too base-model to have one, having that space filled with analog needles has a classic visual quality.
>>10651 I really don't get why they call it the 86, unless you're a weeb you more than likely have no idea what a 86 is. The change names all the time, they could have just called it the Supra and it would sell better. I see FRS and BRZs all the time. And I'd get one too if I could, but I've only seen a single 86. The only thing on the BRZ that bothers me is the plastic black noise. I kind of like the FRS noise more.
>>10652 I don't mind the name 86. I don't love it, but I don't mind it. An actual weird thing is, in french, we refer to cars and years as [name] [year] where as in english they use [year] [name], so in french, just saying "Toyota 86" without explanations will conjure up images of a 30 year old beater in most people's minds, and is probably with it's a GT86 in europe. The "86" name just has that linguistic quirk in Quebec. Sort of went perusing a dealer lot earlier today and there was a nice one in oceanic, which made my dick into diamonds. I live right next to a subaru dealer which has red and black ones on the lot, and they don't have that effect. Yeah, the big black thing on the BRZ's front isn't axactly awesome. in photos the new 86 nose looks weird, but in person, it makes the front look lower, and the the chin spoiler being more pulled in in the center than the FRS/BRZ makes the gaping grille a lot less visible. looking over the car from a few meters away, that giant opening is made to look tiny.
(161.84 KB 1200x800 header_14.jpg)

(135.46 KB 1024x768 4133c93b.jpg)

>>10654 If I got one. I'd look for a kit to change it. Along with adding a turbo. I'm sure the BRZSTI will be a thing, but it will also be 10k more and I rather just buy a BRZ for 18k and add a turbo later so I can have a fun DD car. Who knows maybe will see more cheap FR sports cars pop up…in my dreams. And as far as names go. Calling it the 86 isn't bad, but really think about it. Most people don't know what that is if you live in NA. I assume it was called the Corolla GT in Canada too. So there whole "bringing back a legend" is lost in the US market. Unless they're trying to sell it to weebs. And this pic would say, yes. And shilling the car in the last ep of Initial D
>>10655 In Canada it was a Corolla GT-S. No way it would have shared the Corolla banner in this age, maybe they could have brought back the Celica name, but most people who know that name these days are more familiar with the last gen, integra-inspired car and not the RWD car of the first 3 gens. I would have straight up called it a "Toyota GT-S", that would have covered the entire "Hey look! small fun car like back then!" nostalgia spectrum from both the Corolla and Celica days. OR call it an FR4, Front engine, rear drive, 4 seater to the MR2's midship, rear drive 2 seater. But maybe that's too close to the defunct Scion's Front engine, Rear drive, Sport "FRS"?
>>10656 GT-S would worked nice. since the FRS name already tells you what it is. Since Scion is dead they could have just called it the Toyota FRS or FR1.
>>10652 >>10655 >>10656 I personally would've called it the Celica, honestly. It's a simple lightweight sports car designed to be tuned and modified. Exactly what every Celica from the ST165 onwards did. The Supra name belongs on the BMW-designed halo car that's coming out soon, and 86/GT-S would only work if it was built on the Corolla's chassis.
My only real issue is lack of power. Only 200ph? The WRX makes 300 with that same 2.0. Why won't they add the option for a trubo? If you want a more powerful one or a supercharger you're going to add it regardless, but some people don't want to fuck the warranty on a 6 month car just go get some more power. I better watch what I wish for. They'll make the STIBRZ 30 grand and at that point I rather the GT Mustang.
>>10670 Lack of power? What I drive has about the power to weight ratio of a base 2.5 impreza and more power isn't even a top priority, I just want more handles and more feels, I'm not worried.
>>10672 Yeah. I know the car handles great, but I don't live in a hilly windy area. For the price you can get the Ford Focus and that has more power and more room for shit. I love the BRZ, but it needs a little more.
>>10673 I'm a mechanic, and you'd have to pay to own a ford.
>>8655 >"renewable fuels" I hope you're not talking about electric, battery tech isn't there as yet and wouldn't be as dense as burning shit till we find some black magic. Countries can produce synthetic hydrocarbons with not alot of start up. Shit is just lazy.
>>10677 What a load of BS. The Focus C-Max my dad owns is pretty damn reliable. Funny enough, it's more reliable than his other DD, a '02 Suzuki Swift Eco.
>>10863 Oh yeah you sure showed me with your sample size of one car, demolishing my years of dealing with ford's bullshit for a living.
>>10864 Care to name some of the problems?
Cracking manifolds/breaking studs Corroding PCMs Corroding FPDMs Bad quality wires cutting in the door hinges Bad quality wires corroding in the wire harnesses Driveshafts driveshafts driveshafts Rod knock (the modular V8 is JUNK) Weak ignition coils Belt tensioner bearings Weak ball joints Lack of staggered shocks on live axles The whole ESOF/Integrated wheel end systems Bad paint adhesion and corrosion. Ecoboost trucks that fall flat on their faces, and endless recalls to *try* and fix them. Factory-defective cooling systems on powerstrokes. The junk "Control blade" rear suspension and it's weak bushings. Failing gauge clusters Failing stereo head units etc.
>>10866 >Ford USA
>>10867 >Ford USA Also, see Mazda's amazing jump in quality since their post-ford-ownership model refreshes. It's not like euro ford has perfect record either, the MkI focus was a piece of trash we were all forced to endure for far too long. When they brought over your mondeo it turned out to be junk too. The Transit van was only good compared to an econoline which was pretty much 1960's farm truck technology. What you guys know as a Kuga is just fresher junk. Drove one the other day and the ride is abysmal and interior ridiculously un-ergonomic. And now we've got global platforms and ford is going to continue doing what they do best : suck shit, but now it'll just be equally shit for everyone. Also >Moving to the Ford C-Max Energi, it seems that if you so much as glance at it the wrong way, it then breaks down. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but Consumer Reports found the C-Max Energi to be the least reliable of all vehicles included in the ownership survey. Mr. Fisher notes that the C-Max Energi received the “worst rating in the entire survey.”
>>10868 Hybrids are trash anyway, but our C-Max has been going strong with no issues whatsoever. aside from the infamous coil pack failure
>>10878 Well shit I jinxed it, the 2nd heater pipe connector on the passenger side failed!
>>10890 2nd heater, you mean the rear seat heater? Don't feel too bad, those fuck up ALL THE TIME. Dodge is the absolute worst for this, It takes about 4 years for the rear AC lines to corrode and leak on a grand caravan.
>>8642 >Mudkip I'm not really seeing it OP
(345.60 KB 797x902 mudkip.png)

>>10906 Neither do I. It does look like a fish, though.
Has Toyota made a better model than the Supra?
>>10929 The GT86 (or, as they are now calling it, simply "86") is meant to be a successor to the AE86 Corolla, not the Supra. The "new Supra" is the FT-1 or whatever it's called - that stupid BMW/Toyota collaboration. Regardless, it's impossible to make something better than the Supra (or any of the other iconic 80s/90s sports cars) with today's safety and emissions standards.
>>10903 No, the coolant circulation hose from the engine to the heater core, it's pretty hard to explain to be honest.

>>10946 The golden years of autos are gone. Safety and emissions standards have all but completely ruined new cars. In 20 years auto "enthusiasts" will be doing nothing but hacking ECUs and (illegally) building their own cars from scratch with 30 year old tech from blueprints bought off the black market, and those cars will be Mad Max tier. >tfw the 80s and 90s will never happen ever again

(47.46 KB 690x518 wk9352.1-lg.jpg)

>>10948 I feel your pain. Even my car would look good in 10 years and this thing is an awful 90s GM W-body.
>>9587 My friend actually likes the look of the Prius, and especially the new ones. I really hate the look of the Prius and it's a rolling insult to the automotive industry
>>10946 >>10948 Feels bad man

(49.28 KB 600x370 600-Aurora1.jpg)

>>10948 Why are there safeties standards for pedestrian crashes? A person getting hit by a car is never going to be pleasant. I get that emissions are killing polar bears (no more then cow farts though) and you probably don't want to be speared in your chest with a steering wheel or launched out the window but those were fixed years ago. It just seems like a whole bunch of sacrifice for not a lot of gain today. It must all be for marketing sake these days, it's what's kept Volvo relevant through out the years. But I think even a marketer would want to try an sell a car that looks pretty then a car that has some stupid gimmick that you'll only use if you're a completely inattentive fuckwit who should be taking the bus anyways. The issue is probably also compounded by the fact manufactures go along with whatever the government asks so they can get bailouts if they fuck up. >>10949 It looks good now, if not in a classical sense.
(100.65 KB 1200x675 2017_toyota_86_031.jpg)

>>12193 Pedestrian safety? That's not significantly less pointy than a supra and if it hits anyone it's going to hurt a lot because it'll hit in the kneecaps.
>>12178 Your friend needs to be euthanized. >>12193 Why are there safeties standards for pedestrian crashes? Because for whatever retarded reason, the relevant regulatory bodies don't think that telling people to not stand in the fucking street is good enough. The problem of bad drivers hitting people on the sidewalk, and of bad drivers in general, would be better solved by making license tests harder and giving greater punishments for serious traffic violations (hitting another vehicle because you weren't paying attention, hitting a pedestrian, etc.). Making it a requirement to learn how to drive a manual would also keep many technical and mental invalids out of the driver seat. I can pretty much guarantee that these three things would solve 99% of our traffic problems. Obviously none of them will be brought about, though, because the public is retarded and the government is retarded. >>12198 It doesn't matter how bubbly it is, any one ton object moving faster than 1 mph would hurt you when it hit. Even if it were literally covered in exterior airbags, that force would still knock you on the ground and injure you. This goes over the heads of the bureaucrats controlling safety regulations - because they are retarded, don't care, or both.
>>12193 I always liked the rear lights. Not bad for what it was ( a family sedan) it mostly has electrical issues. The dash lights will turn off whenever they feel like it an the only way to turn them on again is to turn the headlights off and turn them on, so it looks like I'm flashing my lights all the time. >>12198 That car looks really bad in that color.
(18.04 KB 480x360 d7Mh1tcE3MU.jpg)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7Mh1tcE3MU >>12198 It's not even that a front end is pointy (certainly doesn't help but) it's the fact that even the lightest current production car is still 800+ kg, and the slowest it's most likely to be going is 30 Km/h fucking hurts. Rough math and being generous with the amount of car to person contact is still more then enough to break a femur. Now it shouldn't break your femur cause you'll move away from the impact so the impact is lessened but, best case scenario is going to be a bad time. >>12205 What's always struck me as odd is that we have safety standards for shit for some thing that's only going to happen once or twice during a persons life. I know it's a daily multiple occasion event, but for the average person it's going to be a fluke, and will either take place when they're going so slow they could have survived it in a soapbox or a person was driving in a manner that was totally illegal. And hitting anyone with a car gains at least assault with a weapon, if not a myriad of other infractions. It's all about preparing to do something illegal (which could also be used for as an argument against high horsepower but, if the Japs have taught us anything, no one cares about frivolities like horsepower caps). If anything governments should put out a PSA on HOW to get hit by a car, cause it's not that hard actually. Jump and aim for the windshield if there's no getting out of the way, or try rolling off the side. It's not gonna be great either way but should keep you from getting sucked under the car and is more pushing you over the car rather then onto the ground. >>12231 For faulty electronics I'd say track down a wiring guide and locate your grounds. If they're corroded or clearly not conducting properly, give them a clean and that should help with weird electrical problems. If the ground is fine but the issue persists then I'd say change the light switch (or whatever you want to call it) as it's probably faulty. and loosing connection. And silver is a crap colour that should only be reserved for German touring cars. Everything else that uses it is just a bland boring piece of shit and should invalidate you from driving if you desire it.
>>12235 >PSA on HOW to get hit by a car, Never thought of that. Though I imagine it's about as likely to be implemented as the things I suggested. Idiots refuse to accept any responsibility for their own safety - another reason we have all these regulations.
>>12205 I was referring to the 86, which IMO isn't bubbly at all, and despite all the "wah wah we'll never get something like the supra again because pedestrian safety" moaning, is as pointy as a MKIV and perhaps even less pedestrian safe because it's smaller and it'll topple anything it hits even harder.
>>12256 I was reinforcing your point. If you get hit by a car, the smoothness of the bodywork doesn't matter. You will be injured if the car is moving at more than walking pace. Pedestrian safety standards aren't the only thing fucking up cars, either. Crash safety probably does more to inhibit the driving experience. The measures I mentioned to reduce pedestrian impacts would also reduce vehicle impacts. Basically all of our automotive related problems, except for emissions, are caused by shitty drivers.
>>10948 >you will live to see people hacking ECUs and (illegally) building their own mad-max tier cars from scratch with 30 year old tech from blueprints bought off the black market as nothing unusual Feels /cyber/ian man.
>>10948 Yet sadly, we will not live to see an era of cute girls driving old analog performance cars to catch and stop runaway self driving pleb-mobiles.

>>10650 So, going to test drive one tomorrow, sadly it's an automatic, but it's the only demo in town, so I can understand. Buying it would be out of the question though, because orange and automatic.
>>12651 I didn't drive it hard because it wasn't really a demo, more like a new car for which the guy didn't pass the credit check, so it had 25km on the odo. No matter, the idea wasn't to hoon it around, but just to drive it normally, see if my huge frame is comfortable, if the controls are instinctively placed, etc, and how it behaves when driven normally, like it will be 98% of the time. And as it turns out, surprisingly comfortable and way way way less harsh of a ride than I expected, despite the studded Hankook i*pikes, in fact it struck me as very supple over harsh road elements, soaking up huge bridge expansion joint very well, better than my RAV4, which is dampened more to soak up long wheel travel than small sharp bumps. The automatic transmission, while not really a concern as I desire a manual, felt responsive and fast, enough so that using the paddles didn't feel like a lame and useless side note to the "D" position. The sound system which I've mostly heard bad things about, felt… adequate. I expected something along the lines of "must replace with aftermaket system within days", but it feels livable for awhile until a proper receiver can be sourced without rushing. The LED headlights were one of my biggest concerns, but test driving it at night, I'm glad to say I wasn't displeased with them. OK, so more light and better beams are never enough so there will never be a perfect headlight, but the light output on low beams felt good, specially during gaps in the street light grid, high beams felt VERY powerful, lighting up reflective overhead road signs very brightly, even far off in the distance, though I presume the aim hasn't be touched from the factory and thus is probably aimed too high. As for power and handles, I did mention it was on studded hankooks, so no comment on handles beyond "responsive and stable" and no comment on power because "don't want to floor new engine that isn't mine" beyond that it didn't feel like an issue, one single aggressive throttle blip in 3rd in the 50mph range instantly lit up the traction control, which wasn't turned off because not-my-car. All in all a pretty interesting night.
>>12712 I would also like to add that ergonomically, it was flawless. For a new car that I was driving for the first time, it instantly felt familiar, like I had driven it before many times. Throttle, brake and steering, wipers, indicators, lights, every input from me produced the expected output without any need to "get used to" the car.
>>12712 >>12718 I think they are stupid and overpriced but If you like it then go ahead and look for a manual one. Do some research and make sure it's reliable (it should be, I've heard that the engine takes power a lot better than other Subaru boxers). Granted, there won't be a lot of data out there for a brand new car.

>>12724 My main concern was about oil leaks, and I've already seen FB engines stay bone dry even at high mileage. And overpriced how? Getting an MX-5 with an LSD costs thousands more. Same situation with a 370Z, which costs nearly 10k more if I want an LSD, and I don't want a fucking datsun.
>>12727 >getting an MX-5 with an LSD costs thousands more Without any options the difference is only about $2k, and that's brand new. Chances are, and if you give it some time, you could find a slightly used ND for cheaper than a new GT86, just because the ND will have been around longer. The Miata is also lighter and gets better fuel economy, though it does have a lower power-to-weight ratio (about 14.8 vs about 13 lbs/HP). Torque figures are very similar, however. Based on stats alone, I'd say the ND is a better choice. I've never driven either, and who knows how the values will actually end up. It seems to me like the 86 will depreciated slower due to the 86 meme, so the ND could end up even cheaper in comparison. Have you driven an ND? You might also consider an FR-S - I'm seeing quite a few of those for under $20k. I don't know if an LSD is standard.
>>12738 >Mazda.ca Cheapest MX-5 with an LSD is 35,800.00 +fees >Toyota.ca The only trim level of 86 is 29,580.00 +fees The only miata that would be a viable year-round DD like the 86 is intended to be (hence why I insist on the LSD: Snow) is an RF, at 40k +fees, because fuck a ragtop in winter.
>>12739 >Canada That would have been nice to know in the first place. Nevermind then, I can't help you.

>>12741 The thing is, Toyota and subaru seem to have forgot about the exchange rate, and it's barely 2-3 thousand more than the US price when it should be 10k more. Anyway, there she it, all alone in the dealer's lot during a snowstorm. picking her up on friday evening.

Parts of Europe itself, though, look pretty nice. >>12888 >resilient nigger problem Only in the southern states and big cities (Boston, New York, Los Angeles, etc) is it a major problem. Not much different from Europe afaik. Except where you have refugees being placed in rural villages This has gotten very off topic.

>>12891 Say we focus our national hatred on something else. Like cars. What the fuck you americans are doing with your automotive industry?
>>12894 I'll be the first to unhesitatingly state that the USDM has always been pozzed with automatic transmissions, shitty electronics, and sometimes less shitty mechanics. GM hasn't put out anything decent since the 60s, Ford USA can't design anything reliable with fewer than 8 cylinders in less than 20 years, and Chrysler's only saving grace was AMC. That's what happens when your mainstream culture is based on consumerism and planned obsolescence (which GM invented, by the way).
>>12895 This is too true to be read. God as a eurofag I like some of your rides (new caddies look great, the Corvette is still a legend), but goddamnit the everyday ride is so boring and impossible to sell anywhere else. You even get European designed cars in mainstream sellers (hi Ford and Buick), where we only get your sport cars.
The backseat is impressive in that 86? For a 2+2 I mean… The other day I drove 250+ km with 3 adults in the car, and the guy in the back was doing paperwork. Of course it's not roomy, but comments after the journey were positive. It also returned 7.6l/100km (31 MPG) on the entire trip (incl. the 250+ km drive home) which was done mostly on cruise at 119km/h (74 MPH) in weather that hovered around freezing. I would consider that good. Better than what the manufacturer claims.
(25.71 KB 424x240 BRZ_2013_Int_SportGauges.jpg)

Fun fact: On a manual car, if you turn on the gear indicator in the dash, you also get the shift up/down prompt arrows that blink at you so you save fuel. But if you start to drive aggressively, the shift prompts are automatically deactivated so they don't bother you and don't come back until you've driven off from a stop in a normal manner. Nice touch.
(28.18 KB 340x480 seriously nigger.jpg)

>>12977 >needing a light on the dash to tell you when to shift >not knowing your powerband well enough to know how early you can shift to save fuel
>>12979 Read the post you imbecile, I'm not saying it's needed, I'm saying it's neat that it shuts the fuck up when you're driving in a manner that's counterproductive to it's purpose. When grampa-ing around it's so small it's not even bothersome.
>>12984 The way you worded it made it sound like you actually used it.
>>12977 You mean…manual Toyotas? i have not seen any other car do that.
>>12996 It's actually a manual subaru if you want to get technical about it, but driving an impreza the other day I noticed how many "small things" are from the toyota parts bins. Most things you interact with save for the parking brake lever have the toyota feel, though no matter how much work they did, they couldn't get the boxer out of the engine.
So someone asked me "Why didn't you buy a VW Golf R?" At the time the question to me by surprise because they're totally not the same thing, so I blankly answered "Because it's a VW" But collecting my thoughts, there's a lot more depth to that: in that power range and drivetrain configuration, a wrx is a much better buy. But in the end that's not the same kind of car, and is like asking why someone bought an mx5 instead of a Mustang.
>>13221 >wrx vs golf r = miata vs mustang Hardly. The Golf R is in the same class as the wrx (hot not hatch) has more power, more comfort, and more Germany. It's more like Miata vs Z3 M. Mustang is a completely different kind of car from the Miata - all they share is number of doors. Which wrx is it?
>>13223 >Mustang is a completely different kind of car from the Miata That's the point, owning an 86 I was asked why I didn't buy a Golf R: It's absolutely not what I was looking for. Too heavy, too turbo, too many drive wheel, too much stupid german engineering, 10000 $ more, etc. If I had been shopping in that segment, a WRX would have made a much better choice, but I was shopping in the small-light-cheap-fun segment, because I wanted to return to the small-light-cheap-fun of my first car, which was an AW11 MR2
>>13225 You'd be paying $10000 more for a car that has a mandated minimum amount of recycled plastic. German cars are in such a state that Otto's grave can produce the equivalent of 5000HP.
>>13225 >86 You implied that you had a wrx. >in that power range and drivetrain configuration, a wrx is a much better buy. Never mentioned an 86.
>>13228 In case you did not notice this is an 86 thread. I didn't say I had a WRX, I said it would have been a better buy, had I been shopping in that segment, than the shitty VW the person assumed I should have bought. And that they were an idiot for assuming I wanted an AWD turbo hot hatch when I wanted a lightweight RWD NA coupe.
I would like to add, fuel economy is insane with this car, way better than what's listed on toyota's website. Yesterday I went on a rather long drive, set the cruise at the speed limit and chilled for about 200km, then hauled ass down one of my favorite mountain roads sustaining speeds between 145 and 110 km/h for over a hundred km, then stopped into town to have a bite, then went back home on cruise control doing the speed limit for about another hundred km. During that drive, I basically went from sea level to 800-900m (2600-3000 feet) and back to sea level 3 times. I reset the fuel economy average in the dash as I was leaving, and by the time I was back and refueling, it was showing 6.2l/100km, which is 37.9 mpg. Thirty-seven point nine em pee gees. I am astounded.
>>13227 I bet that mandated minimum is used up in sound deadening material, where recycled plastic actually makes sense.
>>13427 Actually, used in hinges and moving parts. Your idea makes way too much sense to be the case.
>>13427 Germans use the worst plastics for underhood applications too, everything turns brittle after just a few years. Plastic hose barbs on engine components, cooling system, emissions systems are especially problematic.
That fucking BRZ keeps calling me, every few months I start looking at them. Now that I have a real job, a year from now I can think about buiying a car. I can still get my shitbox to 200k before she dies. T I keep telling myself I want to find a 90s jap ca like a NA or a 2.5RS, maybe an AE86 but this thing calls back to me, I see used one going for 15-18k, but for that much I could do better…can't I? That's Honda S2000 money. Thats buying a NA and making her look real nice money. All the 90s jap cars I find are too good to be true deals or so broken I'd never dream of DDing it….maybe a year from now I could get a used BRZ that hasn't been beat to death before it turned 5 years old. A part of me just can't trust newer cars. I
>>13546 I did the whole "80's japanese car" thing like 15+ years ago and I've been DDing my 86 since mid march, it's a way better daily driver than any 90's car could be. It feels old school, while avoiding being the shit heap those old cars would be after a quarter century.
>>13548 Where do you live? do you need to worry about salt and snow?
>>13548 Why do you think any car turns into a shit heap after 1/4 of century? Mine turns 30 next year, and it is still better than that fucking stupid VW Bora garbage my neighbour has.
>>13549 Yes, road salt, abrasive sand and rocks, cold starts below -20, shoveling the plow's burm so it won't get stuck or ruin the bumper. The 86 is likely going to wear some studded Pirellis come november. >>13550 Because I'm an auto mechanic. But also: finding a good price on a clean "classic" japanese sports car that hasn't been beat to shit is going to be fucking random luck. And even once you have one, it's still not a great idea to DD because the car itself is a scarce, finite resource. The reason a GT/86/BRZ makes sense as a DD is that it isn't something special, it's literally made from the subaru parts bins, if anything happens to anything you can probably get most things fixed on the same day with no hassle.
>>13551 Like I said the thought comes back to me every few months to look at one over what I keep saying I'd like. For the price they're too slow to buy new. Maybe if I did get a used one for under 20k. I'd have to test drive one. By this time next year my car I drive now will be around 110k miles give or take. It could live longer, maybe. The only other new car aside from the BRZ that I like at all is the new MX5. I still think the front is too angry, but the cars been growing on me,however I'd still like a NA or NB over it…
>>13558 >Too slow So what you're saying is your a shitty driver?
>>13560 No, the thing should be kicking out more than fucking 200 horsepower
>>13563 Sadly I don't live around winding roads, unless I drive up north. I'm not wild about that hard top MX5 they showed. I have no doubt they're both amazing track cars. A new MX5 is also too much. If I got one I'd wait for them to drop a bit and buy a used one. I never said I didn't like the cars. I know people like to turbo the BRZs don't know if they do it with the MX5 though. I'm sure if it was from the factory they'd make the car 5 grand more and call it the BRZ STI
>>13564 What I mean is, it isn't underpowered for what it is, looking at it's lap times it's often in very good company. But if you want to steamroll people on straights, then that's pretty much what the car was designed against. With that being said though, it's a wonderful drive in regular traffic and a very nice high speed cruiser, I spent a few hours the other day at 85+ mph and it was completely undramatic, and even economical, and that was the 6MT with the 4.3 rear end, the automatic with the 4.1 would be even better at that, and having driven it, it's a very good automatic.
>>13566 I'd never get it in an automatic. With a car like that I know I'm not winning any drag battles against pony cars. Maybe if they have the 4 banger mustang and I'm faster off the line? I'll see where I am a year from now and what I like more, the BRZ or the MX5. I do like the idea of making the BRZ turbo. I could find an FRS too maybe. I'm not crazy about the front bumper of the 86. I would just need to find a place to put the front plate that doesn't fuck with the car. any pics of yours by any chance?

>>13569 I lived next to a subaru dealer (I didn't move, they did) and say the refreshed BRZ every day for months last year when it came out, I'll say that pictures make the subaru look better, but in person the toyota looks better, the recessed grille makes the nose look longer and lower, and being recessed it doesn't look as huge and gaping as in pictures, while on the subaru the large flush grille and huge black bar don't stand out in a good way. The subaru bumper is also full of straight lines and angles which are nowhere else on the car, which is stupid? Here's mine, I added the fog lights which weren't available in canada, and the underbody panels
(2.45 MB 1848x3242 IMG_20170628_213727.jpg)

>>13570 I love the LED headlights, look at that cutoff! BTW, the pre-'17 manual FRS and BRZ have a 4.1 diff, so they'll cruise better at high speed than a '17 and up.
>>13570 Yeah the plastic thing on the BRZ is a little…eh. I wonder if they have kits to replace it with a full grill. I didn't know Canada let you have no front plate. Guess guy guys have 1 better thing than us ( along with more Skylines) The 86 looks pretty good in that color too. >>13571 If I buy a used one my guess is it will be pre-'17 thats if I don't fall in love with the mx5 The FRS looks like it pops out a little less thren the 86 does. You can't buy new FRS anymore so I wonder how many are still sitting at Toyota dealers. I know it has a white cluster and imo those look tacky. Have you thought about adding a turbo at all or are you keeping her NA? I'm also going to assume all 3 and the MX5 hold up fine since they're jap cars? I don't know shit about how new cars do. I drive a 23 year old GM.

>>13572 All 3 are pretty nice even if they're the same car. It's a shame they make up most of the market for FR sports cars if you don't count the pony cars or the MX5. It's a dying market and the faggot laws in place will make it worst. I also wanted to ask how the blind spots are in that thing? Is seeing out the back a pain?
>>13573 Keeping it NA, it's my daily and I like things simple and reliable. The view out of the back is GREAT, the left blind spot is HUGE. You pretty much have to set your side mirrors to see the bling spots.
>>13574 Fuck man this thing keeps calling me. I might next drive one in 8 months when I'm closer to thinking about buying a car. Not sure I want to buy new. I'm not made of money.
>>13574 Also, front plates are a provincial thing, Quebec has no front plates, but Ontario does for example. Of course few are the people who are actually made out of money, I wouldn't have been opposed to a used one, but the list of improvements to the '17 is quite large, so while I was ruminating the decision over last winter, I was piling some money, and by the time I was ordering the car, I was pretty much knocking 11.5k out of it along with some trade in shenanigans, which in the end makes it not utterly expensive.
>>13577 Plates are state by states. Most states down south care about freedom more and let you not dill holes in your car. It's not the case where I am since my state is communist. I said I'd just not put the plate on, but I'm told I'll get pulled over daily for it. It's fucking stupid. You spend 26k+ on a car and ruin the front with an ugly tin plate and before a few years ago they would drill fucking holes in the bumper. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I plan on saving like crazy. I have loans to pay off, but I can manage that and get a car. It's why I'm going to wait till next summer. By then I should know what I want…I hope. Its fun, till now I didn't have a real job so I could never think about getting a car.
>>13578 Can't it just be zip tied in the grille? It's not like a rear plate that has lights and shit, as long as it's securely fastened and not obscured shouldn't that get a pass? I went and got my front plate rack, as we still get them, but they're in a little bag in the trunk, and it's a monstrosity, like, as wide as an euro plate and seems to mount in the fucking PAINTED PART of the bumper with HUGE half-inch wide well-nuts. If I had to have one, I'd definitely go with an aftermarket solution that mounts in the tow hook threads. Like http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/grimmspeed-plate-relocation-199.html#.WVw-YHXythE But if you're buying used the damage will already be done.
>>13580 I see that one a lot on those cars. Some get unlucky and they drill holes on that plastic part of the BRZ. I see very few FRS and 86 around here for some reason so I can't say for sure I could zip tie it on. We just have a very ugly plate that stands out like crazy
