大怪獣- Kaiju Thread Anonymous 09/27/2020 (Sun) 05:46:18 Id: 9fb451 No. 52
大怪獣 Hail to the king baby! Giant monster talk goes here. It doesn't just have to be Japanese movies either so the rare Western kaiju and other Asian kaiju are welcome too. And for the heck of it we'll also include movies that are peripheral to the kaiju genera like Green Slime and Matango.
(93.47 KB 1280x720 gorgo.jpg)

How many non Japanese "kaiju" movies have any of you watched and which ones are your favorites?
>>333 The original King Kong is in a league of its own. It's so much better than everything else in the genre that I wonder if it even counts. Son of Kong is also underrated, and benefits immensely from being one of the few kaiju movies ever to actually use recurring characters, so I automatically begin caring about Denham's character and story, which actually goes in a logical direction from the original. It works very well as a double feature with the original. It feels like an organic continuation, even if it isn't quite as good. America basically had its own age of kaiju movies, but they never called them that. But things like Tarantula and Them seem like basically the same thing. Plenty of dinosaur movies going back to the dawn of cinema are basically the same premise. Hell, even a lot of the most famous Godzilla monsters are basically just dinosaurs with nicknames. Rodan is the localization of Radon, and he's just a Pteranodon. Angilas is just an ankylosaurus. So if that's the case, does The Lost World count? It's basically the precursor to King Kong. Hell, does Jurassic Park? Few would argue that The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms doesn't count, and that's just a dinosaur too.
>>337 For something to be in the same realm as the kaiju genera it really needs to be beyond simply a normal dinosaur being portrayed in a semi-"realistic" manner. So something like Kong or the Giant Behemoth, or La Carcagne would qualify as a kaiju but something like Gwangi wouldn't. Mighty Joe Young is sort of a borderline case.
>>342 Radon and Angilas are basically just regular dinosaurs. Was there even anything mentioned about Angilas being irradiated? It's not particularly relevant in either of they're cases. They're basically as realistic as one would expect of a movie from that era, and we are told specifically what kind of real life dinosaurs they are. They just have nicknames because the Japanese can't pronounce their real names easily, or because Toho figured it would be more marketable, or something like that. But if you want a non-pedantic answer, I'd argue Atragon might be my favorite of their Showa era stuff, but I hesitate to even count it, since Manda isn't actually particularly important in it. The movie gets by by having a much better story and much more interesting characters than probably any of the other movies in the Toho Kaiju universe or whatever you would call it. The Mysterians and Battle in Outer Space are pretty cool, too, but not really because of Mogura, because again he feels like an afterthought. The special effects in general are cool in those ones, though.
>>343 >Radon and Angilas are basically just regular dinosaurs. They were just regular dinosaurs, or started that way at least, but they were portrayed as much larger and much more resilient than simply a dinosaur revived from suspended animation would be. >Atragon I've never seen that movie. It's one of only a handful of Showa era Toho movies that I still haven't seen.
>>348 >They were just regular dinosaurs, or started that way at least, but they were portrayed as much larger and much more resilient than simply a dinosaur revived from suspended animation would be. Well sure, but that's basically the case for dinosaurs in cinema going back to the dawn of film. Few movies actually portrayed them particularly realistically. And even when they do, does that invalidate them? Gorosaurus is literally just the t-rex that King Kong rips the jaw off of. Does he not count? And if he does, then the T-rex from the original King Kong and the 2005 remake must count, right? But the original especially is clearly just intended to be a regular T-Rex. But it serves a very similar role to Kong (albeit a smaller role), and Kong is definitely a kaiju. And if the T-Rex counts, what about the other dinosaurs in the original King Kong? And then what about the dinosaurs in The Lost World? I think a big part of this is just how recent the discovery of dinosaurs, and gorillas for that matter, really is. When these movies were made, they were both recent discoveries, and not a lot was known about either, at least by the general public, hence why Cooper was so enthralled by a movie about a gorilla. They were new and they were cool. Real life gorillas are practically small kaiju. And real life dinosaurs are basically kaiju as well. Film dinosaurs, even if intended as realistic at the time, were portrayed as larger than life, because that's how people saw them, and still see them today. Couple that with how inaccurate our knowledge of them at the time was, and it makes film dinosaurs of the era seem even more monstrous compared to the real things.
Does anyone have Shin Godzilla? I missed it when it was shown.
>>350 Honestly I think you have to seperate American Kong from Toho Kong. Toho Kong is clearly kaiju but American Kong is I guess you could call it proto-kaiju. The original King Kong could be killed by machine guns from biplanes. Toho Kong was just as resistant to 50s era military grade weaponry as Godzilla is. I guess I'm just splitting hairs really.
>>354 Toho Kong is a kaiju. Original King Kong is an actual animal. Just a super sized animal.

>>59 >KotM being a way better film than 2014 Wrong.
>>385 Local TORpedo prefers Godzilla 2014 because it has 14 in it.
(1.15 MB 723x622 Gamera.png)

When are we going to see another Gamera movie? Or any other kaiju movies that aren't specifically in the main Godzilla crew for that matter?

>>392 Probably never. Kadokawa seems adamant about not doing anything with the IP. Even despite the resurgence of Godzilla media since 2014. You can however by the whole series of Gamera films through some new blu-ray releases by Arrow.

I know that in the original American release of King Kong vs Godzilla that they replaced most of the original music with the music from Creature from the Black Lagoon and in Godzilla vs Hedorah Return the Sun was transformed into Save the Earth, were there any other weird musical localization in the original releases of the Godzilla movies?
New Godzilla v Kong spoilers.

>>455 >Heisei Godzilla's eyes get progressively fierier in every film until it culminates with Burning Godzilla I wonder if that was Toho's plan from the very start of the Heisei series?
>>457 I said nearly all. It's missing Godzilla Earth but included his small son. Doesn't have any of the Godzilla Junior forms or either Minilla. >>458 I wouldn't doubt it.
Movie is very good. Not one of the Godzilla movies that has something it wants to say. Just a very straight forward heavy weight title fight with a surprised visit from MechaGodzilla. KotM was better but this one was still really entertaining.

Since there was one anon on /v/ who isn't aware of the various continuities of Godzilla, here's a handy image guide. May be slightly dated but helps significantly if you're new to this franchise.
>>473 This needs an update.
>>463 It's easily the worst of the monterverse. Reading up on some of the original ideas and what was cut, it sounds like it could of been a good follow-up to KotM, but the end result is just disappointing.
>>477 It's okay to have an opinion. But yours is wrong. 2014 is the weakest of the series.
(151.35 KB 1920x1080 mpv-shot0001.jpg)

I was watching the commentary on KotM, and the director mentioned these bones outside of Godzilla's lair. I can't figure out what they're supposed to be, anyone have any ideas? >>481 2014 is by far the best.
>>489 It's Anguirus. No the best is King of the Monsters with Godzilla vs. Kong in second place.
