Fwiw the insulin also costs money to produce and costs money for R&D, it can't be free unless you want the pharmaceutical companies to be state-owned (and then it's still not free, taxes are a cost). It's not even about price, it's about giving me the
ability to buy it in the quantity I need (because I can buy it out-of-pocket for like $15/vial). They just don't write a prescription for the quantity that their own computer system says I need for some reason, probably "standard operating procedure" because insulin resistance is a big issue in type-2 diabetics and complacency on the part of everyone in the office.
Doctors fucking suck in the US, but everything that's done to "fix" the issue makes it worse in one way or another.
Also insulin is used by some bodybuilders as a steroid (it prevents some muscle degradation) so that's why pharmacies are required to be so restrictive of it, comboed with IP on specific formulations.
I could get el generico insulin for $5/vial if I wanted, but it'd be an entire restructure of my life and it wouldn't work in my pump because it's not formulated to work as fast as the specific type I use.
