>I don't get why people waste their time then, when there is so much more interesting stuff out there ?
It's called "Social Media" not a Library.
People want to Socialize more than to actually learn.
Entertainment is a bigger industry than Educational one.
The reasoning behind it is justified, too. You want to meet and oil up as many people as you can to have more opportunities in life.
Another aspect is, previously irl people (particularly teens) were not as toxic and malicious as they are now, I personally am basically forced to use Social Media to communicate with likeminded individuals because I can't find likeminded people near me irl regarding various hobbies/interests.
Before the internet, these kinds of social communities existed/socialization happened in bazaars and chai ki dokaan, although they still exist in some capacity today, the over-urbanization in the cities basically deincentivize going outside, the sound and air pollution, lack of greenery, lack of open fields and toxic zoomer culture all play a role here.
>In the competition for your attention , why do pathetic websites and pathetic people win ?
Define "Your"
Are you referring to people like us who like to learn, or your average 14yo inchtard ?
What I have personally found is, people want to spend the least amount of their mental energy to think, particularly about abstract topics.
Makes sense too, You want to get a job and get a wife, what good is abstract thinking ?
Unfortunately, Being able to Abstractly Think is the prerequisite of self-learning and having interest/curiosity.
Material wealth is necessary for survival, Abstract thinking not so much. Socialization is a Material wealth despite being abstract in nature (i.e. it has direct real-world value)
On top of that, our Soceity and Culture alnost criminalizes free thinking and freedon of thought, We are conditioned from a very young age to obey and not to think/ask questions, so is it really surprising that when a vast majority of our children are brutally beaten/socially ostracized for asking basic elementary questions as a child that when they grow up, their ability to think, their reasoning skills and their innate human curiosity are undeveloped and /or completely absent ?
Rreminds me of one of those feral human children who got abandoned since their early childhood and they never fully developed their cognitive abilities.
The Boomers are/were eternal manchildren, the Zoomers are overreacting by acting according to their definition of what they think is manly (Bollywood cinema hero)
