I was thinking of radiance cascades as a screen-space effect, yes, but I only brought it up as an example because I know the Path of Exile engine uses deferred rendering and those guys do a lot of cool stuff, it's just really hard to look at the current state of real-time graphics and not feel disillusioned sometimes, so I wanted to share that.
I don't actually care much about forward vs deferred rendering, I think both can look and perform really well so long as the devs care, while MSAA is really nice I don't think it's necessary to have a good looking game.
