Yeah, the magic system just kind of seems poorly thought out, but I'm pretty sure it was an afterthought to serve the story instead of building the story from the magic system. Same thing with Steven Universe's world building where there's no explanation at all where Gems came from even though they seem to be artificial constructs or even if what they're calling Gem magic is just Clarketech, but it's just background so the show can have singing lesbian space rocks.
According to Dana Terrace in a reddit AMA it wasn't even the gay stuff specifically that got the show canceled, but that the show wasn't drawing the right audience and not fitting the Disney brand.
If true the first show that comes to mind that got cancelled for the audience skewing older than the execs wanted would be something like Invader Zim where Nickelodeon didn't care that teens liked it, they just saw it wasn't as popular with the 2-11 demographic they wanted.
The gay stuff certainly contributed skewing the audience older if that is the case, but I don't know what Dana Terrace was expecting working with Disney since they mainly do animation for children with the adult animation being from when they bought out Fox. Worth remembering that for decades Disney released adult targeted films under Touchstone Pictures because they didn't want those films to be associated with the family friendly image of the Disney brand.

Also, yeah, the show just mostly abandons the magic school story it started with. Possible that may be a product of the story being rushed.
I lost interest about half to a third of the way through season two due the story getting off in the weeds and the introduction of the they/them fag with a name right out of tumblr.
Amphibia was a better show and the creator stated three seasons is what they planned from the start so it feels a lot less rushed and more focused.

Tales of Arcadia is great. Only bit of weird stuff is probably from Guillermo Del Toro due to his habit of sneaking his fetishes into his works, but the only thing I really noticed was
a male pregnancy involving Steve and Aja since apparently male Akiridions carry the kids like seahorses or something.
Only real criticism I have is the finale is a bit predictable due to
character deaths happening and access to time travel.
>Zoomers don't watch your shitty expensive faux animes.
Who knew the tiktok generation obsessed with short form content and background noise shows would be less interested in anything with a serialized plot? Netflix even admitted to dumbing down original content for the background noise audience.
