psyop is when a government or intelligence apparatus tries to manufacture an opinion or consensus by controlling the media, newspapers, radio shows, movies, etc. That was done during the Cold War. Governments were trying to sway the population to their causes.
So in modern times groups of individuals also run such
psyops on much smaller scale, in niche communities like Internet forums and imageboards. However, since the Internet is full of retarded topics, these psyops are termed
gayops because the topics are usually banal, and the strategies for swaying opinions are usually
gay (pejorative) and stupid.
For example, imagine you set up a poll to decide who's the best waifu, and a group of retards decide to create a ton of email addresses, reply to themselves, and vote multiple times, that would be running a gayop. So the difference between simple stupid posting, and a gayop is that a gayop is organized, normally on Discord by a bunch of retards.
