>>45383 The writers focused way too hard on the gems early on, setting up the intrigue and mystery, but then would shove out like 10 episodes on the townies that didn't matter because they didn't really get to do anything substantial over the course of the show, save Lars, but he literally fucking died and even then, his contribution to the plot is helping Steven learn he can bring people back from the dead and that there are misfit gems who'd be happy to rebel against Homeworld. If they let the townies do more for the actual plot other than act as filler in between arcs, that would've been so much better and would've made people actually like them rather than groan when they showed up. On top of that, the way Future was handled was frustrating because it focused almost entirely on Steven and his trauma over wrapping up any of the lingering plot threads from the series. They get handwaved (Jasper? Never changes, just decides Steven is ok when she realizes he's a Diamond. The Diamonds? Became 100% good post movie. Homeworld? Now a democracy where only four gems are really shown to be upset about the change in status quo) for the sake of showing Steven slowly losing his shit and then, after all that build up, we get the big blow up where he turns into a monster, turns back because of the power of love, and then the finale is him all better, with a off hand mention of going to therapy. There's so much they could have done with it and they did the most unsatisfying thing possible. tl;dr- Unsatisfying show, music good though.

The show had a lot of potential, but they squandered it at every opportunity. I like aliens and all but the story couldnt handle an interstellar empire like the Diamond Authority at all, a tiny fraction of it made Pink Diamond's rebel force get fucked up. Steven also has to go to the Diamonds since there is no reason they would ever visit Earth besides crying about Pink Diamond

TBH, I probably should have realized how shit the writing was when Lapis Lazuli managed to somehow move all the Earth's oceans into a single giant column and then put it all back without causing a mass extinction and that also she can multitask well enough to create water clones to fight the Crystal Gems while doing this. She can also apparently move Steven rapidly into low earth orbit or the upper atmosphere without killing him from the kinetic energy of that or drowning him. It's very obvious in retrospect the writers didn't think this through since if she is that powerful with that level of fine control not to kill everything she shouldn't be able to lose a fight on a water heavy world unless she's being targeted with orbital bombardment she can't reach. Still naively had faith in the show for the first couple seasons. By the time she was actually on friendly terms with he Crystal Gems I was left wondering why they don't convince Lapis to do more. Moving that much water means she should have been able to fight The Cluster on her own. I remember at the time there even being some speculation that the purpose of Lapis Lazuli Gems was not just geoengineering with massive amounts of water, but also the ability to act a total ecosphere killer by rapidly stripping a water heavy planet of life that might cause issues for the Diamond Authority. At least her force fusing with Jasper instead of just crushing her with water could be explained as being insane from being trapped in isolation hell for millennia, but how the fuck could a Lapis Lazuli ever lose a ground fight?

We get no indication bubble Gems are conscious while Lapis seems to have been aware the entire time while in the mirror. This is like a human deciding it's better to lock someone in solitary confinement until they die instead of just killing them. Reminds me of that time the Crystal Gems were okay with leaving one of the Ruby squad floating forever in space when Gems are immortal, don't need to breath and don't need to drink or eat. Shattering would be a mercy compared to the hell of being isolated with no stimulation for millennia if not eternity.

The show also never explains how Lapis got to Homeworld and makes it seem like she flew there on her own... when there's an episode where Garnet mentions you can see Homeworld's galaxy from Earth. Apparently Lapis has personal FTL that lets her get to another galaxy in less than year and somehow didn't get lost looking for a tiny rock in the vastness of space she hasn't been to in thousands of years. All they needed was a single line saying she found a warp pad or abandoned ship with coordinates for Homeworld in the solar system somewhere to explain that, but no just apparently there's Gems that can casually FTL and navigate intergalactic distance unaided.
