Captain's Log, Stardate 43185.9. We are tracking a small, elongated artifact of uncertain origin that has appeared and vanished at intervals in deep space near the Nigae region. The object manifested 326 times over the last two hours, each appearance lasting only a few seconds before it faded from visual and sensor returns. It otherwise produced no detectable propulsion or energy signature.
During a later disappearance, the object left behind a white, viscous residue that persisted for several minutes before dissipating into the vacuum. Sensor analysis shows no life signs or known radiation/gravimetric anomalies associated with the residue. We have recovered a sample for onboard analysis and have placed the surrounding sector under temporary quarantine until further data is obtained.
The repeated appearances, brief dwell times, and the transient residue suggest a non-biological, possibly nanotechnological or extradimensional phenomenon. Captain and command staff are maintaining heightened watch as we gather more data. End
