That's a very complex question but it boils down to two things. The first being obsession over being "white" is much more of an Americas thing than a European one because you know, white people are everywhere here in Europe, so people think of each other more in terms of nationality than race. The second being what counts as "white" has historically expanded over time in the US so there's probably a mindset of, "eventually I'll be on the right side if I take this position". That and a general trend that immigrants tend to become more conservative and, for lack of a better word, ladder-pulling as they become more settled into the country. The Italians used to be very left-wing in America, the Germans who came over in the 1800s were extremely left-wing because they primarily fought for the losing side in the 1848 revolution. Both of which are very conservative groups in the US now.
