>to be fair, KANTOOOO is seen as cringe nowadays
Is it though? I don't hang out in Pokemon fandom much, I think the last time I saw anyone outside of /vp/ make fun of KANTOOOOOOOOOO was Realidea. Meanwhile the official media have KANTOOOOOOOOO on full blast since gen 6.

Genwun is definitely a problem, but it's a symptom rather than the cause. Even gen 5, for all its flaws, tried to do something new, it just fucked up the execution. Meanwhile gen 6 started cutting dex, replacing new species with mostly KANTOOOOOOO forms. Most megas are KANTOOOOOOOO, all Alolan regionals are KANTOOOOOOO, most Galarian forms are KANTOOOOOOO, most G-max and thus ace Pokemon in gen 8, including the fucking champion, are KANTOOOOOOO. We keep getting rehashes of KANTOOOOOOO events like Nugget Bridge, Snorlax, Team Rocket, Kantonian gym, Santalune Forest being completely ripped off from Viridian Forest, and on and on. This all being a symptom of GF cutting costs and using existing content as padding.
Generations 6, 7 and 8 have less than 100 new Pokemon each, with a higher proportion of legendaries or equivalents like UBs due to the lower sample.
>Johto and Sinnoh pandering is arguably way more popular than KAAAAAAAAAAANTOOOOOOOOOOOOO pandering in fangames
I don't think there's much of either outside of using creation trio for shitty fanfiction because of course they need the most narratively powerful to try and make their games look good. Maybe Cynthia and Looker? But Looker's whole shtick is that he's a glowie from who knows where, definitely not Sinnoh given his accent there. Cynthia wank has the usual dumb reasons, of course.
Mind you, I don't think there's nearly as much KANTOOOOO pandering in fangames than in official games. There's still probably more of genwun than any other gen pandering in fangames. I'm not actually sure about the general distribution since there's way too much shit in the fangame territory.
