大怪獣- Kaiju Thread Anonymous 09/27/2020 (Sun) 05:46:18 Id: 9fb451 No. 52
大怪獣 Hail to the king baby! Giant monster talk goes here. It doesn't just have to be Japanese movies either so the rare Western kaiju and other Asian kaiju are welcome too. And for the heck of it we'll also include movies that are peripheral to the kaiju genera like Green Slime and Matango.
Haven't seen that many kaiju films other than the originals of Gojira and a couple of other things. What are some must see? Were this decade Godzilla films any good?
(1.15 MB 900x1273 58186489_p0.png)

>>53 >What are some must see? I'm particular a fan of the two Toho Frankenstein movies. The second Gamera movie is a favorite of mine too. For Western kaiju may favorite two are Reptilicus and Gorgo. Oh and The Giant Claw. You've watched Mothra and Rodan haven't you? >Were this decade Godzilla films any good? I've not seen Shin Godzilla yet, other than some excerpts, but it's considered a great modern giant monster movie. Better thaan the American Legendary Godzilla.
>>53 Shin Godzilla is a great modern take on the horror of the original Godzilla. The Godzilla anime movie trilogy on Netflix is also good but people have a low opinion of it. Mostly because most people don't understand Godzilla films. They also expected far more actual kaiju on kaiju fights. When really all the movies are about humanity versus Godzilla in a hopeless situation. King of the Monsters is an excellent sequel to the 2014 American Godzilla. It improved on everything people disliked about the first movie. It's also far more of an all out kaiju brawl that ignorant people think all Godzilla is.
(1.50 MB 1095x1176 Legendary_Godzilla.png)

(309.46 KB 1024x1449 Shin_Godzilla.jpg)

>>55 Do you think they'll ever make a Godzilla vs Godzilla movie since both the Shin and Legendary incarnations are so popular?
>>58 Nope. Anno has no interest in making a sequel to Shin Godzilla, despite ending on a sequel hook. While Legendary will likely end the monsterverse movies after Godzilla vs Kong. Despite KotM being a way better film than 2014, it wasn't a massive success.
(331.37 KB 1280x889 527.jpg)

>>59 >Anno has no interest in making a sequel to Shin Godzilla That's probably for the best given Anno's... tendencies. I really hope the next Toho Godzilla movie goes back to Suitmation too.
>>55 The reason people think that's what Godzilla is is because even people who actually watch the films usually come away just remembering the monsters and the fights. The human stories in 99% of Godzilla movies are very forgettable, and frequently have very little to do with Godzilla, which I suppose makes sense since so many Godzilla movies were unrelated movies that Toho just slapped Godzilla into at the last second. For this reason, the best "Godzilla" movies are the ones that straight up don't have Godzilla in them. Plenty of other Toho-universe films that have monsters that appear in later Godzilla movies are better than most actual Godzilla movies, and it's a shame they don't get attention. Atragon I think is based on a novel, which explains why it has a much better story than most. Godzilla movies should try harder to at least have human plots that are more intricately tied to what Godzilla is actually doing. I know it isn't actually what the series is, but it's what the series should be. The best part of the 2014 one was the two seconds when Kick-Ass was actually helping Godzilla fight the bad guys, even if only in a minor way, because at least then I had a reason to care what Kick-Ass was doing. I'm sure there are a couple more movies where the humans are more significant to what Godzilla is doing, but usually it's the opposite, where the humans are fighting some aliens or something, and then Godzilla shows up to fight a kaiju the aliens are controlling, but it's really disconnected otherwise. Final Wars is the best because at least the humans in that are basically the X-Men. It's not like the rest of the Godzilla movies, but at least they're entertaining.
(1.07 MB 975x1300 EfoUQZeU0AMJ9M7.jfif)

>>67 That's retarded. The human plots are always in response to Godzilla or other kaiju threats. I'll agree the characters are forgettable but the plots themselves are not. I blame the media perception & horrible english dubs/localizations making the average person view something like Godzilla as lame campy rubber monster fights. Yeah a lot of the Showa films are that but the franchise is not so braindead as a whole.
>>68 Oh I never meant to imply that they're braindead, but frequently that they are too divorced from Godzilla himself. There are the ones where Godzilla is more of a villain, and/or the only monster, and those are a bit different, but for the ones where Godzilla is a "good guy," frequently what ends up happening is a human plot that has nothing to do with Godzilla, and then when Godzilla shows up the humans become irrelevant. The best ones are the ones where the humans and Godzilla are actually both working together and doing things that influence the others' fight, not just "humans escape from alien base while Godzilla fights a kaiju," since those two things don't actually affect each other much, even if the kaiju Godzilla is fighting works for the aliens.
Anyone else remember the time that Kin Jong-il kidnapped a South Korean film maker and his actress wife and brainwashed for 11 years to force them to make pro communist kaiju movie?

>>93 They haven't shown up since Final Wars. Unless you count the Mothra people twins in the anime movie trilogy.

>>102 >The most exciting original motion picture event of all time. >a remake of a 43 year old classic Huh?
>>104 It's just a tagline. A stupid one but eye catching enough.
>>105 He should have gone officially with " When a-shark die nobody a-cry; But when Kong die everybody a-gonna cry!"
>>106 But that's a spoiler!
Stolen from /co/ because just look at this majestic fucking creature.
>>188 Would it be called Kingzilla? Or God Kong?
>>189 I'm wondering if he would have an electrical breath weapon.
>>189 God Kang
>>188 It should've been Godzilla with gorilla arms.
I wonder if it would have been any good?
>>232 >>233 This is pretty much the Peter Jackson King Kong.
A new poster has finally been released & a trailer is planned for Sunday.
>>305 IT BEGINS!
>>305 >>309 Trailer dropped today. It's good but they kind of ruined it with nigger hip hop. Still I'm excited but already have a strong feeling on one thing. That's not the real Godzilla. https://youtu.be/gBS6vaNFcx4
>>313 >make a movie starring a giant ape >play rap in the trailer Wew. >That's not the real Godzilla. You think it's Mechagodzilla?

(241.18 KB 1920x1080 mechagodzilla.jpg)

(252.26 KB 1920x1080 mechagodzilla system.jpg)

>>314 It's 100% MechaGodzilla. There was even toy leaks forever ago that showed Kong with an axe, the flying snake monsters, MechaGodzilla, & Godzilla himself in a big red harness over his spine.
>>313 >old man Kong has connection to a little girl >yet another movie where an old man version of a badass sacrifices himself for a little girl THE FUTURE IS FEMALE. You didn't get the metaphor in Logan? Or in goddamn Planet of the Apes? Maybe you'll get it this time, you shitlords.
>>316 Man you're being a little too trigger happy on that there. The grizzled old man with a little girl is just the weary weathered elder protecting the young & innocent.
>>317 I used to be as optimistic and naive as you. After how blatant they've gotten in the last few years, though, I can no longer pretend it isn't deliberate.
(93.47 KB 1280x720 gorgo.jpg)

How many non Japanese "kaiju" movies have any of you watched and which ones are your favorites?
>>333 The original King Kong is in a league of its own. It's so much better than everything else in the genre that I wonder if it even counts. Son of Kong is also underrated, and benefits immensely from being one of the few kaiju movies ever to actually use recurring characters, so I automatically begin caring about Denham's character and story, which actually goes in a logical direction from the original. It works very well as a double feature with the original. It feels like an organic continuation, even if it isn't quite as good. America basically had its own age of kaiju movies, but they never called them that. But things like Tarantula and Them seem like basically the same thing. Plenty of dinosaur movies going back to the dawn of cinema are basically the same premise. Hell, even a lot of the most famous Godzilla monsters are basically just dinosaurs with nicknames. Rodan is the localization of Radon, and he's just a Pteranodon. Angilas is just an ankylosaurus. So if that's the case, does The Lost World count? It's basically the precursor to King Kong. Hell, does Jurassic Park? Few would argue that The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms doesn't count, and that's just a dinosaur too.
>>337 For something to be in the same realm as the kaiju genera it really needs to be beyond simply a normal dinosaur being portrayed in a semi-"realistic" manner. So something like Kong or the Giant Behemoth, or La Carcagne would qualify as a kaiju but something like Gwangi wouldn't. Mighty Joe Young is sort of a borderline case.
>>342 Radon and Angilas are basically just regular dinosaurs. Was there even anything mentioned about Angilas being irradiated? It's not particularly relevant in either of they're cases. They're basically as realistic as one would expect of a movie from that era, and we are told specifically what kind of real life dinosaurs they are. They just have nicknames because the Japanese can't pronounce their real names easily, or because Toho figured it would be more marketable, or something like that. But if you want a non-pedantic answer, I'd argue Atragon might be my favorite of their Showa era stuff, but I hesitate to even count it, since Manda isn't actually particularly important in it. The movie gets by by having a much better story and much more interesting characters than probably any of the other movies in the Toho Kaiju universe or whatever you would call it. The Mysterians and Battle in Outer Space are pretty cool, too, but not really because of Mogura, because again he feels like an afterthought. The special effects in general are cool in those ones, though.
>>343 >Radon and Angilas are basically just regular dinosaurs. They were just regular dinosaurs, or started that way at least, but they were portrayed as much larger and much more resilient than simply a dinosaur revived from suspended animation would be. >Atragon I've never seen that movie. It's one of only a handful of Showa era Toho movies that I still haven't seen.
>>348 >They were just regular dinosaurs, or started that way at least, but they were portrayed as much larger and much more resilient than simply a dinosaur revived from suspended animation would be. Well sure, but that's basically the case for dinosaurs in cinema going back to the dawn of film. Few movies actually portrayed them particularly realistically. And even when they do, does that invalidate them? Gorosaurus is literally just the t-rex that King Kong rips the jaw off of. Does he not count? And if he does, then the T-rex from the original King Kong and the 2005 remake must count, right? But the original especially is clearly just intended to be a regular T-Rex. But it serves a very similar role to Kong (albeit a smaller role), and Kong is definitely a kaiju. And if the T-Rex counts, what about the other dinosaurs in the original King Kong? And then what about the dinosaurs in The Lost World? I think a big part of this is just how recent the discovery of dinosaurs, and gorillas for that matter, really is. When these movies were made, they were both recent discoveries, and not a lot was known about either, at least by the general public, hence why Cooper was so enthralled by a movie about a gorilla. They were new and they were cool. Real life gorillas are practically small kaiju. And real life dinosaurs are basically kaiju as well. Film dinosaurs, even if intended as realistic at the time, were portrayed as larger than life, because that's how people saw them, and still see them today. Couple that with how inaccurate our knowledge of them at the time was, and it makes film dinosaurs of the era seem even more monstrous compared to the real things.
Does anyone have Shin Godzilla? I missed it when it was shown.
>>350 Honestly I think you have to seperate American Kong from Toho Kong. Toho Kong is clearly kaiju but American Kong is I guess you could call it proto-kaiju. The original King Kong could be killed by machine guns from biplanes. Toho Kong was just as resistant to 50s era military grade weaponry as Godzilla is. I guess I'm just splitting hairs really.
>>354 Toho Kong is a kaiju. Original King Kong is an actual animal. Just a super sized animal.

When are we going to see another Gamera movie? Or any other kaiju movies that aren't specifically in the main Godzilla crew for that matter?

>>392 Probably never. Kadokawa seems adamant about not doing anything with the IP. Even despite the resurgence of Godzilla media since 2014. You can however by the whole series of Gamera films through some new blu-ray releases by Arrow.

I know that in the original American release of King Kong vs Godzilla that they replaced most of the original music with the music from Creature from the Black Lagoon and in Godzilla vs Hedorah Return the Sun was transformed into Save the Earth, were there any other weird musical localization in the original releases of the Godzilla movies?

>>457 I said nearly all. It's missing Godzilla Earth but included his small son. Doesn't have any of the Godzilla Junior forms or either Minilla. >>458 I wouldn't doubt it.
Movie is very good. Not one of the Godzilla movies that has something it wants to say. Just a very straight forward heavy weight title fight with a surprised visit from MechaGodzilla. KotM was better but this one was still really entertaining.
(7.41 MB 4150x2335 THE_GODZILLA_TIMELINE.jpg)

Since there was one anon on /v/ who isn't aware of the various continuities of Godzilla, here's a handy image guide. May be slightly dated but helps significantly if you're new to this franchise.
>>473 This needs an update.
>>463 It's easily the worst of the monterverse. Reading up on some of the original ideas and what was cut, it sounds like it could of been a good follow-up to KotM, but the end result is just disappointing.
>>477 It's okay to have an opinion. But yours is wrong. 2014 is the weakest of the series.
(151.35 KB 1920x1080 mpv-shot0001.jpg)

I was watching the commentary on KotM, and the director mentioned these bones outside of Godzilla's lair. I can't figure out what they're supposed to be, anyone have any ideas? >>481 2014 is by far the best.
>>489 It's Anguirus. No the best is King of the Monsters with Godzilla vs. Kong in second place.
