I don't like this ending. Call me soft, but they caught Garen alive and still decided to shoot him. While a sadistic bastard, he showed or rather the writers showed he's capable of reason and his reasoning for his shitty actions weren't ultimately evil in of themselves. It was a twisted form of care for people he valued as ones that would make them survive the best. So, he was more emotional than rational, but it's clear he wasn't entirely evil or just for the sake of it (except stealing the collapse pieces). It irks me the inspector didn't spare him. I would be incredibly satisfied if they put him in jail. Sure, the story is supposed to show a grim setting where killings are commonplace, but we even had a reference to Dmitry's event. It had killings and Dalia dying would've sufficed, as her role was important to lore, her overall presence was negligible and could've ended as soon as she passed the account book to Leo to fill the death quota. I would've preferred if he stayed alive at least until the farm had grown more and Leo's actions and rationale were vindicated. He admitted to not being strong enough, showed a modicum of sense, I would've much preferred knowing he would be forced to see the settlement grow and see with his own eyes how wrong he was.
In the best case scenario he would then change for the better. In the worst case he would throw a bitchfit and die all the same, but at least he would know Leo was the in the right. Leo kept the whistle, held a memorial, all with a stonecold face and only had remorse over being a bounty hunter. Why not let him be the better man and refuse these exact actions that bounty hunters commit? Firing squad on PoWs. That's just leaves a terrible taste in my mouth for a side event that was really great overall.
Sabrina had her personality and character shown, Qiuhua shined a lot in her event too, Elmo dolls made an appearance, and the plot wasn't relevant to the main story, but it was still memorable and even had a Chekhov's gun as an icing on the cake. And it all falls flat because the ending felt like tasting an insect in said cake. It doesn't ruin everyone's taste, especially if they enjoy the cake too much to notice or ate it in big chunks, but I savored it and then tasted that weird texture that ruined my entire experience, despite remembering the great taste.
TL;DR: I'm salty Leo's vision wasn't vindicated, by Garen not living and Leo literally throwing out goodwill to kill his CAPTURED old friend, making him no better than a spiteful cunt.
