Your darks seems too dark, the lights too light and the midtones all over the place, Its too much contrast, making it unpleasant to look and the shapes are not well defined. Its not more complex you are just going beyond little bit over flat light and shadow, but without any structure or process, making it chaotic and random.

Just watch everything on this guy, marco bucci is awesome.
I suggest an exercise:
Use limited tones, only 5 or maybe even less and try to do studies or just try painting with that in mind (You can go increasing the number of tones but choose carefully as you go and really stop to think where you wanna put it).
Use round hard brush.
It will make you really conscious and intentional about brushstroke, shapes and whatever color u put on canvas. Its a fucking demonic exercise.

This one you went a lot more safer in putting any darker tones but the shadow and light family is clearly separated, which actually gave a lot mroe pleasant look. but it could have more contrast..
The problem is not that its flat, its just that u need to explore the midtones more. If you went darker on the shadows it would free up space for more midtones on light family and possibility to "model" the forms better even with only a hard brush.
(you could try to go even lighter on midtones for a more light piece, but it would be harder, a lot more constraint and limited options.)
I love round hard brush!
Wouldve loved to try to paint over it to try to show an example but cant rn and I think this is enough.
hope this helps.
Your drawings are fucking solid though, really good shit dude, keep it up.
