>Isn't that who caused this problem in the first place?
Well, Soyjak Party is where the hacker responsible "hangs his hat", posting about how he did it, etc.
As I understand the situation, 4chan was processing image and pdf uploads with a version of GhostScript that hadn't been updated in over a decade. Some people are saying that it's been even longer - that the code hasn't been updated since moot himself sold the site, and moved on.
Said hacker uploaded a "false" pdf to 4chan. That is, instead of it being a pdf, it was actually a list of PostScript commands that - when it hit the outdated version of GhostScript - gave the hacker moderator-level access. Which wouldn't have worked if 4chan had the recommended patches and updates.
With that access, the hacker then reinstated the old /qa board (from which Soyjak Party originated). He also proceeded to release the master list of mods, admins, and janitors to the Soyjak Party website, along with screenshots of the (formerly secret) /j/ board for the mods, all of 4chan's source code . . . Pretty much the crown jewels of 4chan's proprietary secrets.
(Theoretically that also includes the list of everyone with a trip code, but the hacker claims he didn't look at it.)
That's why 4chan is offline. The sys-admins have over a decade's worth of deferred maintenance that they have to do, well, now. The fact that the software was so wildly out-of-date is now widely known, so they have to worry about wannabes hitting 4chan with every exploit developed over the last decade.
