This is a webtoon that I read 2-3 chapters of during my webtoon day. I want to make comparison to 2 other series like this. Disclaimer this is non-yuri (hetero even) . while looking for image to post it turn out this still continue with mc pursuing her love. Now that I look at the trailer, mc is pursuing highscool romance life from get go. I don’t remember it at all.
Odd Girl Out. the tagline was “being a ducklett among swans. I will survive!”
The premise is the normal /below average girl (Nari) somehow get a peer of girls above her. The 2 series i want to compare are Watamote and Bocchi the Rock
-Watamote premise: a girl (Tomoko) become cast out because her mind become adult too soon and she got wrong idea on how to be popular. It didn’t matter during middle school but she become conscious about it in highschool. She end up circled by girls who are peak of their own peers
-Bocchi the Rock premise: (disclaimer I only watch 1 episode of this in beginning of season without sub). a shut-in girl (Bocchi) / with social anxieties. She join band and overcome her anxieties.
In-series comparison:
Nari get the 3 girls right out the bat on day 1 due to string of simple events and she just kinda stuck there. Also the mc IS normal. She doesn’t have social anxieties like Bocchi nor weird thought like Tomoko. In Watamote the girls who flock to her feel natural. It start with being put in group of 4 during school trip. Once they know each other they start saying hi, sit in same group during 2nd year’s graduation bbq. She then doing her own thing that accidentally attract other girl/look like she is the only one who can do that. Bocchi join on her volition to change herself.
<Yuriness:
for Watamote see next section and * below. ODO is published in mainstream webtoon and you know Korean weren’t progressive. As for Bocchi it’s been 11 months since I saved a screenshot of the PV and during my pixiv search in that time I have yet to save single Bocchi pic. but I know the series is popular and got tons of yuri artwork. It lean toward "cute girl doing cute things" rather than harem.
Meta comparison:
Watamote is “old generation otaku” loner, Bocchi is for newer “lonely current gen” people who like anime.
The girls in watamote have pronounced quirk once you get to know them. OGO simply display that the 3 girls are beauty. Bocchi have. . normal girls
Watamote girls feel like a ‘normal’ harem where each girl are made pronounced to cater to various reader**. Bocchi ones are normal, girls quirk aren’t pronounced but still different. The vibe I get from Bocchi are normal girls helping an anxious girl and they become normal friends. Each of Watamote girls have friends or peer outside of Tomoko but when they interact most attention goes to her.
As for OGO I am tempted to say maybe the girls are just there to stunt mc’s life but this is probably because I don’t know the series enough (Im not reading 350+ chapters of het). In Bocchi’s case the social difference isn’t as pronounced as this one.
**I’m not bashing it. I have 2 volumes of the series: one because it shows Tomoko can do things I can’t the other because I save a lot of pages*.
side note. People separate watamote into periods:
1 classic watamote. 1st year of highschool. Tomoko was trying to be popular by (mis) following stuff she learn in internet. Yet another thing that make her different than normal girls is at the core she is a natural loner. She is really equipped to deal with having no peer to hang-out with during 1st year. The era that propel watamote’s success, readers find it the first character that give them both relatable highschool experience (this was 2008 mangas didn’t really branched like today) and a hardcore otaku in form of an unkempt girl.
2 transition watamote. 2nd year. Still with her antic but she interact with more characters,
3 modern watamote. We harem now!
